Salle [after classes]

Ben didn't have classes on Wednesdays, but he did have a weekly ~~butt-kicking~~ sparring session with his grandfather tomorrow and he hadn't practiced at all during his week in Archenland.

Besides, he'd promised Zack to show how a lightsaber worked. So, after slapping up a helpful "LIVE FIRE. KNOCK BEFORE ENTERING" sign on the door, he was in the salle with his lightsaber and four remotes, batting laser beams harmlessly into walls.

Not that he'd admit it, but the familiar feel of lightsaber practice was calming his rather jangled nerves.

There was no way that Zack was going to miss the lightsaber demonstration that Ben had offered up yesterday. Not in a million, trillion, bajillion years.

In fact, the moment all of the classes had left out, Zack was making a beeline for the salle. There was awesomeness afoot. Or... Astralness. Or something!

He knocked, and then waited for a few moments before peering inside.

"Hey, Ben!"

Ben grinned as he looked toward the door, the four remotes frozen in place where they hovered in the air. "Hi, Zack!"

Zack had been in the room for all of three seconds, and he was already making eyes at the remotes.

"So, that's your training equipment, huh?" He walked a little closer, leaning forward to get a better look, and then noticed the lightsaber.

Oh, shiny.

Just because the 'ooooooo' wasn't audible didn't mean it wasn't there.

Ben nodded. "When I don't have someone with a lightsaber to fight against," he said. "And these are really good for getting used to being shot at." He smiled. "Not everyone is happy to see Jedi for some reason."

"SOLDIER doesn't have as many fans as you'd think we would, either," Zack noted, nodding in understanding. "Does it have to be a lightsaber that goes up against those things? Or do you think a sword like mine would survive an attempt?"

"These aren't set on kill at all," Ben said. "I've gotten my fair share of shots to the...rear end." He shook his head. "The remotes have a sense of humor."

"Well, good to know that they can keep a guy on his toes." Zack reached back to grab his sword. "Mind if I join in?"

Tahiri'd been planning on getting some practice in herself, which was why she had her own lightsaber in hand when she slipped into the salle. (She still didn't get the point of soccer. Lightsaber practice, on the other hand . . .)

She'd be content with just watching for a while, though.

"Not at all," Ben said with a grin, giving the remotes a mental nudge and turning two of them back on. Four was pushing his limits and with another person to watch for as well, it was going to be a little too much.

Ben glanced up and smiled, then increased his pace a little.

Not showing off, really!

...much.

"Bring it on!"

Zack set his feet apart, holding his sword in front of himself as he watched the two remotes, kind of wary.

He supposed be probably should have asked what to expect from them, as he'd never actually seen them at work before, but where was the fun in that?

Absolutely no fun in that! But Ben came from a long line of people who jumped out of windows without checking to see how high off the ground they were, so he might not be the best judge of what was insane.

The remotes spun around the two boys, then began shooting little red laser beams toward their chests. They'd start off easy, then adapt as the guys got going.

Between Ben's family and their jumping out of windows, and Zack's flying leaps out of helicopters onto moving trains below, they were really quite the pieces of work, weren't they?

Sanity need not apply.

A little beam came Zack's way, and he brought his sword up to deflect it without missing a beat. Oh. That's what they did! Another one was deflected in the same manner, and Zack couldn't help but steal a sideways glance in the hopes of seeing Ben's lightsaber in action.

Ben eyes were intently focused on the remotes, and his lightsaber was beginning to move faster and faster as the remotes compensated for how good he was.

The zapping noises made it seem like Ben was wielding the galaxy's most astral bug zapper.

For really, really big bugs?

"This," Zack decided between one shot and the next, "is really," parry, "really," block, "cool."

And now he was wondering how he could get one of these things for himself, yes.

"You're doing really well at it," Ben complimented, spinning and ricocheting a blast back at the remote. "What do you normally use to train with?"

"There's a training room on the SOLDIER floor," Zack replied, making a mental note that he was going to have to try that ricochet thing himself if he got the opportunity. For now, he'd content himself with not getting zapped. "Kind of like the Danger Shop here, actually. It builds up tangible simulations that we can battle against. Monsters and enemy troops and stuff like that."

Ben nodded. "We have something similar. No monsters to fight, but things to jump off of and throw and swing from while engaged in lightsaber combat. I bet Granddad probably has it programmed into the Danger Shop already, but he's kicking my butt well enough without worrying about gravity shifts and wind changes."

Because the room that Luke had come up with was thorough.

"Actually, that kinda sounds like fun," Zack noted, ever the thrill-seeker. "And your grandfather has that much more experience than you do, right? So that'd explain that. Is there anyone else you have to train with in a simulation like that?"

Because the jumping off and swinging from things bit sounded like it was right up Zack's alley.

"My grandfather's been a Jedi since he was ten," Ben said, blocking a shot to his right eye, "and has fought his way through, oh, two or three wars. But there are a few other Jedi my age here who could keep up with me."

He grinned. "And you're doing well, too. Think we should ask him to open that program up for us?"

"Couldn't hurt to ask," Zack replied, stooping low to avoid a shot to the shoulder while he brought his sword up to protect his face. "I'm no Jedi, and I haven't been training for quite as long, but if nothing else, it'll mean that much more of a workout."

He'd bounce around like a crazy man and enjoy every moment of it.

"Maybe some of the more advanced swordsmen, too?" Ben suggested. "No beginners--there'd be too much going on to worry about someone who still has problems with blocking."

"I bet Arthur would be all over something like that," Zack mused, grinning. "Worf would probably enjoy that kind of thing, too, even though his blade-thingie isn't really a sword."

It was big and swoopy and it looked like it would cause some wicked damage, though.

"Heck, Deadpool would have a blast..."

And now Zack was raking his brains for people who he'd seen work with a sword around here, yes.

"Leto's ridiculously good with knives, too," Ben mused. "Think we should come up with a list?"

"I think," Zack swatted another beam aside, "it would be a really, really easy list to make, Ben."

Fandom wasn't exactly lacking in people who were skilled with blades, was it?
