Kenshin had had an interesting day. Interesting enough that the relative quiet and darkness of the rooftop was a relief. He sat with his back to the light of the campfires, and stared out into the night, emptying his mind, so that hopefully he could sleep. He wasn't worried about anyone sneaking up behind him; he would hear them before they got close enough to be a threat.

How long his solitude would remain solitude...

Well.

He nodded.

"I met him," he replied. "He told me about something called 'teevee' and 'radio.'"

"Did he warn you about the squirrels?" Tahiri asked.

"Yes. He mentioned them." Kenshin grimaced.

"Not thrilled by that idea either, are you?" Tahiri asked with some sympathy. "You and half the island."

"Do you know why they're there?" he grumbled.

"No idea, other than they're probably native life. Of the special Fandom kind," Tahiri said. Wow, he was grumbly, huh? "It's just one of those things you have to get used to around here."

"...It's like being surrounded by miniature ninja at all hours of day and night," he said with a sigh.

Grumbly, bad-tempered, teenaged killer, yep.

"I'm pretty sure they're just nosy, not deadly," Tahiri offered, "unless you're actually in the radio booth and they don't like what you have to say about their newsgathering. So anyway . . . what's your world like?"

"There's a war," he replied. "Blood and death in the streets. But under all that... It's beautiful. I believe that we can win, and make a world where people can live in peace and freedom."

She made a face. "Your world too? That's how mine is. We've been at war for three years or so now. Sometimes I wonder if that's how it always is, and the peace is just an occasional break."

"I hope not," Kenshin replied. "I'd like to make a lasting peace, if I can."

Even if he had to bathe himself in blood to bring it.

"I hope you can too," she answered sincerely. For his world, anyway -- she wasn't holding out much hope for hers. "You've been fighting in it too, haven't you? I can kind of tell."

"I have," he replied. "It means a lot to me."

Tahiri rubbed absently at her forehead and nodded. "Same here." It meant a lot to both parts of her, just in completely opposite ways.

"...Are you all right?" he asked after a moment.

"Fine," Tahiri assured him quickly. "Honestly. It was an interesting day."

Beat.

"Mostly the good kind, though."

"You need to make that kind of distinction a lot around here?"

"Around here?" Tahiri chuckled slightly. "Actually, yes. Things can be interesting in an awful lot of different ways."

"Heh. ...Things haven't been the good kind of interesting back home..." he trailed off, finishing softly, "...for a long time. But I'm going to change that," he continue quietly. "Whatever it takes."

Tahiri studied him for a moment, then nodded. "I can respect that," she said, both Tahiri and Riina meaning it wholeheartedly. "In which case I can say it's definitely good to meet you."

"In that case, it's good to meet you, too," he replied. "...What's your world like?" he asked after a moment.

"Huge," Tahiri said, her lips quirking up slightly. "Hundreds of planets, all of them really, really different. Thousands of different races, and lots of complex politics that I don't really have the patience for."

”Most warriors don't," he pointed out.

"Which is why we're not politicians," Tahiri replied, though a little bit of a self-conscious look crossed her face at being called a warrior. "Most of us, anyway. Some of us Jedi are expected to know how to do both."

"That's what Ben said. It would be nice to be able to end conflict without violence, but I don't think I'll live to see that world come to be."
