Zack was in a darn good mood, in spite of a pair of slightly blackened eyes and a tender nose that was a little on the crunchy side, but was totally hard-earned.

Why was he so chipper?

Because it was Rookie Day at the reserves, that was why! New people on the island meant that there were probably going to be new people here today, and Zack was totally happy to take the reigns and lead the troops!

"Okay! So, we've got a new term, and ~~possibly~~ a few new faces, so we're going to do our introductions over again! Names, fighting experience, and weapons proficiency, as well as any other skills you think might come in handy in the case of an invasion, if you please!"

Arthur shot him a slightly sideways look. "Before we get to that," he said, scraping his throat, "I am Prince Arthur Pendragon, leader of the reserves, and these are my," sidekicks, "fellow commanders, Lord Leto Atreides the Second, and Zack Fair, SOLDIER Second Class. We're willing to help you if you are in need of any further combat training, as are your fellow reserve members, I'm sure." Look, he was being good.

Zack blinked. Ooooh, right. Introductions for them was probably important too, huh?

"That's right! Come and see any of us if you're looking for help with..." Headtilt. Ponder. "Anything, really. Oh! And we have maps of the island, too! We're going to hand those out, and if the seasoned members would be so kind as to show the rookies what to look out for around here, like areas where the terrain might grant a tactical advantage, or training areas, or things to watch out for, that'd be great!"

"As for the rest of you, if you find anyone who might be interested in joining us, spread the word," Arthur called, "I know you lot think you're good, but you can always use another kick in the arse." This was what passed for humour, clearly. "Work well today. We'll see come next week."

"It's just I know I've probably got a better chance if I don't let the bad guys near me," Turtle said, a little wryly, and definitely frank. "Not unless I'm kicking them. My shinkick is my trump card."

"Remind me to not get on your bad side," Zack decided, nodding pleasantly. "But your method does make sense. They can't hurt you if they can't get to you, right? If you're comfortable with a gun, then all power to you."

"Unless some one's got bigger guns, anyway," Turtle said with a slight sigh. "Do you have any suggestions, Zack, for what's a good melee weapon for an utter newb without much strength or technique to start with?"

"Honestly, I'd say to start with whatever you have an interest in," Zack replied, shrugging faintly. "I took up a sword because that's what members of SOLDIER just use. But picking the one and going with it means I could focus on just the one. I wouldn't suggest a sword for someone who isn't so strong, unless you picked up something lighter, like a rapier maybe."

He tapped his chin thoughtfully.

"I know that Dinah uses eskrima, and Blysse has a dagger that she calls her fang, and Gabrielle has a staff. I'm not saying that those don't need technique, really, but they are definitely lightweight. And having something like a dagger on you means that you have something that you can pull out just in case the enemy does get too close."

A pause.

"Or if they're wearing shin-guards or something."

Turtle snorted a little with a grin. "Shin-guards. My true Achilles' heel. How's this, then? Once the practical weaponry workshop gets started, maybe I'll find something that really feels like something I'll want to pursue, and, if I do, I'll come track you down and see if there's anything you can do to help so I can start building a focus."

Then she shrugged, a somewhat modest gesture.

"And, if you're interested, I'll return the favor and maybe show you around a gun a bit. I mean, I use a small pistol but it's pretty easy to pick up. I'm by no means an expert, but my technique is sound."

"Now that sounds like a plan," Zack agreed, grinning. "Let me know if there is anything that catches your interest, then. We'll see what we can't do to set you up with one of your own, and then we'll get you practising with it in no time."

He was pretty sure that he had access to most different weapons that people around here used. Except maybe lightsabers. Those were kind of a special deal, there.

"And from there, we'll see about letting me near a gun, huh?"

Which, really, only sounded a little scary once Turtle actually had a chance to hear it and think about Zack with a gun.

But if they followed all the proper, careful safety protocol...

Turtle smile, sticking out her hand. "Zack, I think we've got a deal."

Zack would be careful around a gun, honest! If anyone got shot in the foot, it would be him anyhow.

He smiled and took her hand, giving it a firm shake.

"Good doing business with you again, then!"

"Always a pleasure!" Turtle said, very professionally except for the slight giggle she couldn't really help.
