Rec room [Friday evening]

Nothing says "Anakin Skywalker" quite like "craft project."

Well, since the craft project was making flamethrowers.

With Zoe's permission, Anakin had assembled all of the supplies necessary for students to make their own weapons---PVC pipe, Supersoakers, backpacks, various forms of lighter fluid (and yes, there was also glitter and things to make the weapons pretty. Anakin was married to Rory, after all)--and had laid it all out in the first floor rec room.

He was hoping giving the students something constructive to do would keep them inside and away from getting eaten.

...there was also pizza. Anakin remembered that part of being a student, too.

Aren't arts and crafts projects awesome?

It was a very determined K-Mart that sat in the middle of a pile of supplies.

She was incredibly tempted to just make a flamethrower and then keep on making them, partly to keep busy and partly because hey, everybody needed weapons.

Savannah came in and sat down next to K-Mart, reaching for materials. Her eyes were red-rimmed and her hands shook as she worked.

"Hey," K-Mart said softly. "How's your mom holding up?"

Because asking how Savannah herself was holding up would be pretty stupid and even kind of insulting, not to mention it was written on Savannah's face.

"She's... she's focused on finding a solution to this whole thing." She swallowed. "We both keep saying that we should have been with her..."

"Then you two would be zombies and I'd be out even more friends because of this fucking zombie invasion." Why yes, K-Mart had gone from scared to pissed off.

She looked up from the flamethrower and frowned. "Who else," she managed.

"Hurley," K-Mart said, intent on her flamethrower at the moment.

"Oh god, no."

"Yeah," K-Mart said with a nod. "God... he came by my room after the field trip and we were joking about zombie mermaids and how he'd be screwed if a zombie got him. Doesn't seem so funny now."

"This.. this is so..."

She had no words.

K-Mart had words, but they weren't fit for repeating.

"I am so not telling Claire about this any time soon," K-Mart said. "She finds out about this, she'll yank me out of here without a second thought."

"Yeah. I can't tell my family, either." She looked back down, tears filling her eyes again.

K-Mart reached over, wrapping an arm around her friend's shoulders.

Hoshi felt a need to do something, but she wasn't silly enough to leave the safety of the dorm unprepared. The opportunity to make herself a weapon was not one to be passed up.

"Oh, what's going o--"

Turtle had gone to check on the situation of things, and then stopped.

"--are those flamethrowers?"

"Improvised ones, yeah," Triela nodded.

"I'm going to be honest," said Turtle, holding out her hands a little skeptically, "improvised is not the word I want included on a tool I'm going to use that dangerously throw flames everywhere."

"Yeah, well, you don't have to carry one if you don't want to," Triela shrugged. "Because these things could go boom."

"Uh-huh," Turtle said with a nod. "Good idea, though. I just put a lot of stock in, you know, company warranties and professionals behind their manufacturing."

"Well, there's something to be said for those things, but sometimes they're a luxury that isn't really an option."

"We've got a whole weapons locker filled with guns," Turtle pointed out. "To each their own, though. Like I said, good idea. I think I'm mostly just here for the pizza."

"True. And I probably won't use one of these. I've got special ammo for my shotgun, after all."

"Special ammo how? I mean, they're zombies. Doesn't all it takes is a good shot of anything to the brain?"

"Sort of. I mean, they take a lot of damage. Sometimes a headshot doesn't stop them. At least not just one. Fortunately I've got some things that can do a lot of damage."

"Like grenades?"

What?

Grenades could do a lot of damage.

"Yep." Triela grinned.

They did do a lot of damage.

"If I wasn't half as likely to blow of my own hand with one of those," Turtle said with a faint grin back, "I'd ask to borrow a few. I'm mostly hoping all that target work I've been doing pays off."

"It will," Triela said confidently. "That's part of why we do it all the time, after all. Because it helps."

Turtle nodded, although it was a little stiff with nervousness. "Yeah," she agreed. "Besides, I already know that kicking them does a lot of damage, too. Their dead flesh yields super easy, so there's always that."

"It's good to have a backup plan," Triela agreed. "Though I imagine they take quite a bit of kicking."

"That's why it's plan B," Turtle said with a nod. "Plan C, incidentally, is praying and thanking God that I've already written my will."

"What about running? I'd think that would come before the praying part."

"If I'm getting to Plan C," Turtle explained, "then I've failed at Plan B. Plan B is kicking, which is a close-ranged assault. If it's failing, odds are, running isn't an option at that point."

Triela nodded. "You're pretty good at this tactics thing, you know."

That was totally a compliment.

Turtle grinned, as she could never imagine a situation where it wouldn't have been one.

"Thanks, Triela. One can't express how important it is to try to see things from all sides, even zombie death."

Triela flashed a quick grin. "And having good instincts helps."

"I like to think I've got at least a few of those, too."

"You do."

Triela looked around. "Flame throwers," she nodded in approval. "Good idea."

Sokka came down from showering and feeding his chinchilla, and was about to go back out when... "DUUUUUUDE!"

He grinned at Anakin. "Any chance on us doing lightsabers next?"

"There is no chance of you doing lightsabers next," Anakin told him from where he was guarding the lighter fluid. "They take at least two months to make properly."

"...And they're only for Jedis, I know," Sokka pouted. Not because he actually thought they would have GOTTEN to, but just for the principle of it. "Flamethrowers it is!" He set to work on his with gusto.

If you set it on fire with your flamethrower, Anakin's gonna be unhappy.

K-Mart was starving, partly because she'd been working so hard and partly because she hadn't eaten very much in the past few days.

If anybody wanted to take away that entire pepperoni pizza she was guarding, they'd have to fight her for it.

I couldn't resist.

This has officially turned Anakin into K-Mart's favorite teacher, I tell you. Not that he wasn't already, but y'know.

And now there is even more reason that Savannah likes and trusts Anakin.

Aww. Like Tahiri didn't already feel justified enough in liking him. :D
