Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

"The fire drill last week had a good premise," Arthur began, as soon as everyone had gathered. Even if he'd disagreed with the execution of it. "We'll continue mapping out the island today, although our current task is far more simple. In the event of a sudden attack, we must be aware of the easiest and quickest trails leading to a gathering point or a way of getting off the island. When the alligators invaded, many of us met up at the park - that's one location. There are only two ways off the island: either by boat from the docks, or by causeway. I'd like you all to go to one of these three locations by use of the route that seems fastest to you. Then return to us, and we'll compare exit strategies."

Leto had managed to acquire copies of a map of the island. "These might be helpful when you decide on a route, and will enable you to communicate your choice with precision to everyone else." He held the maps up, and offered everyone to take one.

He nodded at Leto once, then turned back to those gathered. "In case of another invasion, we should meet in the park if the threat is dispersed, or at the gates when it seems to be more cohesive. That way, we'll be able to coordinate our strategy accordingly." He nodded at ~~shamelessly modded~~ Zack as well, and let the exercise commence.

"Through-town is a shorter straight-line distance. It also provides more cover. More obstacles too, but I think we can handle those." She tilted her head, "Also, running on sand isn't usually a good idea."

Ben shrugged. "In an evac, good idea hardly ever factors in."

Triela considered that, then nodded. "I suppose it would depend on whether we're extracting ourselves or covering a civilian movement. Civilians would need the open space, but if it were just us the cover would probably be more useful." She pursed her lips. "Got a preference?"

"I want to jump on rooftops," Ben admitted.

Triela laughed. "Town it is, then."

She glanced over at him. "I've already got a route through town to the docks planned." It was better to be prepared. "Want to use that or want to improvise?"

"Let me see what you've come up with," Ben decided.

Triela's personal maps were in her room, but she knew the route well enough to trace it from memory. "This one assumes hostiles between us and the extraction point," she explained as she ~~handwaviliy~~ ran her finger along a route that consisted of an awful lot of running through alleys, hopping fences, and climbing around on rooftops. "It maximizes cover and provides a number of backup routes without taking too complicated a route."

"Are there ways to modify it in case of leg injuries?" he asked. "Not that I'm planning on sustaining any, of course."

That drew a thoughtful frown. "No. I can't sustain a significant leg injury without enough damage that I'd probably lose the leg anyway, so I actually hadn't considered the need."

Which was a sloppy oversight.

He nodded, then looked back at the map. "If we turn off here," he suggested, "there wouldn't be quite as much hopping necessary, though the cover isn't quite as good."

"You're right. And I haven't run that route before." She cocked her head. "Want to give it a go, then?"

"Definitely," Ben said. "Go!"

He took off running toward the gate.

Triela took a single moment to shake her head in amusement before she took off after him.

Ben saw no reason to go through the gate when he could go over, so his boot found a tiny foothold and he used it to launch himself over the wall.

He might've enjoyed yesterday's class a little too much.

In a run like this, even if it was just a training exercise, Triela was willing to capitalize on her enhancements. She launched herself upward from the ground, planting one hand on top of the wall to keep her trajectory under control, and landed heavily on the other side.

Ben noted the heaviness as he dropped to the ground with barely a sound, then went bolting down the street in a reflexive zig-zag pattern, racing for cover.

Triela weighed more than someone her size should, by a lot, really. And her boots weren't designed to be quiet either. They made a lot of noise as her feet pounded the ground in her own race for cover. She took a more direct approach than Ben did. She still hadn't really learned how to temper her aggression with prudence, so she figured getting to her goal was more important than being a hard target.

Ben didn't exactly agree with that philosophy, but he'd been trained in a different way. He used a set of stairs to launch himself onto the nearest roof.

For a moment Triela ran along side the building he was on top of before she decided that it was probably clearer on top. She had to change directions to leap and scramble up the wall, and that meant she lost some ground by the time she got to the top.

Ben was already leaping to the next rooftop, this one a story taller than the one they had started on.

Triela rushed to catch up. In a straight-line run her enhancements gave her significant advantages and she wasn't far behind him when she made the same leap.

Ben laughed. "What took you so long?" he teased, swinging around a chimney.

"Decided to take the scenic route," she tossed back easily as she dodged around it the other way. "You didn't have to wait around for me, you know."

"Thought it was polite," he replied, sprinting for the next rooftop.

"How gallant," Triela snorted as she kept pace with him, dodging the occasional rooftop obstruction.
