3rd Floor Common Room: Sunday Night [3-22-09]

Peyton made popcorn and hot chocolate - comfort food for her tonight, thanks - and curled up on the couch to watch that movie about the woman who goes on holiday when she find out she only has a few weeks to live.

It was sappy and funny and made her feel good. All very nice things.

Prince Oscar Pedro was feeling bored and restricted in the room, so Chad agreed to let him prance down (and he was definitely prancing) to the common room. He gave Peyton a wave before following the prancing prince to the fridge. "Hey Peyton."

"Chad," Peyton said with a smile. "How's it going?" She looked at the cat curiously, but didn't say anything.

"Not bad," Chad shrugged, then gestured toward Prince Oscar Pedro, who was now prancing around in a circle. "Neko-kun got bored in the room. How've you been?"

"That's your... cat?" Peyton asked. "I don't think I've met him before."

She hesitated for a moment. "I'm good. A little worried about Meg and stuff, you know?"

Chad almost look startled at that statement.

Well, both statement.

"How have you not met Prince Oscar Pedro?" he wondered, which seemed more significant since he wasn't sure he knew Meg. "And what's wrong with Meg?"

"I don't know," she admitted. "I guess I just haven't. And Meg, well... her secret service agents showed up the other day and whisked her away. I think something might have happened to her mother, but I haven't heard anything."

"I hope she's okay," Chad said, and he meant it, even if he was pretty sure that he might not know who Meg was. That sounded pretty bad, though.

"And, just in case, Peyton, this is my cat, Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-kun."

Pause.

"The Third. Neko-kun, this is Peyton."

Prince Oscar Pedro meowed, blinking his large eyes up at Chad.

"Nope. Just Peyton. Well, Peyton Saywer."

"Uh, Peyton's fine," she said looking from Chad to the cat and back again. "Nice to meet you, Prince Oscar Pedro Neko-Kun the third."

There was another meow from the cat.

"He says just Prince Oscar Pedro's fine."

"Oh good," Peyton said with a smile. "I'm not sure I could remember the whole thing."

At least it wasn't as bad as Camille's name. Chad had thought of most of it and still wasn't sure he was getting it right. "It's long," Chad agreed, as he opened the fridge to look for food, "but it fits him, I think."

"It does seem to," Peyton said, watching the regal cat. "So, how have you been?"

"Good," Chad said. "I got a few letters from some of the colleges I applied for."

Which he hadn't opened yet, but still. They were there.

"Really?" Peyton said curiously. "You get accepted at them?"

She hadn't sent in any applications. College just... didn't seem like her next step.

There was a pause. All Chad could really hear was the buzzing of the refrigerator, even with the movie playing.

"I haven't opened them yet," he admitted, pulling out a carton of milk. "I don't know."

"You haven't...? Why not?" Peyton asked.

There was another pause, then Chad went to go get a dish from a cupboard.

"Nervous."

Peyton could get that. God knows she was nervous enough herself about... stuff. "Do you - I mean, I could open them for you if you want?"

Chad shook his head a little. "No, but thanks. I think...if I bring them to Teddy, he'll make me open them, so..."

She nodded. "It's scary, huh?"

"Yeah," Chad grunted. "Which....I don't even know what I'm going to study. It's weird that I should be nervous about getting in."

Peyton laughed. "Hey, still better than me. I didn't even apply."

"You know what you're going to do after graduation?"

She shrugged. "Not really. Maybe go out to L.A., see if I can get in on the ground floor in the record industry."

"I can support that plan," Chad said with a nod, and a subsequent thumbs up, before setting the dish he'd gotten on the floor and filling it with milk for the cat. "Doing what?"

"Eventually?" Peyton said. "I'd like to have my own record label, sign my own artists. Maybe in a million years, but, hey."

"I'd offer to start a band you could book," said Chad, "but I'll probably be in space."

Peyton laughed. "That might be a problem," she agreed.

"Yeah," Chad agreed. "A little."

"I appreciate the sentiment, though," she assured him. "And should you ever start a band here on Earth be sure to look me up."

"Absolutely. Good luck either way."

"Thanks. It's kind of a crazy dream, but it's mine."

"It's a good one," Chad said. "Reasonable. And, I mean, it's important to have those people in the music industry, so it's good to have some people wanting to do it."

"My mom..." she hesitated. "My biological mom. She's in the industry. At least somewhat."

"Really?" Chad asked.

And then caught up with the somewhat in that statement and had the decency not to ask what he was thinking.

He wouldn't have been far wrong. At least not for the first part of her involvement.

Peyton nodded. "Yeah. Or so she says."

"That's....kind of awesome."

"Yeah." Peyton wasn't so sure about that.

But it did make her think again that she needed to go see Ellie.
