Self-Defense Club, The Gym, Monday afternoon

There were wee little gift boxes with shiny ribbons all over the gym today. "Please don't assume they're from me, since they were here when I showed up," said a puzzled-looking Hoshi. "But help yourselves. I got a really nice mechanical pencil in mine. Anyway, I thought this would be a good time to talk about being safe when it comes to dealing with cash with the holidays coming up. However, we don't use currency at home. My first time handling cash was in Fandom, so it's not exactly my area of expertise. If you guys have any tips or experiences to share, please don't hesitate to do so. I'm sure many of you know more about handling cash than I do."

She started passing out a handout. "I've got to admit that some of the tips that this author gives seem kind of weird to me, but it's a good starting point," said Hoshi. "If you're going gift shopping and you have lots of cash with you, don't advertise it. Even better, it might be safer to leave the cash at home and use one of these credit card things. If you lose cash, you won't see it again. It's also best to be aware of your surroundings and not carry too many packages with you. If you are paying with cash, make sure you count your change and don't flaunt any large bills. You don't want to attract attention. It's also a good idea to familiarize yourself with the local currency and know how to spot counterfeit bills."

At the end of her talk, Hoshi added, "The mats and punching bags are set up if you want to work on any kicks and punches, or if you want to demonstrate how to take out a purse snatcher."

Oh, man. Turtle just kind of grinned a little, waving a hand. "Trust me," she said, "you guys don't even want to get me started."

Amber shrugged. "I never have much cash on me, so it's really never an issue with me."

"You don't have to have a lot, just more than someone else who needs it," Tony said.

"Point," Amber nodded. "Think it matters that I don't carry a purse?"

"It helps," Tony said. "It's a lot easier to grab a purse than pick a pocket." He knew this from experience.

"In theory, you could walk around with all the cash you want if you also brought some bodyguards along with you," Dick said. "It's not really cost-effective, and I'd never do it, but it is one solution."

Naomi opted to listen to the discussion rather than contribute to it, since she was pretty much in the same situation as Hoshi when it came to dealing with currency during the holidays.

Summer definitely felt like she could contribute to this discussion. "It's totally better to have credit cards instead of cash when you are going to be doing some serious shopping."

As Dick stretched, he noticed a little gift. Upon opening it, he was disappointed. "I got a rock."

"...Doesn't that mean you've been bad this year?" Turtle couldn't help asking as she stretched a little herself.

"No, that's coal," Dick said. "This is just a rock. It's an important distinction."

"Just a rock? It's not, like, sparkly or pretty colors or anything?"

Murdock was having a ball with the wee presents. He'd picked up a couple and was gleefully opening them.

So far, he had scored a cute incredibly annoying little whistle, a pack of gum and a yo-yo.

"Whooo! I needed one of them!" he stated of the yo-yo, mostly to himself. "Lost my last one down in there in Hell."
