Fifth Floor Common Room, Friday Morning

Raven had had a much more restful sleep that night, thanks in no small part to the strength Professor Anakin had added to her shields. And he hadn't thrown her out of the school for using her powers on Chuck, so that lightened her mood as well. (And she hadn't listened to the radio and heard herself referred to as having a weird kink about doors.) She decided to test her shielding by venturing into the common room. Someone had left the TV on, and she found herself mesmerized by what was on, a strange show featuring a scruffy madman who had somehow schemed to turn the woman he loved into a mummy. He was currently fondling her bandage-wrapped form while her sister debated how to rescue her.

Romeo was just trying to find the coffee, really, but he ended up lingering to stare at the TV.

"Please tell me she's at least still alive."

"I believe so," Raven said. "He seems to think she can be restored. It is very odd. She hates him, but he loves her deeply." She couldn't get an empathic read on the television characters, but the show seemed to make their emotions clear.

Romeo filled his mug with coffee and added cream and sugar.

"I suppose restoring her might make her love him back," he said as he found his way to a seat. "She'd be grateful, at least."

"Perhaps," Raven said. "I must admit I do not understand much about the ways of courtship, however."

Ino wandered into the common room in search a) granola and b) fruit and sort of blinked at the screen.

"So. . .he's into necrophilia?"

Ewww.

"She is not quite dead yet," Raven said. "Just...mostly dead."

[intraspective]

"Nooo," she said, chopping up a banana and glancing over her shoulder, "but if he wants to make her dead, isn't that a pretty good guess that he is? I mean, ew, mummy-sex."

Oh, Ino.

"Is there a story behind that, or are you just not yet interested?" Romeo asked, shifting his attention from the coffee to the girl. "I'm Romeo Montague, by the way. I don't think we've met so I'd assume you're new."

"My name is Rachel Roth," Raven said. "Yes, I am a new student. And it is not much of a story. I have been trained to deny all emotion, which would preclude falling in love and courtship." Nope, still not bitter about it, really.

Robin yawned a bit when he came in. His internal clock had woken him and then he'd gone in search of people.

"Good morning." he waved. "What's this?" He pointed to the tv.

"I think he intends to restore her to life," Raven said. "But I could be mistaken. The storyline is very strange."

"Good morning," Raven said. "It is a television show of some sorts, a fantasy-drama. I believe it is entitled Enchanted. It is quite strange."

...

That got Ino squinting at the screen.

"...but mummies are dead by definition. Dead and reanimated."

"Unless you were being married off for position," Romeo said. "I'm sorry. There's a teacher here with a society like that. It seemed inhumane to me."

"He claims to love her, so that must not bother him," Raven said. "I would find it distressing myself."

"Would they still go through the pretense of courtship then, if the outcome was predetermined?" Raven wondered. "If I were allowed to wed, I suspect I would find someone else choosing my lifemate to be unacceptable."

[intraspective]

"Necrophilia kink," she said decisively, wandering out with her food. "Definitely. I'm Ino, by the by, from Room 504."

"Rachel," Raven said. "Rachel Roth. I dwell in room 509."

[intraspective]

"Nice to meet you!" she said brightly. "And, you're totally a new kid, right?"

"I'm not," Ino added, "I'm going on two years now, so I recognize at the very least all the older students by looks anyway."

[trigons_child]

Raven nodded. "Yes, I have only been here since the summer term began. I have not gotten out much, however. It is a pleasure to meet you as well."

"I only know how it works at home," Romeo cautioned. "In Verona, you'd go through a bit of the charade. Good parents wouldn't want their daughter to wed someone she could not stand to be near, so you'd spend some time together with whoever they selected before the engagement was announced."

His voice got distant; he was thinking about something far away and long ago. "Of course, not everyone has good parents."

Ino gave a bit of a shrug at that. "Why haven't you?" she asked interestedly. "Homesick, or something?"

"In my home, there is little need of physical love and therefore marriage," Raven said. "Those of Azarath magically extend their lifetimes, so it is rare for two to join to create a child, and when they do, it is for logical reasons, not emotional ones."

"I was having difficulty with so many people close by," Raven admitted. "Professor Skywalker is helping me to be able to withstand it. I am an empath, and I am unused to having so many emotions around me."
