The Valley Campfire: Monday Afternoon

Layla yawned and stretched as she exited her alcove after five days of being a leather bound set of encyclopedias. She still felt a bit fuzzy and stiff for some strange reason. It wasn't as if she had actually spent the week in bed but she still felt like she had.

Taking the opportunity to stretch her legs, Layla ambled into town to purchase some provisions from the Quik Stop. She returned to the campfire ring with a cooler of drinks and some tofu dogs for roasting as well as the goods for the actual s'mores.

After building a fire, she sat back with a cool beverage and started roasting a hot dog. After spending a week as a set of books, some fire roasted vegetable protein sounded pretty darn good.

"The only question I have," Elena mused, "is whether we should skim any off the top, for our trouble in setting it up."

See? This was why Elena shouldn't have the money. Not entirely trustworthy.

"Y-yo-you can keep it," Tara said. "I just got a job in town."

Which she was plenty proud of, yep.

"You did?" Elena's ears perked up. "Where? I've been thinking about getting a job, but I don't know where to look."

"Magic Box, in town. Mr. Winchester runs it. He asked me if I was interested and I told him I was."

She was so proud of herself on that.

"I don't think I saw it," Elena admitted. "Do they sell materia? No, wait, Reno said this world doesn't have any. Is it real magic?"

"Some of it is," Tara said. "Some of it is just ... y'know, it makes people feel better, and maybe it works some places."

"What's materia?"

"They look like marbles," Elena said, holding her thumb and fingers in the air to describe a circle. "You can use them to cast magic. Certain spells, depending on what you have."

"So some of the magic stock is ... following the placebo effect?" she asked

"I guess?" Tara said carefully. "Like ... crystals. Some of them do stuff, some of them just look pretty."

"If I come in during your shift," Elena asked, "will you tell me which are which? I don't want to get you in trouble, but I'd hate to buy the pretty variety if I wanted one of the ones that does something."

Tara bobbed her head. "Absolutely. I mean, there are different magics in different worlds, but ... I can try. I'm working Saturdays."

"Just so far as you know," Elena said easily. "I don't want you to have to do research or anything annoying like that. Just a heads-up if I'm picking up something that's a complete rip-off they sell to tourists."

Tara's smile was easy. "I w-wouldn't let my friends waste their money."

Elena flushed. "I didn't mean it like that," she said quickly. "I don't think you'd ... you know. Just that your boss might not like it if you're giving out company secrets."

In some lines of work, that got to be a big deal.

"I didn't mean to sound ... that way," Tara said. "I think Mr. WInchester would want me to help people, right?"

"Probably," Elena said, nodding in a rapid blur. "I ... mean, there's probably not a lot of ... deep dark secrets going on in your average ... retail shop, right?"

Most jobs were not her former job. Right, then.

Tara looked a little sketched out by that, truthfully. "N-n-n-not as far as I know."
