Leery's River Campfire [evening]

Sookie had decided to take advantage of the warm weather while they still had it, and had procured some marshmallows, chocolate and graham crackers, as well as some hot dogs and other assorted things that could be roasted over a fire.

She didn't have a whole lot of campfire-y experience, in general, but these were staples of her childhood and seemed like a good idea. Who didn't like chocolate, anyway?

...probably people who were allergic. And vampires, since they didn't eat people food. But still! Most people liked chocolate, anyways!

So Sookie perched herself beside the campfire with plenty of food for others should anyone choose to join her in roasting things over said fire. Her marshmallow was starting to look all nice and lightly tanned.

[open like a campfire is!]

Jack wandered over and went to steal a marshmallow, hand posed over the bag to ask permission. "Hi, Sookie," he grinned. "I don't see you nearly enough. How are you?"

"I'm good 'nough, Jack!" she said cheerfully, and waved a hand over the bag in question. "Please, help yourself. It's what they're here for, after all. How have you been?"

"Good," Jack answered brightly. He settled on a rock and started working a marshmallow onto a stick. "I'll be a little better when we're back in the dorms." Nope, still not a fan of the cabins, here. But he was dealing.

"Your, uh, the things you gave me are really helping my friend."

"Good evening," Zayne said, walking over to the campfire. "Is the food being shared or are you just taunting passersby with it?"

"Oh, I'm so glad to hear that," she said, blushing lightly. "You let me know if he needs a different...type, or anything like that, okay?" She turned her marshmallow, considering whether to ask, but decided to anyway. "You don't like the cabins?"

"In general, I was gonna share, but I might just taunt you with it," Sookie said, and waved her marshmallow at him.

"You're such a mean person," Zayne said, grinning as he took a seat. "But taunt away. I'll live."

"He doesn't love the taste, but it doesn't make him sick," Jack said, shrugging lightly. "We can stay with what we have."

No point fixing what wasn't broke, right?

The marshmallow went over the fire as he pondered his answer. "I'm not much for the outdoors, really. It's the bugs and the dirt. Do you like it?"

Jack waved a few fingers. "H'llo, Zayne. Have one of Sookie's marshmallows."

"It ain't so different from where I'm from, honestly," Sookie admitted. "The mosquitoes at home would eat us alive without thinkin' twice, and Bon Temps itself is real rural. I'm a country girl, no two ways about it, and I guess that's why the cabins aren't so hard on me. They got air-conditioning, even, and that's a luxury we don't got at home. But then, I suppose you don't either, being from so long ago."

Even after an entire summer term at the school, with all the food she could eat, Emma still couldn't quite repress the urge to eat what she could find.

"I hope that's for sharing," she announced, tilting her head to regard the people around the campfire. "I rather find myself with a craving for chocolate."

Sookie giggled, and tossed the bag over. "You might live, but a life without marshmallows is a life not worth living, I think."

"If it weren't, my figure'd be in a lot of trouble," Sookie remarked with a small smile. "Help yourself!"

"I never had a marshmallow until last week, actually," Zayne said as he took a couple and tossed the bag back. "So I'd argue with that, but just barely."

Jack shook his head, thinking Sookie's home sounded peaceful -- and like something he would hate. "We don't really need it, though. Isn't Louisiana terribly hot in summers?"

Jack ... would never exactly object to seeing Emma, no, so she got his best grin. "Come. Have a marshmallow to go with that chocolate."

"Thanks, Jack, but I shouldn't have too many," Zayne said. "More of these means more time in the gym."

"Really, darling, you'd need more than a few to be in trouble," Emma quipped as she took a seat. "The way they make us run up to the school for classes, you'd have to eat two bags worth before the calorie burn couldn't hold it off."

"And humid," she said with a nod. "But we're not the wealthiest folk, so we make due with fans and so forth. I like being out of doors, most of the time, 'cause at least that's free, and I've just always felt a real connection with nature, you know? Plus I tan like there's no tomorrow."

"Ah. Of course. I keep hoping they'll suddenly fuel a growth spurt for me," Jack smirked.

... look, if he couldn't make fun of his height, who could?

"How kind. Do I get a stick to put it on too, or do I have to risk my fingers?" she teased. "I don't want to end up well-done, just for a s'more."

Sookie had to grin at that. "That's a fair point. Plus I'm not really one to count calories, so that's a stretch even there. I'm not sure we've met -- I'm Sookie."

"Please tell me someone showed you what a s'more is," Sookie said, mildly horrified. "I keep finding out these Earth things that're new to you, and they're all things I grew up with. It's so strange."

"Last week at a campfire, yes," Zayne said. "It's even weirder when I find out that there's stuff here that I know, though. Like popcorn. I never would have guessed that you had it here."

She did; Jack gave himself a moment to admire her skin, feeling it had practically been encouraged. "You look comfortable," he observed. "Like ... some kind of blond wood sprite. You can probably tell I've spent most of my life indoors. City boy."
