Fourth Floor Common Room - Sunday Afternoon

Emmett had spent most of the night exploring the dorms and enjoying being able to walk around without the smell of humans being too overpowering. He was thinking about going into town but decided to pace himself when it came to exploring. If he saw everything too fast then he got bored and when he got bored he tended to make houses out of cardboard and play "General Sherman is burnin' everything" in the yard with Jasper (well, Emmett played. Jasper glared). He had the feeling burning the dorms down by accident would be frowned upon. So around 5 am he staked out a place in the common room and started to watch TV.

Now there was football on! Emmett had his ass on the couch, a football in his hand and was watching the Dolphins playing the Ravens. Then the Eagles were playing the Vikings at 4:30. God, he loved Sundays. He was tossing the football quickly between his two hands but making sure it was at a human's pace just in case anyone came in.

There was a big fellow in the common room but, at the moment, he was the only one in there so he just looked that much bigger.

And this was coming from Ned, a tall boy in his own right.

For a moment, he just stared before he snapped out of it and shuffled in, careful to stay out of the large fellow's reach. Just in case.

There was a very very tall person in his common room. One that didn't have long hair or a bald cat. Teddy confused!

"Hello?"

"Hey, dude," Emmett said, giving Ned a little salute. Since he was inside, Emmett was actually wearing short sleeves for once but the sideways cap was still in place.

Pasty gangsta would be a correct term for Emmett.

"What up?" Emmett greeted with a nod of his head. "You here to watch the game?"

Because if he wasn't that was just too bad.

"I live down two floors but sometimes I come up here if I'm bored so I don't know if you've lived up here the entire time or if you're new," Ned said. "So, you're new to me either way."

"Oh, I'm new to everybody, dude. Except to the people I met yesterday," Emmett said. He waved the football as another little greeting because he didn't want to touch anybody. "I'm Emmett."

"Ned." And he pointed to himself just in case Emmett got confused. Or because Ned was sort of an idiot. "Nice to meet, Emmett. You look like you're settling in well. Or, at least, comfortably."

"I've moved around a lot," he said honestly. And now, a lie. "After a while, the nervous new kid thing gets boring."

"I can relate to that." Sort of. "No, actually I can't because this is only the third place I've ever lived. And I was nervous when I arrived here. I sort of still am."

"Can't you just be not nervous?" he asked.

"It's not as easy as you make it sound," Ned replied, shrugging. "I can say I don't want to be nervous but actually going through with the process of not being nervous is a little more difficult. Saying and acting are different things."

"No, I'm not a big football fan," Teddy said, looking over at the television. "You new here?"

Emmett could give some wise advice gathered from his advanced years about how nervousness was pointless and only held you back. Only, one, he wasn't supposed to tell anyone about his age. And, two, he wasn't Mr. Rogers or some shit. He didn't give advice to anybody.

"Is there anything here to be really nervous about?" he asked.

There was a second there where Emmett had to comprehend how someone who wasn't his pussy-ass brother didn't like football. Maybe he was a hockey guy. Yes. That was it.

"Uh, yeah, brand spankin' new," he said. "Emmett Cullen."

"Well, for one, the threat of turning female is ever present," Ned replied. "So, yeah."

"Dude, it'd be so awesome to have boobs," Emmett said immediately. It took a second to comprehend what Ned said fully. "Wait. What? You turn into a chick?"

He didn't have the fabulous hair.

"Teddy Altman, nice to meet you," He said, offering a hand. "I assume everyone told you the horror stories of the place already."

"Uh huh." Ned nodded and went to get himself to drink. "I went to bed male and I woke up female. For a day. I had all the parts."

Emmett hesitated on the handshake for a split-second before deciding that if asked any questions, he could just say that he had just been outside. So he gave Teddy a light handshake. Didn't want to break fingers or anything.

"Some. Stuff about guys turning into chicks and gremlins," he said. "And I met the dude in red pj's."

Teddy made a face at the red pajamas. "Yeah, you get used to the weird stuff after a while here." A beat. "I've been a girl twice now, I've been here so long."

"Why did you turn into a chick?" he asked. "Piss off a witch?"

Emmett's logic was not our Earth logic.

"Shit like that just happens for no reason?" he asked. He chewed on his bottom lip for a second in thought. "Has anybody checked to see if this place was built on Indian burial ground?"

"Uh." Had he? No, no, he hadn't. He'd done a lot of things but not that. "No, this island is just an odd place. I don't know why it happened but it happened to me and several other guys. And the girls too."

"It's a dimensional nexus," Teddy replied. And yes, he sounded as though he was just repeating what someone else said. "So, like, people here probably aren't from your world."

"Huh. Well, I suppose if it only lasts for a day or so then I could handle it," Emmett decided. "At least you know how the other half lives now, right?"
