3rd Floor Common Room - Friday morning

With nothing to do and no roommate to talk to, Penelope wandered down the hall to the common room with her box of Ho Ho's tucked under her arm. She poured herself a glass of milk and walked over to the couch and made herself comfortable before she reached for the remote to turn the TV on. Finding nothing much of interest, she left it on the food channel, settling in to watch this man make pastry.

Penelope should really learn to cook.

"Good morning, Joan," Penelope said politely. "It's fine, I suppose. How are you?"

"Not too bad," Joan said. "Though I think I might just hide out in my room all weekend."

"Why's that?" she asked, and because she was eating Ho Ho's, offered Joan the box if she'd like. "Care for a Ho Ho?"

"Ooh, thanks," Joan said, taking one. "Because there are new students arriving this weekend. It's gonna be mass chaos."

Oh, that's right. She'd almost forgotten. Looking a little dismayed, she admitted, "I might hide out too."

"We could hide out together," she offered.

She grinned. "We should. I remember the picnic when I first came. It can be very daunting. I see nothing wrong with hiding."

"Plus there's the inevitable conversations about how weird this place is," Joan reminded her.

"I can only imagine the questions directed at me, and I'm not willing to wear my scarf in such warm weather. I can deal with one person at a time, but a large group? I don't think so."

"Yeah, I didn't even think about that," she admitted. "I'm glad you stopped wearing your scarf though."

She smiled somewhat shyly at Joan. "Everyone was so accepting; I realized I didn't need it. New students, I believe, should be broken in before they see me."

Joan nodded. "I can understand that. No need to cause yourself undue stress."

"I know, and I'm still dealing with Claire leaving. But enough of that. Are you looking forward to the cabins?" she asked.

"Yeah, that must suck," she said. "I dunno. I'm not really the outdoorsy type, but it might be fun."

"I'm not either," she admitted. "Not that I was given a chance growing up, but the whole camping vibe - I'm a little unsure, but I think I might be a touch excited." After all, Penelope loved adventures and she was looking at this as one.

"At least it's only a few weeks," Joan said. "And we have electricity and running water and everything."

She nodded. "And I hear there are campfires."

Joan grinned. "Yeah, those could definitely be fun."

"I've never roasted a marshmallow and am quite looking forward to seeing how this is done," she went on. "Not to mention the S'mores."

"Seriously? Wow, it's definitely fun. I like catching the marshmellows on fire."

"I've never had the opportunity. I didn't even know one could roast a marshmallow." Sheltered life was sheltered.

"Wow," Joan said again. "Well, I'll make sure you get to do that this summer."

Her grin was wide. "It should be fun. Are you going home at all during the summer?"

"Probably some, but not for any length of time," Joan said. "What about you?"

"The same. The week between summer sessions," she said. "Mother expects me." And of course there was the matter of Penelope's wedding, but she was entirely hush hush about that.
