Ah. The couch. Very comfortable, very nice, especially after a long, hard day at the library and working oh-so-hard in Self-Defense Club. Cal reveled in the softness of the cushions and how easily his lanky body seemed to have no problem taking it over, and munching on delicious cookies that seemed to have been just waiting for him to consume.

The fact that Rumor Gal was on the TV was pure coincidence. Really. It was just on. Background noise. Somehow, 'someone' had lost the remote under the couch again. The fact that he appeared riveted to it was just more of his clear acting skills.

"Ohhhh," Cal nodded.

"You have robots?"

"Lots," Ben said. "I'm not a big sleeper."

"Dude, my brother would love you."

"Really?" Ben looked a little too excited about that. "Why?"

"He's always been into that sciency stuff. Ordering the stupidest stuff from the back of comic books that never worked. I can't rip on him too much, though, considering he came up with the genius idea that earned my dad his fortune in the hot dog business."

"What was it?" Ben asked, "or is it proprietary?"

"I wouldn't call it proprietary," Cal said, "so much as kind of ridiculous. Turns out he figured out this genius way of slicing them up so that they god really big when you cooked them. And my dad turned that into a successful franchise."

Sometimes Ben was very fourteen. The mental image he got of giant inflating hot dogs had him fighting back a very mature case of the giggles. "That sounds very inventive."

Okay, yeah, it was pretty funny, and Ben's giggles only inspired a few of Cal's own. "Yeah, I know," he said, rolling his eyes. "That's what my family fortune's built on. Making weenies bigger."

Probably a good thing Chapter Eleven was running it swiftly into the ground.

"I've gotten ads for that on my computer," Ben said, still laughing.

"No kidding? I still can't figure out a computer enough to get ads."

"Oh, computers on this world are easy," Ben said cheerfully. "Want me to help?"

Suddenly, what Claire had pointed out about whether Cal couldn't learn computers or if it was simply that he didn't want to went ringing through his head.

"Nah, I'm good," he said. "I'm just working my way to it. I'm from what's practically this world's Industrial Revolution of technology."

And thanks to Claire for that one, too.

"Huh," Ben said, smiling. "And we've had space flight master for so many millennia we can't imagine not doing it. There's very little that can be invented these days."

"My brother," Cal said, "brought home an Atari this Thanksgiving and it was the most mind-blowing technology almost everyone has seen."

"Atari?" Ben repeated, not recognizing the word. "What's that?"
