Salle [after classes]

Ben didn't have classes on Wednesdays, but he did have a weekly butt-kicking sparring session with his grandfather tomorrow and he hadn't practiced at all during his week in Archenland.

Besides, he'd promised Zack to show how a lightsaber worked. So, after slapping up a helpful "LIVE FIRE. KNOCK BEFORE ENTERING" sign on the door, he was in the salle with his lightsaber and four remotes, batting laser beams harmlessly into walls.

Not that he'd admit it, but the familiar feel of lightsaber practice was calming his rather jangled nerves.

There was no way that Zack was going to miss the lightsaber demonstration that Ben had offered up yesterday. Not in a million, trillion, bajillion years.

In fact, the moment all of the classes had left out, Zack was making a beeline for the salle. There was awesomeness afoot. Or... Astralness. Or something!

He knocked, and then waited for a few moments before peering inside.

"Hey, Ben!"

Ben grinned as he looked toward the door, the four remotes frozen in place where they hovered in the air. "Hi, Zack!"

Zack had been in the room for all of three seconds, and he was already making eyes at the remotes.

"So, that's your training equipment, huh?" He walked a little closer, leaning forward to get a better look, and then noticed the lightsaber.

Oh, shiny.

Just because the 'ooooooo' wasn't audible didn't mean it wasn't there.

Ben nodded. "When I don't have someone with a lightsaber to fight against," he said. "And these are really good for getting used to being shot at." He smiled. "Not everyone is happy to see Jedi for some reason."

"SOLDIER doesn't have as many fans as you'd think we would, either," Zack noted, nodding in understanding. "Does it have to be a lightsaber that goes up against those things? Or do you think a sword like mine would survive an attempt?"

"These aren't set on kill at all," Ben said. "I've gotten my fair share of shots to the...rear end." He shook his head. "The remotes have a sense of humor."

"Well, good to know that they can keep a guy on his toes." Zack reached back to grab his sword. "Mind if I join in?"

"Not at all," Ben said with a grin, giving the remotes a mental nudge and turning two of them back on. Four was pushing his limits and with another person to watch for as well, it was going to be a little too much.

"Bring it on!"

Zack set his feet apart, holding his sword in front of himself as he watched the two remotes, kind of wary.

He supposed be probably should have asked what to expect from them, as he'd never actually seen them at work before, but where was the fun in that?

"You're pretty good at that," Tahiri said afterward, having watched the whole thing.

"I've had a good teacher," Zack replied, smiling and giving her a nod. "I still have a long way to go, though. I'm not exactly a First Class, yet."

He offered her his hand for a shake. "I don't think we've met yet, I mean, aside from being in some of the same classes before. I'm Zack!"

Tahiri shifted her lightsaber hilt to her left hand, then reached out and took his hand -- hers was insanely small in comparison to most people's -- to give it a firm shake. "I've seen you at the Reserves, too. I'm Tahiri."

"Hey, Tahiri!" She'd have to excuse Zack. He was pretty much eternally giddy when it came to getting to talk to people he hadn't really spoken with before. "You've got a lightsaber too, huh?"

He gave her a little grin as he re-claimed his hand. "A guy could start to feel left out, working with steel all of the time."

"I'm one of the other Jedi Ben's probably mentioned by now." His cheerfulness was infectious, and Tahiri actually found herself smiling despite her mood. "Though if you don't want to feel left out, I could show you my gaderffii sometime."

It was totally not an innuendo, okay? Not that either of them was likely to realize if it was, probably . . .

Zack was pretty much notorious for being oblivious to innuendo by now, really. But the best way in the world to make him flail would be to point it out to him when it existed.

Always an adventure!

"I've gotta admit, I've never actually heard of that," he said, smiling sheepishly. "But then, the lightsaber was new to me, too. What... is it?"

Sadly, Tahiri was going to miss out on the flail, since it hadn't occurred to her either.

"It's a sort of fighting staff, made of metal, with blades on one end and a pointed club on the other," she explained, holding her hands out to demonstrate the approximate length. "It's the traditional weapon of the tribe that raised me. I learned how to fight with one when I was little."

It probably said a great deal about Zack's head for weapons that his reply was a whistle, and then, "Neeeeeeat."

And then bouncing. But that was a bit of a given, really.

"I'd love to see something like that in action sometime!"

Tahiri'd been planning on getting some practice in herself, which was why she had her own lightsaber in hand when she slipped into the salle. (She still didn't get the point of soccer. Lightsaber practice, on the other hand . . .)

She'd be content with just watching for a while, though.

Ben glanced up and smiled, then increased his pace a little.

Not showing off, really!

...much.

Sure he wasn't. Well, it got her to crack a smile at least.

At a break in the action, Tahiri called, "I do get to use the salle sometime today, right?"

"You've got to fight me for it," he declared cheekily.

[weetuskenraider]

She managed a reasonable approximation of her usual smile. "Oh, do I?"

Ben nodded solemnly. "And I cheat."

No, he didn't.

"We'll see about that." Tahiri took a step toward him. "Bet I could take you, Skywalker."

. . . probably not, no.

"Take me where?" Ben asked, taking a step toward her.
