William Howard Taft Campfire - Tuesday night

Amber was roasting a hot dog and drinking beer. The latter she might have indulged in before the roasting began, but who cares? It was a nice night and she was going to enjoy it her way.

There was no singing going on here, just so you know.

Someone plopped onto the log next to her with a faint smile.

"Hey."

"Well hey, cutie," she said, grinning at him.

He leaned against her and offered his arm.

"I could say the same. In fact, I think I will. 'Well hey, cutie'."

He was in a good mood.

She leaned against him, beer in hand, stick in the other.

"This is oddly familiar," she giggled. "And you're in a good mood."

He pulled her closer and kissed her cheek.

"I am. And so are you, it seems. Enjoying the campfire?"

"You've been busily meeting people," she said and set her stick carefully aside. "I'm so glad, and yah, I am. It's nice and warm and pretty."

He nodded.

"I've been getting out more, yes. And, of course, we're in the cabins so there's no hiding.

"I've discovered Makejoy makes a very good pillow."

He gave her a squeeze before asking:

"And how have you been?"

He should get out more. Others could only benefit from knowing him.

She should know.

"I miss her," she said. "Maybe you'd allow me to take her for a walk sometime this week?"

"And I'm just fine, Liir. Just fine."

He didn't look as if he believed her entirely, but he was willing to let it rest.

"You could always visit and walk with us both. The preserve is a nice place to wander."

"Sure, I can do that," she said, and gazed back at the fire.

"So weird, you know? Not having anything to do. Aside from work and TA'ing for Loki, I have all this time to myself. Guess I better enjoy it now."

"Probably for the best. You could keep me company at work on Friday if you like?"

"You just want to feed me cookies and tea," she teased, nudging him with her shoulder.

"And would that be such a horrible crime?"

Jennifer wasn't lost, she just wanted to meet people.

"Is it okay to sit here?" she asked.

"Oh, yah, you betcha," she replied, grinning.

"Hi. I'm Amber Atkins."

"Jennifer Walters," she introduced herself. "I probably don't even need to say I'm new, do I?"

"Not to me at least," she said. "Oldie here. Still, bet you'll get asked that a thousand times over the course of the week."

"Probably," Jennifer said. "Good thing I'm okay to answer it. It beats people just assuming things."

Amber grinned. "Sure does. Where you from anyway, Jennifer?"

"Los Angeles," Jennifer said. "And you can call me Jen, if you want."

She nodded. "I've never been to California but one day will make my way there. Why'd you come here, or more importantly are you liking it so far?"

"I am enjoying it," Jennifer said. "My dad sent me here. Wasn't exactly my choice."

"Ah, ususally the case with most around here. I hope you'll find his choice worth it; it's really a great place and the classes are pretty awesome."

"I hope so, too," Jennifer said, a smile covering her true feelings on the matter. "Anything else you think I should know?"

"That depends," she chuckled, "on what you've been told already."
