Magical Reserve - Preserve Next to The Cabins, Wednesday

With tea and biscuits--oh hush, he was a proper Irish English boy--ready for members and guests, Merlin was cheerfully waiting for everyone to arrive.

"Hello! Today, Karla and I have a bit of a new exercise for us all to try today," He informed everyone with a sort of manic cheer that came from hoping to god this ended well.

Karla stepped forward with the blithe carelessness that came from having no clue that anything could possibly go wrong with her plan. "Kiss kiss everyone. So, more than anything else, there needs to be trust between us as a group. Without it, we'll be disorganized, inefficient, and the other members of the Reserves won't trust us, either. Which, in a crisis, could lead to disaster. So, I thought today we could focus on building that trust together. And for that we have--" she paused for a moment to let the anticipation build "--magical trustfalls!" She beamed at them, certain they'd be as enthusiatic as she was about the idea.

"Yay!" Merlin offered with a strangled little cheer. "Karla and I will demonstrate."

Or something.

"Karla?"

"That's right!" Karla said, giving Merlin a reassuring smile. One that had a lot of teeth in it. She practically skipped around behind him. "In case you're not sure what a trustfall is, Merlin is going to close his eyes and fall backwards, expecting me to catch him before he hits the ground. I'm going to do so, but only with magic." She clasped her arms behind her back. "Ready Merlin?" she chirped. "You trust me, right?"

It wasn't reassuring at all! But he nodded dutifully and closed his eyes. "Of course."

Really.

Taking a breath, he fell backwards.

Karla took the easiest path. Using Craft, she solidified the air behind him, the same way she would if she were airwalking. Merlin hadn't tipped back more than a few inches before the air caught him. "Now, there are a ton of different things I could have done. I could have called in a big pile of soft things for him to land on, or put a shield behind him, or just floated something over to catch him."

Merlin blinked a few times and looked around at the nothing holding him up. "Whatever it is you believe might work best. And if you don't think you can use magic, your hands are perfectly fine."

"Or if you think your magic isn't suitable, you can always brainstorm with a partner about ways you could possibly make it suitable," Karla added. "I've found that a lot of working with magic involves improvising." She looked over and gave Merlin her best unsure-but-game grin. "My turn now?"

Merlin nodded and waved toward the rest of the group. "Pair off and get started then!"

"I don't know if I can do this," Tara cautioned the tall girl standing near her. "Sh-should we try?"

"Sure!" Dinah smiled at the new girl, and said, "I'm Dinah. I've got telekinesis, not magic, but I've been practicing over a year now. I saw you here last week, right?" She grinned. "Want me to go first, falling?"

"Yep, I'm Tara," Tara said with a tiny smile. "And ... would it be okay if I fell first? I want to see how it feels before I try anything."

She added, "I'm a witch, but I'll have to use telekinesis to do this. You're just, um, bigger than a pencil."

Dinah laughed, and said, "Just a bit bigger. And no worries, I can catch you, I pick up Tahiri and move her around all the time." She got into position, smile peeking out. "Whenever you're ready."

Tara laughed too, and that made this that much easier. "Then here goes nothing." Closing her eyes, she let herself drop toward Dinah's telekinetic grasp

... hopefully toward Dinah's grasp. If not, ow?

Dinah's TK snapped out as fast as she could, and she caught Tara at a 45 degree angle, concentrating her telekinetic grip around her waist, then shifting it up to her shoulders, so she wouldn't end up arching backward. "There!" She grinned. "I can push you back up like this, or with my hand...?" Whichever was less weird.

"Hand," Tara meeped. "And fast."

Floating was weird.

Dinah grabbed her by the shoulders and lifted her on her own, letting go of the telekinesis, then checked, "Are you okay? I didn't jostle you too much, did I?"

Yeaaah, she'd forgotten Tahiri was always expecting this, and had Force senses too.

"No, it was just ... very weird," Tara said, stepping to her feet. Her hand went to the back of her head. "Like being caught by the invisible man. But, um, not bad."

Her smile was weak but reassuring.

"I can try but we should probably be over a pile of leaves or something."

"Whew. Glad I didn't freak you out," Dinah said, her smile relaxing an increment. "And I do falls all the time, but yeah, mats are better than hard ground." She looked around for some leaves to pile together, and while she was grabbing a few, she asked, "So what class are you? And where-when are you from?"

"I'm going to be a sophomore," Tara said, helping to pile up the leaves. "And, um, now. It's this tiny little place in California. Still weird people ask that that way. You?"

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 06:16 pm (UTC)(link)
"Senior in the fall," Dinah said, piling up a few more leaves, and using her TK to sweep a few stragglers into the pile, then brushing off her hands. "And I'm from New Gotham, New Jersey, and right now." She grinned. "I know, it's weird, but even the people you wouldn't think are from some-when else could just be from, like, the 1970's. My friend Cal is, he's building churches in Turkey this summer." She shrugged. "And my roomie is from two years ago. I don't get it at all."
life_inshadow: ([neu] I'm talking to you)

Re: Trustfalls!

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2009-07-15 06:24 pm (UTC)(link)
"I've never heard of New Gotham," Tara admitted. "But wow, that would be a lot to adjust to, even if it was just, like, two or three years. I'm glad I didn't get displaced that way."

She took a place across the leaves from Dinah, adjusting herself to catch. "Ready when you are."

Re: Trustfalls!

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 06:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Dinah grinned, braced herself, and closed her eyes. This would be ouchy if Tara missed, but not *too* bad. "Okay. Ready!"

She fell back, fighting the urge to stumble or put out her arms, thinking, now now now...

Re: Trustfalls!

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2009-07-15 07:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Now Now Now....

Tara concentrated as hard as she could on telekinetically catching the top half of Dinah's body, simultaneously uttering a short spell that should slow and soften the fall. She also had her hands out in case both of those measures failed.

She believed in being prepared.

"Eeep!" Dinah felt herself slow first, then be caught, her body at an angle to the ground, her heels digging into the soil. "Oh, you were not kidding, that is so weird." She tilted her head back to laugh up at Tara. "Can you push me back with magic? Or is that a separate thing?"

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2009-07-15 07:14 pm (UTC)(link)
"I can try?" Tara offered, then gingerly pushed forward with her mind. She kept a hand at the small of Dinah's back -- not touching, just guiding. "How do you feel?"

Re: Trustfalls!

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 07:19 pm (UTC)(link)
"Fine! Not even dizzy from that. But yeah, it's like--" Dinah tried to figure out how to describe it, then waved at the ground. "I could feel the gravity still worked? But without anything touching me, my body was all confused about why it wasn't still falling." She grinned. "You're good at that, though, it was really smooth, I didn't feel a jerk or bump."

Re: Trustfalls!

[personal profile] life_inshadow 2009-07-15 07:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Tara flushed. "I really didn't want you to fall," she said. "So ... I guess we trusted each other?"

Re: Trustfalls!

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-07-15 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
"Go us!" Dinah said, pleased, and offered the other girl a high-five. Trusting someone to want to catch you was as important as their ability to do so, really.
