Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

Beyond the rapidly-healing scratch on his left arm, Arthur looked downright sprightly today, for whatever measure of the phrase. He rubbed his gloves together as the reservists arrived, and didn't stop until everyone was there. "Two weeks ago, we spoke about guerilla tactics," he said, "I hope you've remembered some of it. Today, we'll be focusing on the stealth, rather than the immediate location of the ambush. We must find ways to render ourselves completely inaudible when need be, both through the use of tools, and our own skills."

He considered the group. "If any of you - including those of you affiliated with the other groups rather than this one - know of any tools at your own disposal that will minimize our own noise, especially in forestal environments or cobblestoned roads or the like, please share those with everyone so that we will know what options we've got if the time comes."

"As for the skills, a bit of hands-on practice might be needed." He nodded towards the preserve. "A while ago, we hid and sought each other out in the woods. Now, I propose something similar, but different. Form up pairs. One of you will venture deep into the forest, and then attempt to return here--" He leaned back to pat a particular spot on the dorm wall, "Without being spotted. You may draft others onto your team, if need me. The other must, at the very least, fully discern the location of the first, and whether or not they're alone-- and if possible, catch them."

He crossed his arms. "Remember that the movement of our troops and their numbers alone is valuable information in the hands of the enemy," he finished, "So it's key that you make sure you are not seen, nor heard enough to find."

"Not if you ask Master Skywalker," Tahiri said wryly. "He thinks we're all way too young for it. Maybe we are. I don't know. After everything that happened, I don't know if Jaina and I or any of our friends would have really known how to just be kids any more, anyway. And no getting drunk. At least, none of us did . . . as far as I know. I learned my lesson about getting drunk after Ben and I woke up in the stables after that party of Merlin's," she added with a sheepish look.

"If you're going to fight in a war-- which sucks, I still think that-- then you should at least get the officer rank or title for it." Dinah snickered. "Really? The one in May, that I missed? Awwwww. Do you even know how you wound up in the stables?" she teased.

"Not a clue." A little pink had progressed to noticeably red now. "I don't remember any of that part."

Tahiri shrugged, seemingly unaware of how cynical it must have sounded when she said, "Of course it sucks void. But that just seems to be the way we do things in my galaxy." Nothing like trying to find a way to end this war, knowing there'd be another one in twelve years or so. Whee.

"I am now reminded of the other reason I don't drink at those parties any more," Dinah said, not quite letting her off the hook. She made a face, and then sighed. "I'm sorry the politicians aren't doing their job well enough that you don't have to do it for them, though. And that they're so desperate for soldiers they need everyone to participate."

Tahiri shook her head. "We volunteered. You know . . . it's complicated. More complicated than you probably want to know about. It's just -- this is what I do. It's what I have to do."

Dinah thought of home, and crimefighting. "No, I do get it. If you feel that strong about it, choice isn't the question." She tilted her head. "I just wish it was easier on you guys. You know?"

"What's easy?" Every now and then the cynicism slipped out, and Tahiri couldn't pinpoint exactly when that had started. "I'm not sure I believe in easy any more."

"So, if the war were to stop tomorrow, would you even know what to do with yourself?" Dinah wondered, then tilted her head. "Then again, always work for a Jedi, I guess."

"If the war were to stop tomorrow --" A wry smile again; nice as that idea sounded, it was impossible. "I suspect we'd be sent out to different systems to help the recovery efforts. Mediators would probably be needed in some places, to help rebuild local governments. If the war stopped tomorrow, we'd still have our hands full for years to come."

"Less dangerous. Well, in theory," Dinah admitted. "Maybe more boring? They wouldn't send you back to Jedi school at this point, though, I guess. But hey, as long as you're good with that..."

"Depends where you got sent," Tahiri mused. "It could be more dangerous, or excruciatingly dull. Even if there isn't a war going on, there's always a million little conflicts."

"How old would you usually be, before they let you do that stuff?" Dinah wondered. "Or didn't you tell me you'd still be traveling around with a Master?"

"I'm not sure we do things by the book any more." Tahiri fiddled with the button on her left sleeve cuff, absently. "Especially after how many Jedi we've lost."

"Yeah. No point in wondering, I guess." Dinah shook her head, thinking about that. "Anyway. Barefoot Commander." She grinned. "I'm glad you're back."

"Thanks." Tahiri gave her a self-conscious smile. "You too. And in one piece, no limbs missing."

It was sad that she worried about that on a regular basis.

No limbs were threatened in the capture of those demons.

"I got choked, for a minute or so." See, now there was something the GFFA had plenty of! "And Tony got his collarbone broken. But he can heal himself now." She made a face. "With a lot of agonized screaming, yeesh."

"Is the screaming necessary?" Tahiri wondered, shooting a sympathetic look at Dinah over the choking which, yes, did happen a lot, but thankfully most of the time it wasn't Force-choking. That, you'd have to worry about a lot more.

"If I understand it right, he does something like several weeks worth of healing in only a few minutes, so it's not necessary but incredibly unavoidable when he's experiencing all the pain of those weeks in that time too." Dinah looked a little nauseated. "Which is why I'm all for him not getting hurt in the first place."

"Forcing it to accelerate," Tahiri guessed, going a little green at the thought. "That's . . . different." She'd gotten better at healing trances on her trip home, having spent enough time talking over the concept with other Jedi over those post-training dinners as well as learning to use them more effectively when sleep just wasn't an option. She wasn't sure she liked how that technique sounded; it seemed a little close to the dark side from her perspective.

"I could definitely get behind avoiding injury for that."

If the Dark Side made people pass out, Dinah was way against it.

"Yeeeah. His other abilities have gotten better too. Well, they had to, this summer. The only wizard in Vancouver, and stuff kept happening." Dinah sighed. "He'll be back in a week or so. I'll be way happier then. He never got hurt here, even with zombies and alligators."

"You have to learn, in those situations." Boy, did she know that all too well now. "The only one, really?"

"Yeah. There was another one there, before he figured out he knew magic. But she left for her home dimension. He hasn't met anyone else there who can do stuff. Although his ex-boyfriend knows about it." Dinah shook her head. "Which is another reason I'm glad he's coming back. The Reserves and the classes here at least get him some training."

Tahiri glanced toward Arthur and the guys. "Yeah, I know that feeling. If it hadn't been for a lot of things here, I'd have been hopelessly lost half the time in those briefings." She didn't envy Tony, really, being in that position. "And if things happen there while he's here, will they know to get a hold of him?"

"Yup. He's kind of out of the closet now. His boss knows, all his co-workers know, and one of the local police knows. So he's got plenty of non-magic back-up, and they know where he is." Dinah sighed. "I wish I believed it'd be easier after he graduates, but. He dealt with some similar stuff last year, too. The ex said he doesn't run into it that often, but he's not a wizard, so."

She grinned. "Yeah, the Reserves really were a good idea, weren't they? Just keeping in practice working with other people is great. It's kind of too bad the last invasion was all psychic."

Tahiri grimaced. "Yeah. I'm glad that one skipped me -- you didn't run into the me there, did you?" Force, she really hoped not.

Mentally, she backtracked a bit and asked, "Closet?"
