Magical Reserve - Preserve Next to the Cabins, Wednesday

"Hullo everyone!" Merlin greeted those who came with perhaps a bit less of the enthusiasm he had about ice cream the other night.

Alright, quite a bit less.

"Today we'll be trying a bit of what the fighters did yesterday with hide and seek. Though for us, I think it ought to be okay to use a bit of magic to aid ourselves. If you're able."

Which, sadly, he was not.

"So, pair up and get to work."

Merlin paused, looking around. "I hope so. It's hard to tell sometimes."

"How's it 'hard to tell'?" Arthur looked around himself.

"Who is here for the right reason and who isn't."

"Ah."

He took a seat by the edge of the tree.

"Have you asked any of them?"

"Perhaps that ought to be our exercise next week."

"And here I was just coming 'round to the idea that magic was more than just talking," Arthur said, dryly.

"We do set things on fire occasionally," Merlin admitted. "Or freeze them."

"Try freezing next time," Arthur advised, "It's less likely to cause mass destruction amongst the trees."

Beat.

"Does that mean you can set up an ice rink?"

"An ice rink?"

"They have these round... ice... slabs they go on," Arthur muttered, "Apparently they make the ice themselves."

"They have one of those here?" How on earth had he missed that?

"Not here," he shot back, immediately, "It's the midst of summer. I... read about it, there's supposed to be one on this mythical mainland of theirs."

In another universe, one where they could cross the causeway and any number of other factors were different, this would be a preamble to asking someone out on a date.

It was probably a good thing Arthur was sort of oblivious to that.

Merlin paused for a moment. "Would you like me to make one?"

"I was just curious to see if you could," Arthur replied, leaning further into that tree. Let Merlin carry on with his cleaning business.

"Alright," Merlin replied slowly and picked up a stack of paper saucers. They really were rather handy.

"So beyond ice rinks and burning down preserves," Arthur said, after a moment or two, "How's the growing things bit coming along?"

"I'm working on it still," Merlin admitted. "It's... hard. You need to figure out how to remind the seed what it wants to be."

"'Remind it what it wants to be'?"

This was Arthur. He had maaany questions.

He was also achieving that Look he had upon occasion, where Merlin appeared to be fascinating to the point of him trying to figure the boy out.

"To be a plant. It's not getting the soil or water or time it thinks it needs, so it's hard to get around."

'Hard to get around'.

Arthur actually had to snort out a slight laugh at that. It wasn't a mean one. "No soil or water and it's just 'hard to get around' to you," he said.

Merlin looked up a bit sheepishly. "It's possible, I'm certain of it. Karla wouldn't have tried to teach it if not. I just need to figure out how."

"Don't strain that mind of yours too much," Arthur informed him, "It doesn't go that far."

He pushed away from the tree. "So am I going to find you talking to the undergrowth now?"

"No, Arthur."

"Babbling to raddishes?" Arthur tried, looking entirely too amused. "Chatting with carrots?"

"Pontificating with cabbages?" Merlin suggested.
