The Range - Girls With Guns [Tuesday afternoon]

It was good to be back at school where she could have a club meeting. Because a club meeting meant an excuse to shoot things, and shooting things was relaxing.

She also needed to talk to Mr. Algren. There were final details to be worked out for the laser tag trip. Which probably explained both the subtle (somewhat uncharacteristic) smile playing around the corners of Triela's lips and her oddly distracted air.

Or there could be some other explanation. It was Fandom, after all.

Algren was there, wearing an odd amalgam of clothing consisting of a tight Armani sweater and his 'vintage' 1876 slightly abused brown duster coat, with the handle of a hammer sticking out of one pocket.

He was also slightly disgruntled and muttering something about Tony Stark, the color 'chartreuse', and bees.

... He really needed to get himself a gun.

Jack was available to talk. Or to gawk at you, if you were breaking out the big guns.

Firearms, people, firearms.

Jack was taking great care to line up his shots and aim for the bullseye. He was getting better. They were all in the ring.

Arthur had heard word of the gun club. Visiting it would only fit snuggly in his plan to become more acquainted with the time (if with reasonable distance) and, honestly, he could use some sheer, simple violence right now.

He showed up to watch, his arms crossed, his head tilted thoughtfully.

"You would be the advisor, then," Arthur observed. He was the most adult-looking man on the premises.

Arthur had many questions.

Algren raised an eyebrow at the boy, and then he nodded, taking a moment to push any and all thoughts of bees WTF BEES out of his mind so that he could focus on the conversation at hand.

"That would be me, yes. And can I help you?"

If whatever this was about involved bees, he was leaving. In a rowboat. To anywhere but here.

"I am Prince Arthur of Camelot," he said, figuring that formal introductions never went amiss. "I seem to be a bit behind on this whole gun... thing."

Watch Arthur. Watch Arthur be tactful. Watch Arthur be slightly annoyed at admitting that he didn't know something to a perfect stranger.

"I've had the mechanism described to me, but that only tells me so much."

The introduction had Algren raising his other eyebrow momentarily. Only momentarily, however. He was slowly getting used to the... variety of students that Fandom seemed to present.

"I'm Captain Nathan Algren," he responded, "one of the American History teachers at the school."

Somehow, that felt like the appropriate response to such a formal sort of introduction.

"You'd like to know more than simply how the weapon works, then? I have to admit, my experience rests with older models, for the most part. I know any rifle or pistol from about a hundred and thirty years ago inside and out. It isn't that I can't shoot the newer ones, of course, but if you're asking me to disassemble something from this century, it might end up a learning experience for the both of us."

"Any century will do." Arthur's voice was a bit dry on that point. "I'll work my way up."

There was a whole library full of books that he needed to get into. He'd been spending too much time worrying, and too little time learning. (Of course, it didn't occur to Arthur that this was worrying in its own right, but he was a man of, er, particular perception)

"Which would be your preferred weapon, then?"

Range, speed, accuracy, please.

"That's a bit of a loaded question," Algren replied, pun not entirely intended. "If you're looking at doing anything over a decent sort of distance, a rifle would probably be for the best. They give you the opportunity to stay put and take time to actually aim. They're a bit more cumbersome than pistols, however. I wouldn't recommend them for much beyond the men on the front lines, bringing the numbers down if enemy forces are advancing."

...

"Or hunting. Any situation where you have the opportunity to hide yourself long enough to take clear aim, even while your opponent is moving. For anything more involved than that, I'd suggest a pistol. You can fire it with one hand, instead of two, it's smaller and easier to handle, keeping in mind that you only have so many shots with either. Once you run out, you'll need something else to fall back on, such as a sword."

Another pause.

"This is assuming that you're interested in learning about these weapons for the sake of battle, of course." Sometimes, his inner military man took the reigns a little too easily.

God help him, Arthur actually grinned.

They were alien concepts, but it was the sort of talk that he recognised instantly. The familiar was always good to settle frazzled nerves.

"Why else would you get one?" he asked, "It's the purpose of such things."

He digested the information given with care- made a note to look into these rifles even further. "How much ammunition can a rifle carry?" he asked. Working with the crossbow had always meant relying on a steady supply of bolts.

"Again, that depends on the rifle," Algren explained, thankful that Arthur seemed th be satisfied with his answer. He hadn't had an opportunity to talk military tactics except vaguely to his beleaguered History class since he found himself en route to Japan. "I hear that modern ones can fire off a few more shots, somewhere in the range of twenty. From there, there's supposedly an extender of some sort, that will allow a man to fire up to thirty-five."

He gave a bit of a grin of his own.

"The ones I'm most familiar with could fire seven. And then you had to reload. If you're in battle and you have to reload, you'd be better off tossing it aside and taking up something else before you wind up killed."

[If I'm a little slow between pings now, it's because I'm going to have to exercise my Google-fu for this conversation. :) Yay, learning!]

Re: Advisor

[personal profile] bitchprince 2009-03-03 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
"Thirty-five," Arthur repeated, thoughtfully. "That does sound quite useful. As you said, until you'd have to reload." At which point it would be a bother, especially considering the amount of... shots.

"How's the speed?" he asked, "Between... shots."
