Rutherford B. Hayes campfire, Tuesday evening

Dinah got a fire going in front of the cabin after dinner by dint of a firestarter, some lighter fluid, and a lot of newspaper, then settled in with her laptop and downloaded Radio podcasts from the WiFi in town, to catch up on what she'd missed.

Pretty soon you could hear exclamations of "No way!" ... "What?!" and "Oh my god, Tony wasn't making that up?"

"Exactly! That would be fun! Of course, I'd have to double the webs. I mean, clearly..." Karla rambled on to herself for a few minutes, more thinking aloud than anything else.

"Hey," she said once she'd finished designing some of the tangled webs in her head, "are you going to the multicultural fair? And did I tell you IC what I had planned for Kaeleer?"

"Well, at first I didn't think I could do anything. I was serious when I said I boil toast and burn water, so even if I could get the proper ingredients, I couldn't make proper Kaeleeran food. And I certainly wasn't going to stand around and sings folk songs and lullabies all day."

"But then, I got to thinking about Liir's excellent device, the one that captures memories and allows other people to experience them. I'll be spinning a major tangled web tomorrow, one that will let people experience some of my memories of Kaeleer. I already know that riding unicorns will be in there."

Karla looked at Dinah anxiously. "Do you think people will enjoy something like that?"

Karla shook her head. "No, his device won't work, but we'll be going over the theory, which I'll be able to work into my tangled web." She paused. "Do you think anyone will mind if I move stuff out of the common room and spin it in there? My alcove isn't big enough. Or maybe I should just do it outside. Hmm."

Karla grinned. She hadn't been entirely certain that her idea would go over well, but, then again, who wouldn't want to ride a unicorn. "You're probably right. I'm just worried about the weather. Though I could just put a shield over the entire thing. Hmm...do I have enough chips lying around for this?"

"Potatoes?" Karla asked, just as confused. "What do potatoes have to do with chips?"

Karla called in the necklace she had loaned Dinah. Strung on the silver chain was a small blue gem, no bigger than the tip of her pinky finger. "If a witch receives an uncut Jewel for either her Birthright Ceremony or the Offering to the Darkness, she has to get it set. The Jewel is generally usually big enough to fashion a pendant, a pair of earrings, perhaps a ring, and still have enough chips and fragments left over to use as focal points for spells and the like." She vanished the necklace again.

"Food chips?" Karla laughed. "Probably not." Instead she called in a small, intricately carved wooden book, one half the size of her palm. She opened it, revealing the box was half-full of fragments of various sizes, from one the size of her thumbnail, to several that were mere specks.

Karls estimated the amount of chips in the box with a small frown. Sure, there were a decent number of chips in there, but she did have another five years before she'd get anymore. On the one hand, she could always reuse chips. On the other, cleansing them properly was a real pain in the ass.

"Mmm. Fried potatoes. That sounds really good, actually," Karla said.

"Well, the Jewels just appear during the ceremonies. The chips are created when you get the Jewels set. I'm not entirely sure what people who get cut Jewels do, though. But, yes, these are mine. I got two uncut Sapphires for my Birthright Ceremony, and this is what's left after we set them." Karla pulled out her teardrop-shaped Sapphire pendant. "This took most of the first one. I've got a pair of earrings and a ring set with the Sapphire from the second, but I mostly only wear those for a special occasion of if I'm doing a lot of Craft."

"You could keep me company," Karla offered. "I'd prefer if you didn't try to help, though. You're not a trained Black Widow, so you might get trapped within the weave before I was done." That would be...bad. Karla had no desire to see her friend wandering mindlessly through the Twisted Kingdom. "And ply me with food and drink so that I don't starve to death." That last suggestion was made with the most pitiful expression Karla could manufacture.

"That is a perfectly fair trade," Karla said, grinning. "Though I can't wait for you to try the pickleberries."

Perhaps that would have sounded less ominous, if she hadn't been doing her best to look completely innocent.
