The grounds around the dorms, Friday afternoon

Lola hadn't gotten around to checking with Tony about smoking in the room, yet, and decided it probably wouldn't be a good idea to try finding out by lighting up in there.

So she was chilling outside, taking her time working through a cigarette, and staring off into space.

What? Fun didn't always have to mean active, right?

Worf was returning to the dorm when he spied the young woman snoking. "You would be wise to not smoke," worf said gruffly. "It is bad for your health."

Lola wrinkled her nose and blew out a smoke ring. "For my body's health, maybe. But it can be good for my mind's health."

What was up with this guy's forehead?

"This time period has not eliminated all forms of cancer," Worf warned. "You mind's health wouldn't be worth much with a healthy body."

"You are saying that people with maybe no legs aren't worth as much as other people?"

Yeah, she knew what he was probably actually saying. Didn't mean she couldn't be kind of a smart ass about it.

"No. That is not what I am saying," Worf replied sharply. "And no word play will make your habit any healthier."

Lola laughed. "But it will make my habit funnier, ja?" She ashed carefully into an empty cup. She might be doing horrible things to her lungs, but dammit, she was protecting the grass. . . .

Worf bristled visibly. "If you think so," he replied. He never did understand human humor very well. "In the meantime you would do better to engage in exercise. It would be a healthier activity for you."

Robin thought he'd head out to the swamp to tell the locals that he was back.

But he got distracted by the opportunity to meet someone new. "Hi!" Robin waved to Lola.

Ah, yes, she'd heard about the frog. She wiggled a few fingers, looking bemused. "Guten Tag."

Ooh, Robin didn't know German, but he did recognize it. "Uh, that means hello?" he guessed.

Lola nodded. "Ja. Well, 'good day'."

Something on the wind tickled at his memories and had him hunting around the dorms until he saw a familiar red head.

"Ah. Good day, Lola."

Not quite the pereguenay scent he remembered from the Gale Forcer officers, but neither the half-hobbled herbs of the grunts. A strange mix of the two, to his nose.

Lola smiled. "Hallo, Liir." She gestured with the cigarette. "You smoke? I have more if you'd like one."

He shook his head.

"Never had the money for it. Some people I hung around with did. The smell was familiar.

"Thank you, though."

Lola shrugged. "Bitte. How are you?"

"Well enough. And you? Settling into things all right?" he asked, genuinely curious from his tone.

Lola nodded. "Ja. I think it is because I knew when I came that things would be different here than at home. Just not how much different."

"That's good then," he said, not sure what else to say, "I'm glad of that, then. Anything particularly interesting?"

Shikamaru wandered outside and simply sat down not too far away. He inhaled deeply: tobacco made him think of home.

Lola noticed him after a few moments. "Would you like one?"

He laughed softly, "No thanks. They cause cancer, you know."

He said it more out of habit than any real concern.

Lola gasped and put her hand to her mouth sarcastically. "Doch! It's good you told me!"

Despite himself, Shikamaru laughed. "I know. Completely shocking, right?"

Lola laughed as well. "They are keeping big secrets from us."
