Fourth Floor Common Room, Thursday Afternoon

Adam was in the mood for something salty. Popcorn might do the trick. Or maybe pretzels. He frowned as he stared into the cabinet. Decisions, decisions.

Finally deciding on pretzels, Adam sat down on the couch and flipped through his notes. He realized that the first week of classes was almost over. Huh. Time sure flew by. He only hoped his senior year wouldn't pass him by too quickly. He wanted to enjoy it, after all.

"Oh, hello," she said to the boy on the couch as she walked in. "I always seem to end up on a floor that is not my own." Penelope smiled. "I was simply exploring. Am I interrupting?"

"Hey," Adam smiled at her. "Oh no, not at all," he shook his head. "What floor are you staying on?"

Penelope stepped in further and sat down primly in a chair close to the couch. "I'm staying on the third floor. I'm a new student. Are you?"

"Cool," Adam replied. "Oh, no. I've been here since last year. I'm a senior, now. I'm Adam Park," he added, offering out his hand to her.

Her eyes went wide. "You've been here a long time; tell me, is it as strange as everyone says?" She reached over, gingerly placing her hand in his. "Penelope Wilhern. It's a pleasure to meet you, Adam."

"I guess I have, yeah," Adam nodded, not really seeing it that way. Probably because of how fast it went by. "It really is," he admitted. "Usually, it's strange in a good way, but sometimes, it's freaky. There's been invasions and some of them weren't all fluffy and nice," Adam added, thinking of the dinosaurs and the weird furry aliens that weren't so nice when you added music into the mix. "Likewise, Penelope."

"I worry that something terrible might happen," she admitted softly. "But not so much that I wish to go home. This is the first time I've been away from home, so I suppose that could attribute to my worrisome thoughts as well." She smiled. "Do you like it here? May I ask where you come from?"

"That was my worry when I first got here," Adam nodded, knowing how she felt. "It will definitely get better, trust me. Plus, there might be some rough times, but we've all made it through. I know you will, too," he added. "I love it here. I've met some great people and the classes might be eccentric, but they've definitely taught me some valuable lessons."

He might sound a little corny but that didn't make it any less true. "I'm from Angel Grove, California. 1996 to be exact."

"Thank you, Adam. That is a very nice thing to say," she replied, her smile ready and easy. "I do have a wonderful roommate and have met several very nice people. My school appointed big brother doesn't seem to wear shirts, but I've been told that is a common occurance here."

She continued to smile. "I should love to visit this state, California. I've heard others mention they are from there also. The difference in years is still very much hard to grasp, but I'm not freaking out over it at all anymore."

"You're welcome," Adam replied, smiling somewhat shyly. It was no big deal, really. "That's good, I'm glad to hear that. Yeah, shirtless guys tend to be the norm around here." Except Adam had yet to become one of them. Maybe next year.

"It's a beautiful place, all though, I think I'm pretty biased," he laughed. "Yeah, it was a little daunting at first, but you get used to it. Trust me."

"It is very pretty here also, I think. England is beautiful, where I'm from. The parks are big and the most gorgeous of flowers grow there," she grinned a bit sheepishly, though she knew others could only see her eyes. "I have somewhat of a green thumb."

"Oh, I'd love to visit England," Adam admitted. "It sounds lovely. Oh, yeah? I'm not much of a gardener. That's more my mom's skill."

Mac raised a hand in greeting to Penelope as she sat. "Hi." She had no idea who she was, so figured it was safe to assume the girl was new.

Or, relatively so, anyway.

"Hello," Penelope smiled and raised her own hand in a slight wave. "I'm Penelope Wilhern."

"Mac," she said in return, and pointed towards the corridor. "In 416. You're new?"

"It's very nice to meet you, Mac. Yes, I'm new. Arrived just Saturday. Are you new as well?"

Mac grinned. It'd been a while since anyone had asked her that one. "Me? Nooo. It'll be three years I've been here in January."

"I guess I'm proof someone normal can actually make it through in this school," she said, a little smugly.

"Three years? You must have so many stories, don't you?" Penelope asked, surprised.

"You are not a magic person then, from a magic place?"

"Nope." Mac shook her head. "Normal girl, from normal California... Or, y'know, as normal as California gets in any dimension, anyway."

"After a few years here, you, yeah you definitely pick up some stories. Stay here a week, and you'll already have some."

"I sure have met quite a few people from California. It must be a very popular state," she considered thoughtfully.

"I have heard there is a unicorn here, but I've yet to see him. Have you?"

"I heard something on the radio," Mac said. "But no, haven't seen him... or her, whichever. Doesn't really surprise me all that much, though."

"I was sure they belonged only in fairytales," she replied.

"Are you a senior then?"

"Fairytales and Fandom," Mac confirmed with a little smile. "And yeah, I'm a senior now. Taken me long enough to get here."

Penelope smiled. "Who knew that I would be living in one when coming here? My parents certainly didn't. Don't. And they won't hear it from me or I suspect they'll snatch me back just as quick as they could."

She nodded. "I'm a junior. This is the first time I've been to school."

"Really?" Mac smiled, always a little intregued by things like that. "Homeschooled, or just from a dimension where school isn't compulsary?"

"Homeschooled," she replied, somewhat shyly. "My mother thought it best for me."

"I would've killed for that when I was little," Mac admitted with a little laugh. "But I think that was just because I had kids like Dick Casablancas in my class, sticking gum in my hair."

Penelope giggled. "That's very cruel." But then possibly better than having kids stare at you because you were a freak.

"Four days into the semester, and you're the first person I've seen voluntarily doing work outside of class," Mac told him as she sat down on another nearby chair with her laptop.

Look, she can even be sociable while she's antisocial. It's a whole skill set.

Adam laughed. "Yeah, well, I can't promise anything for the middle of the semester." He was joking. Really.

"Yeah, you always start off with all these good intentions... At least, I do," Mac said as she flipped open her computer. "And by the time a couple of weeks have passed, you've figured out that working non-stop, sucls."

"Oh yeah, especially when the teacher decides their class is the only one that matters," Adam shook his head. It had happened to him once or twice before. Thankfully, he could handle it.

"Yeah, seems to me that every teacher thinks their class is the only one worth bothering with," she said with a wry smirk. "It's practically a law of nature."

"I think I'd be a little freaked out if they decided their classes suddenly weren't," Adam half-joked. "It wouldn't be Fandom then."

Mac laughed. "True," she said. "I actually really don't know how I'm going to manage going back to normalcy at the end of this year after all this time here."

"Oh man, yeah," Adam agreed. "I don't want to think about that. It'll be a long while before I get used to the idea that gremlins won't randomly pop up and attempt to bite me."

"Okay, that? I really won't miss," Mac admitted. "Nor the tasting of gross stuff... Or turning into animals."

She paused. "I take that back. Might be a refreshing change of pace."

"I think I might miss the animal thing, but definitely not changing into little kids or turning into a different person at some point," Adam added. Yeah, no thank you.

"I liked the kid thing," Mac put in. "Other than having to wash the highlighter out of my hair the next day, it was kind of fun."

"Did you end up turning into one? Or did you stay the same?" Adam was curious. "I have to admit, seeing my girlfriend as a little one was pretty cute." And funny, too. But he didn't want Eve to kill him for making fun of her.

"I've always ended up as one," Mac said with a nod and a smirk. "Which, okay, is embarrassing, but in no way the worst thing to happen around here."

"I'm wondering if it'll happen again, before I leave and if I'll actually end up as one myself," Adam mused. It would be kind of cool to experience it, even if he'd turned into a kid before.

Just not while at Fandom. That? Hadn't been as much fun.
