Just Outside the Main Gate, Friday Morning

He'd been assessing people resources for most of the previous day. Since there had yet to be word from Lady Zoe, Arthur took the opportunity today to scope out how much space there would be for a barricade - if one could even be feasible.

This brought him to the area just outside the gates, wearing full armor and backed by Merlin-the-idiot-sorcerer, his eyes shooting towards the road in front of them from time to time.

Ah, rocks. Ben's old friends. "Want them up on the wall for throwing?" he asked, "or near the gates to block the entrance if necessary?"

"Near the gates," he instructed, "I think we've got enough long range fighters to forego rock-throwing for the time being." Next, he'd have to find something like straw, in case they had to light the bastards on fire.

Ben nodded. "I can be both," he said as he started moving the rocks. "Lightsaber combat tends to be up close and personal, but I'm trained with a rifle as well."

He had been in enough battles to recognize authority when it was standing there.

"Good," he said, "If the zombies get too close to the dorms, we'll need you up on high ground." Good god, Arthur was so out of his time and place, he could only hope it'd be enough. Showing any sign of that could kill as badly if not worse, and so he didn't.

"There's plenty of it," Ben said. "I can be on the roof of the dorms and still hit them."

Ben was good.

Arthur wasn't sure if that was a boast or not. "That won't be necessary," he said, "Besides, if the zombies do breach our defenses, you'll be close enough to reach the battle quickly."

Ben nodded again. "Wherever I'm needed," he said. "I just got back from a series of battles at home, so I'm still," twitchy, "thinking like a soldier."

"We need soldiers right now," he said. Ben was a squire. It wasn't that unusual, but he got a slight inclination of Arthur's head regardless. "Put that mind to work." It wasn't actually intended as an insult this time.

"From what I've pulled together from instructional videos, they seem to be vulnerable to fire and having their heads removed. Everything else just slows them down, but doesn't stop them completely," Ben rattled off. "They're also slow and not very bright, so they make up for that with numbers. I think most of the arsenal, regardless of time period, should work against them."

He nodded. "I've heard the same," he said, barring the fire part, but he had had that on mind to start with. "We've also got the North Gate to contend with."

"Don't suppose there's a way to get the townfolk in here, shut that thing down tightly, then just torch everything that moves on the other side?" Ben replied.

"I'm sure we've got wizards on the island willing to give it a shot," he said, dryly. It was his way of coping. "We'd have to use radio to round up the townspeople."

"And get them an escort," Ben added, "as it won't do to have them all get eaten on their way here."

"Yes, but we can't spread our troops too thin if the zombies start advancing," Arthur pointed out, "We'll call them here as early as we can, but we'll need a good pick of escorts."

"Maybe the law enforcement in town can take care of it?" Ben suggested. "That solves the problem of any teachers who might feel stupid if kids have to come rescue them."

Arthur wasn't a child in the slightest. "Several of us aren't children," he said, "But it won't hurt to get the knights involved in this."

Ben gave him a tight little smile. "I bet Captain Hammer would stay put if one of his students came to get him, just to be stubborn."

"Captain Hammer's an idiot," Arthur replied. He was such a mild man, really. "Let's not let that get in the way of saving his life."

"If I only saved people I liked, I'd have a lot more spare time," Ben commented.

And that? Would have been Arthur physically swallowing back a laugh. "Carry on," he said, once he'd managed. "There's much left to do."
