Chips and salsa probably didn't count as dinner for most people, but considering that it was about the extent of Emma's cooking ability, it would have to make due. As agitated as she was right now, she's burn down the dorms if she so much as tried to make popcorn.

Which, if people would shut up, she wouldn't be having this problem.

Food achieved, she settled in on the couch and started channel surfing. It had been over a year of no television: time to see if cable had anything worth watching.

"Going to school?" Ronan offered, settling comfortably onto the couch. His brain was likely a little harder to pick than Emma might have expected; his mind wasn't shielded exactly, but he was well-used to guarding thoughts as well as sharing them. "Or, well, working in the clinic, now; I graduated last month."

"Happy late graduation, then," Emma replied. "The clinic? Are you going to medical school, then, or just killing time and collecting a paycheck?"

"Killing time, mostly, for the moment," Ronan said. "I'm not sure yet when I'll be off to university; a friend of mine's traveling off-world right now, I may do the same thing. Drop in on her, maybe travel a bit with her, maybe on my own."

"Off-world." Emma grinned and shook her head. "I can't even imagine that."

Ronan shrugged. "There are a lot of wizards where I come from who've never been off-world," he said. "Probably haven't even thought about it. There's a whole wide universe out there, though, and there's no need to ignore it. Loads of worlds I've heard about that I want to visit, and friends I want to meet up with."

"Like what sort of worlds?" Emma was genuinely curious now, which was rare. "Seriously, I've never been outside Boston or New York. Everything I can think of has concrete or skyscrapers."

"All kinds," Ronan said. "Some I couldn't even imagine. A friend of mine, Filif? He's a Demisiv -- they evolved from trees. Their entire planet is covered with migrating forests. No industry to speak of."

"Tree-people?" Emma repeated, eyes going wide. "And they've got wizards too?"

She shook her head. "Amazing. You have to understand; before I got here? I'd met maybe three other people with powers, and no one like me. You and Karla are the only ones I've found who can tell when I'm doing - " she waved one hand idly, " - my thing, let alone talk back without my help."

"Most species in the universe -- my universe, anyway -- have wizards," Ronan explained. "Of some variety. The cat wizards, for example, are responsible for maintaining the worldgates, because they can see the hyperstrings naturally, and a friend of mine -- a whale -- is senior for Earth's oceans." He shrugged. "Dogs are even starting to have wizards, now, though they didn't for the longest time."

He smiled at the idea of only know three other people with powers. "I suppose I had it easy, coming here," he added. "I mean, it's not that wizards are all that common back home, but I know some, and there's comfort that there are always more out there. Coming here, it was odd to see people with different kinds of powers, but not odd to see so many. You'll find others, too, who are telepaths -- there's a touch-telepath here, and I know at least two people who've graduated already, and left the island, who were psychics as well."

"Hank says there's others like us, lots of others, but he's a bit, well," Emma made the international sign for 'crazy' near her head. "Not exactly suited to help me work on staying inside my own brain."

Or to help her poke around in other's heads, either.

"I could work with that, if you wanted," Ronan offered. "Not that I'm an expert by any means, but if you just wanted practice?"
