The Salle, Monday Morning

On Friday, Arthur had reached a decision. After the weekend, he wasn't in the best mood to follow through on it, but there were few reasons to let his mood interfere with what was, essentially, a duty of some kind.

The duty of survival. As Crown Prince, it was a real one.

Still, he thought, as he arrived in the salle, Dinah had best be grateful. And it was all tactics. His gut still twinged with the sting of clear betrayal, but his sense of morality was as confused on this subject as anything else ever was, and so he ignored it.

Reno smirked, picturing the mental image she must have had right about then.

"Blizzaga's less funny when you're on the receivin' end of a small iceberg fallin' from the sky," he noted, and then waved her a little closer and started to undo the strap that connected his baton to his wrist. "Materia are," and his baton was now free, so he was going to hold it up to show off the two colored orbs which were pressed into two small round slots in the handle, "these things here. They're kinda like... crystallized memories, or lifestream, or somethin' like that. Never made much sense to me. But different ones'll let people cast different spells, if you equip 'em to a weapon or piece of armor, yo."

Dinah reached over to touch it, fascinated by the colors as if she were still five. The sense behind it was equally fascinating too, though. "So it's a magic weapon? You don't need to be a magician to use it, 'cause it's kind of-- pre-loaded?"

"Pretty much," Reno agreed, pointing to the sphere that was a slightly darker shade of green. "That one there, that casts Thundaga. That spell I was usin' on the roof. Every time you use it, it takes a bit out of you, but you can sleep that off anyhow and be good as new. A person can't cast nothin' where I'm from without this stuff."

Dinah nodded thoughtfully, somewhat covetous, and gave the baton a pat. "Are they real common back where you're from? How'd you get one? And how long do those little Materia last?" She heard herself, then grinned apologetically. "Sorry. I love new shiny weapons."

Reno allowed himself a chuckle and went about strapping his baton to his wrist.

"At the moment, it's pretty much gone black market. I got most of my Materia back when it was just the way to do things. Still the only way to take down most monsters, as far as I'm concerned. But people got scared that it was hurtin' the planet when some other nasty junk went down, so it's kinda tricky to find it now, unless you're stealin' it off monsters to start with. The natural stuff ain't as easy to find. It used to all be manufactured. But it'll last for freakin' ever, so long as I can tell."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:29 pm (UTC)(link)
"Good weapon, then." Not one she could get, either, but really, it sounded like that wasn't a good idea any more. "Coooool. I wouldn't mind knowing some magic, but I have so many other things I have to learn, you know? More fighting, and the swords and guns, and I have to work more with my throwing and boomerangs. Something like that would be cool to have, though. But I guess I should be glad I'm not from one of the worlds where I need it."
raspberryturk: (And?)

[personal profile] raspberryturk 2009-03-16 06:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"I miss it," Reno confessed, his baton settling to rest on his shoulder. "But then, I'm freakin' nuts, yo."

Monsters and clones and crazy alien beings. Yeah. You'd have to be crazy to miss a place like that.

"And now I'm wonderin' if the weapons you use can be equipped with Materia slots. Probably wouldn't be able to get you somethin' like Thundaga. I pushed my luck there gettin' someone else set up with that kinda stuff, yo. But stuff like Cure, that should be easy, zoto."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
"Cure?" Dinah looked hopeful. "You have human fix-it ammo? That would be awesome." Barbara could get her a dozen other cool toys (even if she wasn't allowed to play with them all yet) but a cure thing? That would make it so she could heal as fast as Helena? Awesome.

"That's totally what Cure is," Reno agreed. "And, I mean, we got potions for that kinda thing too. Those are still real easy to grab, but once a potion is used it's gone forever. No good if I leave after graduation and can't send back stock, yo."

He tilted his head, considering.

"I never made slots in a weapon on my own, wouldn't even know where to start and it might be hard to figure out how. But if I can get my hands on a Cure Materia, would you be interested? It's just a shiny green ball if you can't get it equipped into somethin', but hey. Then you at least got somethin' to play catch with."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
"Sure!" Dinah laughed. "I'd never want to waste the chance, even if I can't use it myself. My big sister is a tech genius. Maybe she could figure something out, if I gave her a shiny green ball to play with." She bounced on her toes, gleeful.

Rikku was so lucky. She'd never say that. But. Yeah.

"Well, I'll see what I can do, then," Reno decided, and he was already making plans on calling up Rude to make the arrangements. "It'll probably take a couple of weeks for my buddy back home to get his hands on it, but I'll let you know the moment it's on the way, yo. Bein' able to heal on the run is a huge help."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 06:59 pm (UTC)(link)
"Awesome. Thanks, Reno!" Dinah beamed at him, even more lively than when she'd walked into the salle. "I owe you. For last week, and this, for trying. I mean, if you need anything--" She paused, then admitted, "Well, I can't think of anything. But I do. So keep it in mind."

[personal profile] raspberryturk 2009-03-16 07:02 pm (UTC)(link)
"I'll let you know if I think of somethin'," Reno noted, shooting off a little half-assed salute. "For the Materia. Whatever happened last week comes free of charge, zoto. Maybe just try an' return the favor by helpin' someone else if you see 'em flounderin' like that in the future, and we'll call it square."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 07:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Which made it better, and Dinah's smile widened. She twirled her eskrima, then saluted him back. "Yeah, let me know on what you'll need. And definitely. Poor noobs. Wherever they are."

"There'll be plenty in the summer, after I graduate and leave," Reno noted. "Do me a favor and keep an eye out for 'em? I'd do it, but not bein' here and all makes that kinda tricky."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 07:28 pm (UTC)(link)
"Of course! It's what you do, right?" Barbara's voice, saying take in and mentor those like us. "It's just part of the job." She grinned at him, straightening a little. "Don't worry. I won't let you down on that."

"Atta girl," Reno chuckled, giving her a nod and a grin. "I'm gonna go swing my metal stick around some more now. Try an' work off some of that cake I inhaled when I was six. You take care of yourself, yoto."

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-03-16 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
"Back at you!" Dinah grinned, and spun her sticks again, feeling better about last week. And a little better about the future, too. Helping other people was always easier.
