Sookie had...kind of had a Day. Yes, with a capital D. And she was feeling helpless on top of exhausted -- she hadn't been sleeping well, on top of that Day-with-a-capital-D.

When she felt helpless, she did what she knew how to do: she cooked. She'd already decided she had to feed Karla, and that was of course going to get done if she had to throw the macaroni and cheese she was making (from scratch, thank you) at her friend. But it seemed wasteful, especially when it seemed like the vast majority of people were as much on edge as she was, and probably weren't eating well.

She dug out some fruit from the fridge, too, trying to keep things somewhat nutritional as she set the second batch of pasta to boil.

Karla and Warren had celebrated their return to their proper forms in the way that many teenagers would find appropriate: they'd headed back to the modern mainland, found a toy store, and bought a gaming system (or three). Along with the games they bought to go along with said system, they also picked up a few guitars, a keyboard, a drum set, and two microphones.

Once back in the rec room, the rest of the afternoon had been spent setting up the systems and buying every single song available for the game. Waiting for them to finish downloading actually took longer than the initial setting up, even taking in Karla's attempts to 'help'.

But now the system was set up, the songs were ready, and the instruments prepared.

Right, so. Bobby was clearly making up for lost campfire time by following Alex's example from the other day and dragging just about every sort of camping-related food out to the campfire. He may be somewhat hopeless in the kitchen (well, even that wasn't entirely true- he could make a passable cupcake so long as no fish or other disgusting ingredients snuck in) but he could roast a mean marshmallow, damnit.

It would be a shame to waste the fact that finally, it was warm and sunny out again. So of course Sookie was stretched out on a towel near her cabin, sunglasses and bikini on, drink and phone within reach.

She was still sort of waiting for something to go wrong -- a raincloud to appear exclusively above her head, or a cowboy would try to lasso her and carry her off, or something. But in the meantime, tanning and sending texts was her priority, because she only had so much time left to do that on-island.

So yesterday had been- well, weird didn't even cover it. And today? He'd managed to find the laundry room, at least, and lucky for him they didn't need quarters or whatever to operate, so now at least what little he owned was clean. There'd also been a real honest-to-god shower to be had, and so so far Toby was counting today as a win.

There was still a part of him quietly freaking out about the weird stuff everyone had told him about yesterday, but for now? Toby was content to eat some leftover pizza he'd snagged from the picnic and channel-surf.

After all the candy and sugary treats devoured when most of the island's inhabitants were transformed into children, Raven was very careful to provide a lot of healthy snacks for this meeting of the Reserves. There were fruits and veggies and whole grain goodness, but in the end she'd caved enough to provide some sweets as well.

"We are celebrating the end of the semester," Raven said to begin the meeting. "We have survived not only our classes, but everything that Fandom -- and our own worlds -- have had to throw at us. We thought we would take this time to take a break from the stress of finals and relax among friends, though perhaps we can also speak of what we have faced over the past several months and what we learned from it, about ourselves and our companions and our abilities."

"I think the most important thing I learned," Tara began, "and this might sound cheesy, is -- trust yourself and trust your friends. I've seen people do amazing things. Things they, they would have sworn they couldn't do if you'd asked. But stress people out enough, and bam. Magic happens. Not just literal magic, either."

"But there are always consequences to your actions," Karla added, sounding a little subdued. "And those consequences can have much further-reaching effects than what you might expect. Be careful of those around you, especially your friends. Just because they are likely to forgive you doesn't mean you have the right to treat them poorly, even for the sake of the 'greater good.'"

"Sometimes you owe your friends more than that," Dolf piped up. "Sometimes the 'greater good' is your friends, and sometimes you need to just look out for them to get the right things done." Not that he had any idea what Karla might have been referring to, but it had been his experience. "So we want to talk about it, and help make this part of the preserve a nicer place for today. Just to talk about the things we have done this year, and what they mean. Because everything means something, and everything we fight for is something important."

The boy was really ridiculously earnest.

"For my part, I have learned much the same as Tara has said," Raven said. "No matter how frightening something is, no matter how ashamed you are of something that is happening to you, you should not keep it to yourself and deal with it alone. The friendships forged in Fandom are strong, and our unique abilities and upbringings may bring valued insight into one another's problems. None of us are alone here."

She smiled and looked around at each of the students attending the meeting. "And if you have any words of advice for new students that will be arriving in Fandom, we would like to hear those as well."

Sookie was a little surprised this morning -- obviously, since the future-children had been to visit already, it wasn't going to happen again. But when she had woken up still seventeen (still prom queen!) and found Bobby decidedly...smaller, and younger by about ten years, she could've been knocked over by a feather.

That being said, it hadn't taken long for her to realize the only course of action. And so Sookie, in her pajamas (and Bobby, somehow in little-boy pajamas that featured penguins driving racecars) padded out to the common room to start making pancakes. Somewhere along the way, she'd added a few healthier foods to her plan, too, and had turned on some cartoons, but pancakes were definitely the endgame here.

It had worked for the other little kids, after all.

[COMMON ROOM IS OPEN YAY WEETINIES OMG]

Don't ask where she had gotten them, or how -- as a former Scout herself, Sookie had sources.

The important thing was that Monday night found Sookie camped out on the couch in the common room with her entire newly-acquired Girl Scout cookie collection as she channel-surfed. And while she was perfectly willing to share, visitors best be warned that her wrath would befall anyone who took the last of her Samoas.

Seriously.

It was definitely going to be one of those evenings. One of those weird ones. The sort that reminded unsuspecting passers-by that, in no uncertain terms, they were living on Fandom Island.

How did it manage such a thing?

Well, that there were two boys in the common room, exchanging gossip, probably wasn't all that new. That they were in their underwear, on the other hand, was probably an indication that things were a little off. One of the boys, the one who was wearing the world's most boring grey boxer shorts, was at least still wrapped in black leather from his nose down to his navel. The other, in white briefs, had his large white wings folded behind him.

Both of them were quite comfortable on the floor, surrounded by cushions from the couch, sparkly make-up, and girly teen magazines. Warren was painting his fingernails in a vivid shade of sparkly blue. Jono was hugging a pillow to his chest, reaching over occasionally to pet a bewildered kitten with a big pink bow around her neck, while reading off the questions to an 'Is He Really Into You' quiz to Warren.

By the end of the quiz, it became apparent that whoever 'he' was, they simply weren't as into Warren as he might have hoped, and with an indignant squeal of "Omigod! Not fair," the winged one capped his nail polish, reached for his pillow, bounced to his feet, and let Jonothon have it.

Oh, it was on.

[I totally blame [livejournal.com profile] glacial_witch and [livejournal.com profile] trigons_child for this one. The common room is open, for anyone who wants to either rescue the boys from this indignity, pull out a video camera, or join in the pillow fight!]

After so many requests for pancakes from her own children yesterday morning, Sookie figured that might be a theme for the weekend. And when she woke up, and Henry wasn't gone, at least, she'd run out to get a few supplies before returning to the common room to see what she could put together. (Though, of course, Henry had insisted on coming with her once he realized she was Going to the Store and he might Get Stuff.)

It clearly just wasn't her own children she was worried about, here, Drake/di Glacia/Stackhouse appetites aside. Sookie had bought enough things to make breakfast for pretty much any kids (and parents) who showed up. She was setting to work on the pancakes, but in other pans she was busily scrambling eggs and frying up some bacon. She'd also made a point to buy orange and apple juice and milk both chocolate and white, because there was no way in hell she was letting more of those kids just drink coffee. She didn't care if it was for a weekend, it was just irresponsible.

The student council weren't the only ones set up in the lobby today. Kappa Delta Gremlin had a table of their own, selling various baked goods made by the members of the sorority.

The roof was the traditional place for brooding, and so, after the walls of her room had finally gotten stifling, that was where Karla had fled. As much as she hated to admit it, the weather was a bit of a draw as well; she wanted to rail and curse and demand gray skies and rainy days to match her mood, but she couldn't deny how nice the sun felt. It couldn't really lift her spirits, but they might have been slightly lighter after she'd been sitting out for awhile.

Sookie had spent the better part of the morning ensuring that every balloon was filled, that the food -- thanks Kennedy -- was out, and that the ballpit was available for maximum...ballpittiness.

Shhh.

The cake had taken her awhile (though she'd ordered the penguins rather than made them herself) but overall, she was pretty pleased with it. And hopefully, the birthday boy would also be.

The Reserves were kind of fidgety today. Karla, at least, was filled with a kind of nervous energy that made it hard to keep still. This would be a nice break from her current state of constant near-exhaustion, if it hadn't come with all kinds of, well, emotional distractions. The kind that made it hard to concentrate.

Raven was worried about Karla after the text message she'd gotten late last night. As far as she knew, Karla had run off alone to Kaeleer, which didn't bode well. And fretting about Karla definitely wasn't helping with the issues she'd talked to Dinah about yesterday, so she decided to distract herself as only Monday nights could. Ice cream and Rumor Gal. Baby J was supposed to return tonight. There could be imminent rage...which wasn't very healthy either, but at least it wasn't worrying or moping.
[identity profile] justwantsquiet.livejournal.com
Sookie had had better, and less upsetting days. That afternoon, her brother had actually finally returned a phone call -- not to really check on his baby sister, though he did ask after her, but to tell her that he couldn't come to visit that weekend.

But that wasn't enough. Scarcely ten minutes after getting off the phone with Jason, just as the sun was going down, her phone buzzed with a text.

pam & i coming to visit. arrange accommodations. sleeping in the ground is hell on hair.

Because that was exactly what she needed. Eric and Pam, in Fandom. All weekend. Terrorizing her friends and teachers and people who could conceivably be either of those things, but now wouldn't, because some stupid vampires had ruined it.

Wonderful.

So Sookie was in the common room, whisking her second batch of banana pudding. She'd already poured the first batch over vanilla wafers, and admittedly, maybe she was whisking a little harder than necessary. She had some aggression to work out. But at least there was pudding coming out of it.

After a long day out fighting creepy zombie piranha fish, Karla had fought her way to the castle, beyond the goblin city to Pizza Planet, in the vague hopes that perhaps someone had decided to go in early and gotten stuck. Or something.

Much to Karla's surprise, Pizza Planet was actually open and mostly staffed. The denizens of Fandom were even more jaded by the invasions than the students, and apparently decided a paycheck was more important than the piranhas.

They hadn't been particularly happy to see her. Probably because it had been a very light day for them, work-wise.

But she'd shown up and hadn't moved until they completed her order and now Karla had a giant stack of pizzas to feed people along with a few two litres of soda and a giant salad. After a long day of fighting (or even not), she figured that fresh, hot food that didn't come from a microwave would be appreciated.

She was still debating turning on cheesy horror movies like she'd talked about with Ben, though. That might be a bit much after today.

Raven had claimed the fifth floor common room with a flag in the name of Rumor Gal tonight. She'd been waiting months for tonight's episode after the terrible cliffhanger earlier that year that had left her favorite character in grave peril.

She thought she'd figured out her laptop so that she could video chat with Hoshi if she called, and Jono had said he'd join her to watch, but anyone was welcomed, of course.

Just don't even think of turning the channel.

Sookie had Top Model on in the background as she whistled tunelessly in the kitchen. Idle hands had made her restless, and tonight found her making a dish of brownies to enjoy in front of the television. (With sprinkles!)

There was a certain irony to the evening, to baking something to eat while watching a show about the ultra-tall and thin, but Sookie didn't really care. Mostly she was giving herself something to do, and hoping that if the squeal of girls didn't draw people in, the smell of chocolate would.

"Thanks for coming," Karla said, once everyone had assembled and had a chance to grab something to eat and drink if they were so inclined. "So, those of us who were on the island a few weeks ago remember that great chunks of the island went missing before we were able to set everything aright--including most of the town and all of the restaurants. We were lucky that it didn't last long enough for there to be a food shortage--" in part because the cafeteria had remained, even if people would argue whether the cafeteria had anything that counted as edible in it "--but the point is there could have been. Considering most of us can be described as two-legged locusts, that would have been a serious problem."

"There are any number of reasons why we might get cut off from our usual supplies: an invasion, a trip that doesn't goes as planned, a bout of Fandom weird, whatever. But there are ways we can prepare without wringing our hands and bemoaning our fates: specifically, we can learn some basic skills to let us live off the land if such a thing ever happens. Hunting, gathering, knowledge of edible, medicinal and magical plants are all useful bits of knowledge to have and might serve to keep you and your friends alive should something unexpected happen."

It took Dolf a few seconds to realise the attention was now on him. It hadn't been more than a few weeks since the last time he'd had to speak before a large audience like this, and while they were vastly different people... he scraped his throat. "Hi, I'm Dolf," he started, "I'm here to lead Support Services from now on. Uh," and now that that was out of the way, he did feel a hint of nerves. Not so much because he didn't know where to go with this, but because he hadn't been here for all of these invasions, and he wasn't sure yet what to prepare for.

"...Like Karla said, it can be very important to know what you can eat," he segued, at last. "Some might already know what is good and what is not. Some might not. Meat is also important, so is hunting. If you are under attack, or have to come up with food yourself every day--" he struggled against the English language a little. "--it is important to know these things." He leaned down and picked some leaves off the ground. "This, you can eat, if you smash it enough," he said. "Other things can make tea. There is lots in the forest to be found if you're really hungry. Not just meat, but the plants. It takes work to recognize sometimes, but it's there."

He closed his mouth, exhausted with the language, but then opened it again to point at a few random plants around them. "Edible. Poison. Uh--" He blushed. "...don't try that."

Only then did he send a questioning look in someone else's direction. He'd completely forgotten about his nerves, and now he wondered if he'd said too much.

Tara didn't think he'd said too much, but it felt like time to step in. "And, um -- people who do magic can find supplies here, too." She knelt to pick a flower. "This one is in most protection spells. The bark of that tree helps find lost objects. And the red berries on that bush over there make a good base for love spells. Not that I think people should do love spells."

Karla shook her head at Tara's last comment and stepped forward again. "Yeah. Definitely avoid the love spells. But, no matter why you might find yourself out in a place like this, it's filled with things you can use to keep yourself fed, healthy, and stocked up on spells. So, today, we're going on a scavenger hunt in the Preserve. We've got some lists of common plants, herbs, and fungi that can be found in most similar areas. See what you can gather and harvest and bring it back to compare."

The second floor common room's kitchen had been transformed. Bowls filled with fruit, candy, chocolate pieces, and other various ingredients were strewn about the counter. Tiny bottles filled with lemon, vanilla, and peppermint extracts lined up like soldiers awaiting deployment. Every available surface in the fridge was filled with cartons of heavy cream and gallons of milk.

In the center of it all, whirring in self-important splendor, was the ice cream maker Ben had gotten for his birthday.

There were some streamers and balloons up, mostly because Karla was trying to remind everyone (or, at least, herself) that this was supposed to be a happy occasion.

Really. It was. At least, that's what everyone kept telling her.

The important thing to keep in mind was that there would (probably) be no repeat of her last sixth floor party sadly. She had gone the safe an glitter-free route this time. Clad in her new pajamas, Karla waited for her guests to arrive.

A rip opened in the middle of the dorms lobby-- but it was unlike any void the island had seen before. It didn't precisely shine, but white light did filter out, almost tentatively, like the rays of the morning sun. There was no real reason for Bobby to be eating his breakfast out by the campfire today, considering breakfast consisted of a bowl of chocolate Lucky Charms and a glass of Coke.

The fire definitely wasn't going, not this early in the morning anyway. But in case anyone else felt like partaking of his entirely healthful breakfast choices, he'd left the box of cereal out. There were also some more cans of the soda and, all right, fine, a carton of orange juice for those who wanted to pretend they could have a balanced breakfast that also included chocolate and marshmallows.

Tonight, while there was certainly food at the campfire, Sookie hadn't made it herself. At least in part due to her back still bothering her, and otherwise due to sheer mid-summer laziness, she'd just brought a bunch of moddable food back from the diner with her in the hopes of being able to attract people to a campfire without resorting to marshmallows and hot dogs.

Not that there was anything wrong with marshmallows or hot dogs, mind you.

She was amusing herself by toasting things that probably didn't normally need to be toasted. Maraschino cherries, it seemed, were not meant to be heated this way.

But. That was tomorrow. Tonight, she was perched in front of her campfire with a bunch of marshmallows, chocolate, and graham crackers, her legs stretched out in front of her. "Hi everyone," Tara said tentatively from her position next to the cold campfire. There would be enough sugar during the meeting, so the snacks on the nearby picnic table tended to fruits, cheese and chips, and there were blankets for people who wanted to sit on the ground. "It's been a while since we did this, so we're doing a little bit of a get-to-know-you game. People played it at another club meeting and it seemed to be fun for everybody."

Not dirty. No, really. Even if suggesting it kinda sounded that way would have made Tara blush a lot.

She held up a bag of Spree left over from the mural and explained, "We're going to go around the circle and everyone has to say their name and one fact about themselves. If it's true for you, too, raise your hand or make some noise and you get candy. H-hopefully by the end of the meeting everybody has a wicked sugar buzz and we all know each other a little better."

Karla grinned at the bag of sprees, knowing exactly where that came from. "Now, while it's really easy for everyone in this group to find things about themselves that are unique to them, that's not really what this game is about. We want to find things we have in common and also get that sugar buzz Tara mentioned."

"But if there is something you do not feel comfortable admitting to, you are not required to ask for the candy," Raven added. "This is all supposed to be for fun." She just may have seen how these games were sometimes played when alcohol was involved and the statements got...interesting.

"Fun and candy," Francine amended. "So if you feel you haven't got your full dose of sugar when it's all over, you're welcome to grab some more, even if the only thing you have in common with anybody else is liking candy."

Tara glanced around the circle. "If nobody has questions, let's start."

After Sookie had said goodbye to her grandmother, she was at a loss for what to do.

After a long moment's thought, she made her way back to the dorms, washed her face, and retrieved the product of what she and Gran had done early that day: three freshly-baked pies -- in apple, pecan, and strawberry -- from where she'd left them in her mini-fridge in her dorm room.

She took them out to the common room, curling up with the pecan one and thinking about the pie she'd rescued from Maxine Fortenberry, just like this one. To get her mind off of the day -- as best she could -- she turned on the television to provide at least some ambient noise. Not everyone on the island was sad. By mutual agreement, Karla and her parents decided not to talk about about what was going on in Glacia and why she was here at Fandom. They still wished to know and were biding their time; Karla had pretty much decided that telling them would be a waste of time. All they could do was feel bad about it.

Instead, they had spent the afternoon handwavily wandering around the island, with Karla pointing out fun places to hang out and explore. Her father was intrigued by all the modern technology and would have been happy to spend several hours in Karla's dorm, fiddling with the lightswitch, her ipod, and her laptop. Karla's mother, however, wanted to meet more of Karla's friends. Having been on the island for over a year now, Karla knew the best way to lure people into one place.

Several orders of takeout later, the sixth floor common room was filled with dishes from Il Pollo, the Lobster Hut, Ching Tai, and, of course, Pizza Planet. She couldn't let her parents come to Fandom and not try pizza!

Sookie was feeling restless. It was partially the dreams about Gran, partially the compulsion to go out to the woods, and partially something she couldn't quite place. She was resisting the urge to walk out through mulch to find things, though, so instead, she took to her common room to bake brownies.

Lots of brownies. Lots, and lots of brownies. Cookies had occurred to her, too, but she wanted heaping doses of chocolate, really. Some of the brownies had walnuts. Some of them had chocolate chips. Some even had little candies. But the batter itself didn't change, and she was able to distract herself by baking several dozen brownies.

Hopefully she'd be able to get someone else to eat some. Because even while slightly confused, Sookie couldn't eat 48 brownies herself.

Okay, so Bobby had been innocently flipping channels when he came across something so horrifying, so terrible, so traumatizing, that he just couldn't look away.

It was like a trainwreck. A trainwreck with vampires. That sparkled.

Yes, he'd stumbled upon a Dusk/Full Moon double header.

Armed with her share of the pavlova she and Jacob had made in class today, Sookie was camped in front of the television. Her conversation with Loki had cheered her up considerably, as had the reserves, so tonight she was combating the depression that threatened to set in via two very well-known techniques: sugar, and horribly, horribly inane horror/sci-fi movies on basic cable.

She wasn't exactly sure what was happening on the screen -- there seemed to be a large insect-person, but moments earlier there had also been a dinosaur, and there was scary music playing the whole while -- but it certainly was distracting. As was this awesome marshmallow thing they'd made, though she'd probably share some of it.

The usual table of baked goods and refreshments was available for the reserves meeting, with plenty of ice to keep the drinks cool in the heat of the afternoon. It was Raven's turn again to lead the meeting, and she was trying not to flail. She was never going to be used to public speaking. And yes, she'd changed clothes since leaving 'Dite's, thank you very much.

"Last year we had a discussion about recognizing when people were not themselves," she began, "but in light of this past Friday, and because we have many new people here now, I thought it would be acceptable to speak on this topic again." Without love spells this time, please.

"Fandom has many ways of affecting us," Raven went on, "and it is often said that the island has a whimsical sense of humor. People have spontaneously changed sex for a day, or turned into children or animals, or become another person entirely, or just...not been themselves. If you have not experienced these things yet, you likely soon will, or you will observe your friends being thus transformed. While it may be amusing to watch, if something has altered your friend's personality, it is advisable to keep an eye on them so they do not do something they will later regret." No, her eyes totally weren't darting toward Karla when she said that, and she definitely wasn't blushing.

"And -- if they're going to do it no matter what you say?" Tara put in with a blush of her own, thinking of her turn as a chanteuse, "Keep an eye on them, and be reassuring afterwards. Remind them it happens to everybody and not that many people saw whatever it is that they did. Unless it's physically dangerous. Then you have to stop them."

"I personally would consider mental scarring to fall into that category," Emmett added. Not blushing, just... looking mentally scarred. "And yet another afterwards option would be What Happens When Hell Freezes Over Stays In Hell, aka looking your friend straight in the eye, saying "I have no idea what you're talking about" and passing them an ice cream sundae."

Karla nodded. "And when it comes to dealing with the consequences of their--or your--actions, it's important to remember that people might literally have not been in their right minds. It may be hard to be forgiving or just in the aftermath, but, most times, people have no idea anything is happening or different until whatever weirdness has struck has ended. Until then, they are acting 'normal' by the standards of that new reality, and that new reality. You have to understand that whatever actions or behaviors they displayed during that time, they have very little to do with how the person thinks, feels, or acts normally, and take that into account when you decide how to respond in the aftermath."

"Do you have any abilities that might be useful in detecting if someone is not themselves, such as reading an aura and seeing it has changed?" Raven finished. "Or if their form has been entirely altered, would you be able to sense their true self? What could you do to restrain someone who is acting out of character?"

Bobby had spent most of the afternoon moving his stuff back to the dorms, but with that taken care of, he was just gonna relax and enjoy the last night of campfire-junk-food goodness... at least until the next session started up, anyway.

There were hotdogs (he'd even gone and found a package of vegetarian ones), s'mores fixings, sodas, chips, and yes, of course, Twinkies. The roasting experiment had worked so well last time that he was going to repeat it.

Rilla wasn't much for sunlight or nature or any of that crap, but sitting by the firepit at lunch was a good way to get a look at the cute boys that wandered through camp.

The dress she was wearing wasn't exactly cut out for lounging on logs, for God's sake, so she took a drag on her cigarette and hoped that someone would come along to make this whole exercise worth it.

[OOC: she haaaaates me.]

Just because he had a fondness for ice didn't mean Bobby hated things like campfires. Because campfires? Meant junk food. And Bobby Drake was always up for junk food.

So there was a cooler of (amazingly) cold sodas to one side, and a good sized pile of various junk foods as well.

Currently, Bobby was experimenting with roasting a Twinkie on a stick, but there were definitely the more traditional s'mores fixings to be found as well.

Despite the disturbing phone call from her brother that morning, Sookie hadn't forgotten her promise to Tim. So the afternoon found her heading up to the school to wait for him, already thinking back on the tricks she'd learned from the other telepaths on the island, and just from her own experience. She suspected that Tara's little 'lalala you can't hear me' trick might be a hit, honestly.

It was all a good distraction from the morning, honestly, even as she dug out some Oreos and sodas from the cabinets while she waited. Not that she was hungry, but it was in her nature to be a good hostess, okay.

[Sookie's here for Tim, but it's an open common room, if you have reason to be up there!]

Harpy Campfire [evening]

By the time evening rolled around, Sookie figured she either was safe from Kennedy's wrath, or she could ply her with marshmallows.

Besides, she was hungry. So she wandered outside with marshmallows and hot dogs, building a little fire, and hoping to attract company that wouldn't kill her or anything.

She also brought her pie out from her baking class, because there was no way she could eat an entire strawberry pie herself.

...no matter how much she wanted to.

[yes, I've played the hell out of her today. Shh, I only get so many more happy Sookie days. OPEN LIKE A CAMPFIRE YAY.]

There were two tables at the front of the meeting today. The first held the requisite snacks and drinks that people expected from their meetings, but the second was covered in skeins of silk, hollow wooden frames, a few small baskets of dried plants, some salt, candles, incense, and a few books.

"Kiss kiss and thanks for coming," Karla greeted when it looked like everyone had assembled. "In the past, we've talked about the different kinds of magic there are. My Craft differs from Tara's magic which differs from Raven's powers. But even a single witch or magic user may need many tools to cast the spells they know. Some spells can be accomplished with a thought or by will alone, others may need somatic and verbal components to be spoken aloud or specific hand gestures. And others still need materials. Again, because there are so many different kinds of magic, what materials are needed for a spell or ritual will vary from person to person and spell to spell--" she gestured to the second table "--but oftentimes, there is a bit of overlap."

"At home," Tara added, "you need ingredients for just about any spell, unless you, um, kind of go overboard with power. But that'll just drain you. And besides" -- she shrugged -- "most burning herbs smell kind of pretty. Helps you focus while you're chanting."

"Incense and candles also are sometimes a helpful aid for meditation," Raven said, "which can aid in focusing your powers, as can something like my chakra." She touched her fingertips to the red jewel on her forehead, then continued. "My healing gifts do not require any sort of spell components, but other spells I know do need some sort of object to focus them on, an item for the magics to be contained within." She swept her hair back so that the glow of her earrings could be seen. "These were originally simple gold earrings, but I have attached a spell of light to them. For the spell to be most effective, they had to be of pure gold and finely crafted. The better the quality of the item, the more powerful the spell."

"It's important to learn and understand some basic spell components," Karla continued. "On the one hand, if we're under attack and need to cast a spell, knowing what items are at hand will give you a better idea of what spells can be cast. Knowing the difference between rosemary and rue might be vital, especially if the magic user casting the spell can't be with you when you're collecting the materials for the spell. And, should you ever be in a position to observe an enemy spellcaster, it's good to know a little bit about what they're doing, too. Will knocking the candle over interrupt the spell or just alert the caster to your presence? If you scuff the summoning circle, will you send the evil demon back to its hell dimension or just let it loose on Fandom?"

These were some pretty important questions, okay? No one wanted to deal with ravening demons on the loose.

"So today, we're going to spend some time talking about some of the material components to our spells. Then, we're going to talk about where to find those components and the best ways to interfere with spells that rely on them."

"They kept telling me I'm not allowed to say that you'd find the stuff I use to make magic at 'Dite's," Emmett added with a grin. "So this is me not saying that, and just shutting up and listening this week."

Tim had eaten, of course, once he and Jason got back this morning from their still being played impromptu camping trip, but he still felt like he hadn't had a good meal in days. So he was down at the main firepit with hot dogs and buns. He'd built up a small fire and was roasting a hot dog on a stick.

Okay, so today had admittedly not been the most productive day that Zack had ever had. He'd skipped work today after having the meaning of Memorial Day explained to him by the gym teacher, and then he'd handwavily headed down to the graveyard. Angeal wasn't there, no, but it was about as close as he was going to get, and the time to just sit quietly and pay his respects had been good for him.

Now, to wrap the day up, he'd grabbed some marshmallows, bars of chocolate, and graham crackers, and he was working on getting a decently sized fire going.

Okay, so Zack's idea of a 'decently sized' fire was possibly not what most sane people considered to be one. He'd heaped the logs on kind of ridiculously high, and then he'd lit that sucker with a Fira spell. The result had singed his eyebrows a little at first, but hey, all the better for making s'mores, right?

... Once he blew out the marshmallow fire.

Unlike some people, Kennedy wasn't feeling particularly burdened today; actually, the single oversized external-frame backpack that had just materialized on her morning run, while heavy, had made for a satisfyingly challenging workout. The part where getting rid of it wasn't happening... eh, that was mildly inconvenient, but she could deal. She'd just hope it went away in the morning, and do double time in the gym when it did.

In the meantime? If anybody needed her tonight she'd be the one trying to make the most of this whole roughing-it experience, sitting on a log beside the fire with the usual campfire foods, a huge box of takeout from Ching Tai (please, she wasn't roasting her own dinner but if anyone wanted to they could go for it), and her boots propped up on a very lumpy backpack labeled Just Wants to be the Slayer, Dammit.

Just ignore the little toiletries case beside it that read Man, Getting Burned by a Straight Girl Kinda Sucked. Hey, she was ignoring it too.

Peter didn't particularly want to gather a crowd, but making a campfire and tossing black snakes and firecrackers at it seemed particularly amusing today.

So yeah, there was definitely a bit of noise. Peter wasn't a blossoming pyro or anything, he was just a bored teenager. Anyone was definitely welcome to join him. He might even have some moddable extra bits of fireworks.

Sookie loved summer. And while it wasn't really summer yet, it was close enough.

The one thing that she didn't really love about summer was the cabins. It wasn't that she didn't enjoy being around her classmates in close quarters. It was that there were certain disadvantages to her telepathy, and those were amplified in close proximity. There were certain members of her cabin in particular who were -- ahem, very loud broadcasters, so it was little wonder that only the second night of being in the cabins found Sookie outside at the main campfire, having taken some preventative ibuprofen.

Granted, there was some niceness to being outside, too -- she loved being outdoors, and even if it was a bit brisk, that only meant that the fire wasn't oppressive. So she got a bunch of hot dogs and marshmallows and IDK other things you can roast on a stick, mod away and set up at the main campfire, hoping to draw in some company that she could at least block out more effectively out here.

[bored. entertain meeeee.]

Ender had told him about television when he'd been trying to explain the computer and holograms: light that was shaped into things. Hiccup hadn't actually made the connection between the box he'd seen in the common room and television until he'd come wandering in search of food and seen the pictures playing across the glass.

Quest for food forgotten, he dropped to his knees in front of it, eyes wide, one hand on the glass. There were people and animals and machines and some sort of magical liquid that promised to make him irresistible to girls if he sprayed it all over himself. There was even a man on a horse.

Enraptured, Hiccup just kept staring, eyes about six inches from the screen.

Tonight was the season finale of Rumor Gal, so of course Raven had commandeered the common room to watch it. It was going to be the perfect distraction from her father and Sebastian and strange boys on roofs telling her she was going to turn evil.

Unless the characters' actions got her all riled up. That could be a problem.

So... Bobby had never been up to the sixth floor except for parties and that one disastrous baking attempt with Sookie. Today, though, he was bored and wandering and... wondering where that random, unmarked door led.

The answer was, apparently, to a hallway with more doors. Bobby then opened one of those doors and...

"Whoa."

Bobby made a few calls, because holy crap this was way too awesome to keep to himself, and then settled in to wait for people to arrive.

[ooc: YES. RETURN OF THE SIXTH FLOOR ADVENTURES. Bobby called a whole bunch of people, and in his excitement probably called more than a few random numbers, if your character doesn't know him but would like an excuse to come play. MINOR OCD ONNAWAY UP.]
