There was only so long Tahiri could put off thinking about how her lightsaber skills were . . . not up to par, to be tactful about it. Not being one to think about these things without doing something about it, she decided to -- well, do something about it.

As she ignited her lightsaber with the familiar snap-hiss and worked her way through a few basic drills (these were so boring but she supposed she had to) she was grateful that she hadn't had to leave the building to do this. That would have required shoes.

"I don't remember the all that part of the lecture," he said, dancing out of the way of her blade.

"It was before your time," Tahiri informed him, feinting again.

Ben snickered. "Sure it was," he said, falling for her feint.

[weetuskenraider]

"It so was," insisted a grinning Tahiri. She reversed her stroke, trying to put a little more speed into it this time.

[momslilassassin]

"My father hasn't come up with a new speech in decades," Ben cheerfully slandered, parrying her movement.

Tahiri looked at him over the joined blades. "Still?" she exclaimed. And aimed a kick toward his knee.

"And half of them he cribbed from Obi-Wan and Yoda," Ben said, flipping over the top of Tahiri's head.

"Is that why he always sounds a little funny when he gives some of them, then?" Tahiri whirled and, at the same time, pushed with the Force again, hoping to throw him off balance.

Ben laughed and pushed back with the Force, just enough to show her he knew what she was trying to do. "He really thinks he's an old hermit," he said solemnly, meeting her blade with his.

"You little kreetle," Tahiri teased -- and reversed directions, spinning again to come at him with an uppercut slash.

"Not so little," Ben protested, barely getting his lightsaber up in time.

He was really, really rusty.

"Okay, no," Tahiri amended, and took advantage of the moment (yay for not being slower for once) to try and bat his lightsaber out of the way. "Definitely not so little."

Ben could've picked a worse time to preen, but it would have been hard.

"As long as you remember," he said, smirking.

She thought she spotted an opening to disarm him, and tried to do just that. "Somehow I don't think you're going to let me forget, now."

Ben kept hold of his lightsaber, but only barely. "I'm not a kid anymore."

[weetuskenraider]

Tahiri let up at that, and just looked at him. "I know," she said quietly, and it could just as well have been I'm sorry.

Ben's eyes met her for just a second as he tried to figure out if she was pitying him at all.

Tahiri shook her head and took a moment to try and put her reaction into words. "Everything we're doing back home right now, and you don't get a better world for it, not even two decades later. It's not fair."

Ben sighed and shut his lightsaber down. "I didn't expect it to be," he said softly.

[weetuskenraider]

"I guess I didn't either," Tahiri admitted as she deactivated her own. "I just -- can't the galaxy catch a break?"

"It hasn't for the last hundred years," Ben said bitterly. "I bet it wishes it never heard of Skywalkers."
