The Salle, Monday Morning

He'd returned from the cruise safe and sound. While that had given Arthur a great deal to think about, it also meant that he was, in part, grateful to return to whatever semblance of a routine he'd managed to set up. And since he now no longer needed to carry bandages nor slings, life would be far easier.

He felt far less useless. Good.

He arrived in the salle early, never too fond of dawdling, and chose some practice swords for the day.

We're just one brunette short of Arthur's Angels.

*hands out survival gear and bunker keys*

If you want to use the salle without having to deal with the Princely temper.

One for all, all for coffee.

Dinah got there early, and started stretching immediately. "Hey, Arthur."

No thinking about what she had to tell him later. Nope. Practice. It might be the last one, after all.

"Dinah," Arthur greeted. He gave only a passing thought to the unreality of having these people call him by name. Progress? Perhaps. "Someone will be joining us today."

"Oh? Who?" Dinah quit stretching, and put her practice gloves on, wrapping them around her wrist before crouching down to get out her sticks. "One of the Jedi students?"

"I think their skills might be a bit beyond yours," Arthur said, graciously. "Put those down." He offered her one of the practice swords instead. "It's Lady Alice. I'd ask you to be on your best behaviour, but..."

"Well, yeah, but Tahiri still sparred with me. It was fun," Dinah protested. She put the sticks back in their bag, and bounced up to take the sword, sticking out her tongue at him. "And hey! I am always on my best behavior." Just not around him, sometimes. "I like Alice. She's different. She wants to learn sword-fighting?"

"No, I've got these swords out as a means to teach her how to knit," Arthur said, dryly. He measured the weight of the other one. "As for your behaviour, you're in real danger of making me laugh."

"I'm not rude," Dinah said, carefully handling her sword with both hands. "And for all I know you want to teach her staff-fighting or sticks or who knows what, Mr. I-know-all-weapons."

And forget a small twinge at the thought that now he had a second student, he wouldn't miss the first much.

"If I did, there would have been staves, Dinah."

Duh.

He considered the training blade one more time. Solid enough.

"I'll no doubt be putting the two of you up against each other soon enough; that means we'll be working on your defense today."

Dinah rolled her eyes, but didn't say she hadn't been paying that much attention-- she could probably give that lecture for him. Instead, she started the first set of practice forms.

"Oooo. Okay. Does she have any experience at all?"

"She says she's had to see combat with another kind of blade," he said. Vorpal blade. Like a butcher's knife, except more brutal.

The idea did appeal to him on some level.

"So we'll have to run through the basics. Now, Dinah- the first rule of proper combat with a sword is that you get in quick and get out faster. Don't dawdle when you land your blow."

Do you like your women like you like your coffee?

So, Alice might be better, but might make some beginner mistakes, not being as familiar with a sword. "Got it. Slash and leave. Cut and dodge," she said, suiting the action to her words.

"And remember," Arthur said, with a kind note, "The sword isn't like the staff. One good blow can end your opponent's life."

From what he'd experienced training with Morgana, it tended to be a problem for women to think in those terms - to go for the kill - and he wondered if it was any trouble to Jaina.

Dinah paused, caught by that. Somehow, she hadn't been thinking in those terms.

She continued the drill, a little slower and more carefully, unaware of the frown that had settled in on her face.

He caught the frown. That, then, was why he'd never face Dinah in real combat.

"On the other hand," Arthur continued, his eyes set firmly on her movements, "your job for now will involve making sure no one gets a good blow on you."

Another pass, and another, and Dinah nodded, not looking at him, brow smoothing out. It wasn't a game, but it was a challenge. And someday she might need it for killing monsters on the island, if dinosaurs or something worse came back.

"Fast, and back. In, and outta there." Upward, downward, across.

Leto couldn't help being curious about how Arthur teaching Alice would go, which meant he had decided to be here. He had picked up a staff and practised some sequences with it, but without much concentration, as that wasn't really why he was here.

You really need to recruit another brunette. ;)
