The Roof, Tuesday Evening

It had been a week since Art Crawl, and a week since Katchoo had seen Francine. You'd think, living on the same floor of the dorms and all, they'd have run into each other by now but by pure dumb luck Katchoo hadn't so much as caught a glimpse of her best friend.

If that was still the case, considering the way Francine had run off after their last conversation. She hadn't exactly had more friends than she could count on one hand anyway, and at least two of them were graduating soon. Factoring that in wasn't helping with the melancholy. Yes, melancholy -- she didn't have the energy to work up a proper rage.

She probably should have been studying for finals, but please, when had Katchoo ever cared about things like that? So the roof it was, feet dangling off the edge as she lit up what was probably going to be the first of way too many cigarettes tonight.

"Yeah?" Tony smiled and glanced over at Katina, wondering if there was more than friendship there. Not that it was his business, anyway. "So she'll come around."

"Here's hoping," Katchoo said in a voice that didn't sound optimistic at all. "She's never run away before. First time for everything, I guess. You know her?"

"We've talked a few times," Tony said. "I mean, I don't know, she could eat babies on toast with a side of pickles, but she seems cool. Really innocent, but cool."

"Toast with a side of pickles, maybe. Hold the babies." Was that a very tiny smile twitching at one corner of Katchoo's mouth? Maybe. Or maybe it was a trick of the light. "She's about the nicest person in any one of the fifty billion frikkin' worlds represented by the student body here."

"Is that her secret superpower?" Tony smiled.

"Could damn well be," Katchoo allowed. She was kind of biased on the subject. "God knows it isn't her keen powers of observation."

Tony shrugged. "Guess she's got you for that."

Katchoo huffed something that, if you stretched it to the breaking point, might almost be a laugh. "Not at the moment she doesn't."

"So she'll have to get her act together," Tony said.

"Yep." Katchoo absentmindedly knocked her cigarette against the edge of the roof to get rid of the long taper of ash that had started to form. "Fun times, huh?"

"Want a hug?" Tony joked. He tapped the ash of his cigarette as well.

". . . tell me that was a joke, and you actually have a sense of self preservation."

Tony held his hands up in the international gesture of no weapons, see? "Joke. I swear. Really dumb joke."

"Actually, that was pretty frikkin' funny," Katchoo conceded. "At least from where I'm sitting. If you'd been serious, on the other hand . . ."

"No, you don't strike me as someone who's big on hugs," Tony said.

"And you prove you have a clue," Katchoo answered, which for her was actually a pretty magnanimous statement.
