Cheerleading [3/11]

Joan was more than a little freaked out by the scary things attacking from the sky when she got to the gym and started setting up for cheer practice.

Days like these she kind of wished she had some supernatural ability. Of course, she had faith that God wouldn't let anything happen to her. Otherwise he wouldn't be able to harass her.

At any rate, there was cheesy 80s pop music blaring through the speakers and mats out so no one would get hurt.

For the oglers

Jess wasn't normally one to ogle cheerleaders, but with the birds outside, his usual method of killing an afternoon by sitting out by the Perk wasn't exactly an option. Watching the girls that he knew - and he was surprised by how many of them he did know - be cheerleader-y seemed like a worthwhile substitute.

Joan waved when she spotted Jess in the stands.

Jess smiled and greeted Joan with a nod of his head. "You know, you didn't strike me as the cheerleader type the first time we met."

"I'm not," Joan said. "It's a long story. But... it's kind of fun."

"I wasn't expecting to see so many guys either. At least, I figured they'd all be on this side of the gym."

Joan laughed. "We managed to sway a few into joining us."

Jess smirked. "Gosh, I can't imagine what might have drawn them in," he said with a healthy touch of sarcasm.

"Think we can convince you to try out next time?"

"Barring any kind of school-record tragedy, I'm going to be graduating this year." That idea didn't seem any more real when he said it out loud. "So, I'll have to decline."

"Aw, too bad," Joan teased. "You'd look great in one of those skirts."

"I'm not taking that as a compliment, for the record," Jess teased. "Oh, hey, I almost forgot, I meant to find you after Valentine's Day. One of the flower orders you sent got screwed up, and I got it instead."

Joan frowned. "I double checked everything three times."

Then she remembered that He had sent flowers on her behalf and tried not to groan.

"It's okay," Jess said quickly. "It's not your fault. I just wanted you to know that they didn't get where they were supposed to go."

"Actually, I, uh... did send you flowers," Joan said, looking sheepish.

Despite how often he acted like a jerk, Jess didn't usually feel like one, but this moment was a surprising exception. "You did? I mean, thanks," he said. "They were nice. I just wasn't expecting them."

Joan shrugged. "It wasn't a big deal. I sent flowers to a lot of people."

She realized the moment the words were out that she sounded like an idiot for saying that.

"It was still nice to be included. I didn't think I'd be on anyone's list," he said, hoping that didn't sound as pathetic to Joan as it did to him.

When Brooke tired of looking for open harpy-sized spaces in the roof, she wandered over. "I'm thinking of taking up residence in the gym. You up for it?"

"Does that mean not having to go outside for a while? Because I could definitely be talked into that," Jess said. "I'm not really interested in getting clawed to death."

"It means not having to go outside like, ever. Or until one of the hero types makes them all go away. Whichever comes first," she decided. "I'm not picky."

"You mean you're not going to be out there on the front lines defending our territory?" Jess teased. "I knew you had good sense."

"Did you see what they're throwing?" Brooke asked. "Me and my good sense are staying indoors with the hot guys who come to watch the cheerleaders."

"This is definitely beating out anything else I could have done this afternoon, smelly flying birds or not," Jess said.

"You're welcome," Brooke said, because it was obviously her doing.
