Third floor common room, Saturday around noon

Malcolm had spent the morning wandering around, boggling. Harken had never looked like this before! They must have remodeled the whole dorm! Of course, that meant he kept getting lost -- Malcolm wasn't that great at finding his way around on a good day. But there were all these new people around! It was his duty as a long-standing Harken student to meet them, right?

He just wished he could find Jake or Zoe or even Mr. Felcher. They'd know what was going on. . . .

He finally settled into one of the large common rooms and sat perched on the couch. Maybe someone would come by who could tell him what was going on.

[ooc: open! I have to run to work in a few hours and am greedy and want to get some play in. *grumbles at stupid work scheduling me all weekend*]

Wow, this guy was even more confused than Malcolm was!

That . . . was hard to do.

"Nice to meet you, Mr. Hanniger. Maybe you're the janitor?"

Oh hey! That rhymed! He couldn't wait to tell Mr. Rhodes.

Tom shook his head. "My Dad always said I made messes that he had to clean up." Not that a janitor would be able to clean up the kind of messes Tom had made, but still.

"Sooooo you are the janitor?"

Malcolm was confused. It was his natural state of being, really.

"Hey, you look like me!"

"Well, you look like me years ago," Tom clarified. "If you don't count the hair."

"What's wrong with my hair?" Malcolm carefully checked. It was long and floppy, just like it was supposed to be. That was very 'in'. He knew because he saw the teeny-bopper magazines some of the girls bought when they went to town. "Hey, maybe you're my long lost brother! Like in a soap opera!"

"I really don't think so," Tom said tightly.

"But you look like me," Malcolm pointed out, tilting his head and looking closer. "You look a lot like me. Way more than Mother and Father do. Of course, with Mother's plastic surgery, that's not hard to do."

"My Dad didn't have any other kids," Tom told him.

"Did your mom?" Malcolm knew how siblings worked -- well, he thought he probably knew, anyway. It wasn't just dads, at any rate. "Maybe you just didn't know? That's how it'd we'd be secret long lost brothers."

"My mom died when I was young. And Dad wasn't the type. Really. If you'd known him, you wouldn't even ask."

Malcolm gasped. "Maybe he wasn't your real father!"

He was on a roll. And enjoying this far too much.

"He was my real father. Seriously, life isn't like a soap opera." No, it was more like a horror movie.

"Oh. Okay!" Malcolm accepted this blithely, then sat up straight again. "Then why do you look like me?"

"Oh." Malcolm was a little disappointed. He rather thought life should be like a soap opera.
