Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

Beyond the rapidly-healing scratch on his left arm, Arthur looked downright sprightly today, for whatever measure of the phrase. He rubbed his gloves together as the reservists arrived, and didn't stop until everyone was there. "Two weeks ago, we spoke about guerilla tactics," he said, "I hope you've remembered some of it. Today, we'll be focusing on the stealth, rather than the immediate location of the ambush. We must find ways to render ourselves completely inaudible when need be, both through the use of tools, and our own skills."

He considered the group. "If any of you - including those of you affiliated with the other groups rather than this one - know of any tools at your own disposal that will minimize our own noise, especially in forestal environments or cobblestoned roads or the like, please share those with everyone so that we will know what options we've got if the time comes."

"As for the skills, a bit of hands-on practice might be needed." He nodded towards the preserve. "A while ago, we hid and sought each other out in the woods. Now, I propose something similar, but different. Form up pairs. One of you will venture deep into the forest, and then attempt to return here--" He leaned back to pat a particular spot on the dorm wall, "Without being spotted. You may draft others onto your team, if need me. The other must, at the very least, fully discern the location of the first, and whether or not they're alone-- and if possible, catch them."

He crossed his arms. "Remember that the movement of our troops and their numbers alone is valuable information in the hands of the enemy," he finished, "So it's key that you make sure you are not seen, nor heard enough to find."

Terrifying. "Awesome! We did this before, want me to be the one hiding this time, and you trying to track me?" Dinah bounced, grinning.

This would end so well.

"Don't underestimate me," Gabrielle warned cheerfully. "Everything I know about tracking I learned from Xena."

Quit the namedropping, Gabrielle; it doesn't have the same effect in Fandom.

"Who's maybe a secret Jedi," Dinah teased with a grin. "Okay, if I could figure out how to mess with the Force, I would, but I'll have to settle for losing you in the underbrush somewhere." Or maybe the trees! 'Cause that worked out great last time.

Mindblowingly well!

"She's still holding out on me on that detail," Gabrielle said, scowling just a touch. "But I'll shake the answer out of her somehow."

No she wouldn't.

"Okay, so you head into the woods? How much of a head start do you want?"

"Give me-- one minute?" Dinah bargained, grinning. "And no peeking!"

"No peeking, I promise!" Gabrielle replied, and even braced her forearm against a tree trunk and buried her face against it to prove it.

. . . hide and seek was a timeless game, okay?

Ignore the minor detail of how you'd think she shouldn't be able to gauge one minute.

Pffft. It was the very special Greece. Xena probably invented timekeeping, too.

Dinah ran as fast as she could, chanting off forty seconds under her breath-- then slipped out of her shoes, and concentrating for all she was worth, started to air-walk.

No footprints. No scent. No crushed undergrowth. She didn't know how good a tracker Gabrielle was, but hopefully this would throw her a bit, even if it meant she was going slower right now.

Dinah made her way to an outcropping of rocks and hopped up on one, then hid behind them.

It was closer to two minutes after Dinah took off before Gabrielle came after her -- she'd been counting slowly. Following the trail was easy enough at first, if Dinah had been running; Gabrielle had enough practice at it by now.

She paused when she saw the shoes. "Huh. Clever, Dinah. But not clever enough!"

So she said. Until she realized there weren't any tracks from this point on out, and now, peering up into the trees, she was wondering if Dinah was secretly an Amazon . . .

Dinah was always the kid who only lost this game when she giggled. Which was why she had both hands over her mouth to silence her snickers right now.

She resisted peeking over the rocks when she heard Gabrielle talking; she just had to get past her and run back now.... Okay, easier said then done, but come on, Gabrielle, just move out of the way?

Gabrielle could be a pain even when she didn't realize it; she stood there for a good half minute, at least, arms crossed over her chest and a thoughtful, narrow-eyed expression on her face. Xena pulled this kind of trick all the time, going up where she couldn't leave tracks. It was just a matter of figuring out where, and none of the nearby trees seemed to have any telltale new damage to their bark.

Gabrielle's gaze eventually drifted toward the rock outcropping, and she grinned speculatively as she headed toward it. "Hmm."

Uh-ohhhhh. Dinah could hear Gabrielle approaching, footsteps, and she crouched down further, getting ready to run...

Then burst from cover, giggling already, and zig-zagging as much as she could, trying to rush past her.

"I knew it!" Gabrielle yelled, darting after Dinah. No, she hadn't. But it had been a good guess.

Gabrielle, however, did not have the stride length advantage here, and ended up having to give chase.

"Gotta catch me!" Dinah zigged again, laughing, then reached out with her TK to stir up leaves and grass behind her to hopefully slow down Gabrielle.

Oh, hey, her shoes!

Zag!

"Hey hey hey hey hey!" Gabrielle yelled, although the last couple of 'hey's were somewhat muffled by a large leaf to the face. Flailing a bit, she made a dive for Dinah's shoes. Maybe that'd slow her down!

"Hey!" Dinah yelled back, as Gabrielle got her shoes. "No fair!" She tried to drag them to her using her TK, even though Gabrielle had them already.

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
"Gotcha!" Gabrielle crowed, waving the shoes (she had to get a two-handed grip on them, how fair was that?) and scrambling back to her feet. This was not so easy when there was a TK pull to contend with . . .

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Another TK yank, much harder this time, and if Gabrielle didn't keep a hold of those, they were going to go flying away-- of course, if she, she might find herself dragged toward Dinah. Whoops!

Re: Play Modified Hide And Seek

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Aaaaaaaaaaaand there went Gabrielle, leaving a painfully obvious trail in the dirt from where her feet were dragging through the groundcover. But if you thought she was letting go of those shoes now, you were wrong.

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:28 pm (UTC)(link)
As the mun dies at that icon. Dinah quit dragging her after half a minute when it was clear those shoes were not going to be abandoned, and started laughing, then pointed at Gabrielle, yelling, "I'm getting those shoes back!" And started chasing her. She may have forgotten the point of the game here.

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:34 pm (UTC)(link)
"Come and get them!" yelled Gabrielle, who was cheerfully conscious of the fact that she'd already won the round, and was now just going to make Dinah run alllllllllllllll the way back to the dorms. Mwahahahaha.

Because, you know, she was such a runner. And she hadn't even met Pheidippides yet.

Re: Play Modified Hide And Seek

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Ooo, that was a mistake. Dinah was hot on her heels within minutes, reaching out for Gabrielle. "My SHOOOES!" she yelled. "Give 'em!" Tug, tug, yank yank, hard to do right while running but still fun to try. "Gabrielle!! Gonna GET YOU!"

Re: Play Modified Hide And Seek

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
"We'll just see about that!" Gabrielle called back, and Tahiri was probably facepalming and muttering something about how she'd been right. If she yanked any harder in the shoe tug-of-war, she was going to go tumbling head over heels.

Re: Play Modified Hide And Seek

[identity profile] blondecanary.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Or Dinah might give up on the TK and just do a flying tackle. Wooo! Shoes!

Re: Play Modified Hide And Seek

[identity profile] ancientbschamp.livejournal.com 2009-08-18 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Either way, the end result was Gabrielle hitting the ground with a pronounced "Oof!"

Not that this would prevent her from holding a finger up and announcing, "You didn't make it without being caught. I win!"

Dinah had her shoes back, but paused to bargain, "Two out of three!"
