Third Floor Common Room, Saturday Afternoon

Kate had come out of hiding.

After several days of staying firmly in her own room, she was now in the common room, lounging on one of the couches. She was reading an old magazine and eating popcorn from a big bowl.

The magazine was fascinating enough, but she kept looking up towards the door and wondering whether she should go down the hall to knock on a random person’s door and drag them back to keep her company.

Joan nodded. "It sure does. So does ice cream. And chocolate."

Pretty much anything a high sugar content, really.

"Really, they're so essential to things being okay, that they should provide them to us for free."

"They do feed us a lot around here," she said. "Which reminds me, there should be another welcome picnic in a few weeks. Those always have the best food."

"Oh, I remember mine!" As you should, Kate, it was just a month ago. "I pretty much set up camp at the ice cream table."

"The only downside is that there are sooooo many people," Joan said.

"I know. It's a bit much. But luckily it's not mandatory to meet everyone during the picnic."

Joan got a horrified look at the prospect of doing that. "Oh, thank goodness, no."

Kate laughed. "I talked to maybe six people at my newbie picnic."

"I really don't remember mine," Joan admitted.

"Has it been that long, or did you go into a worse shock than I did?"

"Just about a year," she said. "And it definitely took me some time to adjust to this place."

And determine that she hadn't gone completely off her rocker.

"They pretty much seem to give a new meaning to 'adjusting', here," Kate sighed.

"Man, I wonder how many times this same conversation has been had on this island?"

Joan chuckled. "Probably pretty often."

"I know I have had it like a gazillion times since I came here, and I've been here only a month," Kate snorted. "I think it's part of the Fandom experience."

"It's an experience you wouldn't get anywhere else, that's for sure," Joan said.

"There's no need to mention anything about how it's not necessarily an experience you wanted to have in the first place," Kate noted, attempting a grin.

Yeah, she had wandered a little too close to subjects that should be avoided.

"Yeeeeah, there is certainly never a dull moment around here."

"I don't know, Wednesday morning was kinda on the slow side?"

Joan laughed. "Well, it can't be 24/7 insanity or we'd all crack."

Kate winced. Just a little. But she covered it up fairly smoothly. "I know. Then it wouldn't be about whether someone's gonna crack, but when. Who can keep their sanity intact for the longest amount of time after arriving in Fandom?"

"Pretty much, yeah," Joan said. She noticed Kate wincing but decided not to ask.

"For all we know, the whole island could just be one big psychological experiment."

That had never occurred to Joan. "Huh. Never thought of that."

"I think not thinking about it any further would probably be a good idea," Kate smirked. "We'll go all paranoid. Which is exactly what they want to happen."

"Right," Joan said. "And that way lies straightjackets and craft hours."
