Third Floor Common Room, Wednesday Night

It wasn't like Jess hadn't known that Anakin hated him. But he hadn't been aware of exactly how much he was hated until he'd spent a full day with Jar Jar Binks. They were only around Buffy for a few minutes before she and Jess both agreed that Jar Jar couldn't stay in their room, so they'd mostly been in town instead, with Jess spending most of his time trying to make sure Jar Jar bumped into as few things as possible. When evening rolled around, he decided they had no other option but to camp out in the common room again, and if anyone had a problem with that, Jess figured he could just make the person talk to Jar Jar for a few minutes, and they'd understand. Or, they'd at least flee for the sake of their sanity.

Out of desperation, Jess had turned on the television, and by some miracle, discovered that Jar Jar was absolutely fascinated by the Home Shopping Network's gem collection. Sure, it wasn't keeping him totally quiet, but he was occupied enough that Jess could think about making food without wondering what he could slip sleeping pills into.

Ella came into the common room to see if there was anything there that looked like food for a baby Ewok.

Unfortunately, her ransacking of the cabinets was complicated by the fact said Wokling was infinitely more interested in yanking on her hair. "Hi - ow, Furball, let go, that's mine! - Jess," she managed, as she pulled out a jar of applesauce.

Jess spotted the Wokling and gave Ella a jealous look, hair-pulling or not. "Hey. How's it going so far?" he asked.

"Well, he didn't stop me from cheerleading practice, but I'm glad he goes back to Harvey in the morning," Ella said honestly. She grabbed the Ewok's paws to stop the hairpulling. "How are things with your ... companion?"

"We haven't killed each other yet, but I don't want to say it could be worse because then I think it might get worse," Jess admitted. "You're lucky you have a partner. Very, very lucky."

"I know, and Harvey's been exceptionally nice as a father," Ella agreed with clear relief. "Do you think Anakin gave you the special assignment for a reason?"

"He hates me," Jess said simply. "Really, really hates me. I think if we die, and meet in our next lives, he'll still hate me."

"Oh, it can't be so bad. Did you know him before class?" Ella ventured. It was the only explanation she could think of.

She was also trying to figure out what Jess could have done.

"No, but I knew his wife. She's my ex-girlfriend," Jess explained. "It shouldn't be surprising to know that he's a little...possessive." That wasn't all of why he was mad, of course, but it was a start.

Ella blinked at that, though perhaps for the wrong reasons. "His wife must have married terribly young for this world," she ventured. "But yes, I see how that would be awkward."

"It's actually a different version of her that he married. One of those weird dimensional things." The kind that he still had trouble wrapping his brain around sometimes. "She's older than the Rory I know. Not that it makes it less awkward. That's a good word for it."
