deck | early evening | saturday | september 12

In the Community, going out after certain hours hadn't been permitted save for the those with Assignments that required it. Even being three years removed from that place, it still took Jonas a few weeks to realize that he could go out and stay out without the fear of punishment.

There were so many things he knew he could be doing or could be learning but, tonight, he found himself just staring up at the darkening sky. It was overcast but the clouds still captivated him in ways that might seem mundane to almost everyone else. It was amazing to him how they moved, changed shape and combined with each other so effortlessly.

Jonas hoped he might see stars later, when the sky grew dark, but watching the clouds was all right with him for the moment. The book he'd brought lay unopened next to him, ready if the clouds grew boring. Jonas didn't see that happening though.

[the deck's open!]

She smiled. "Does it help if I say I've never been on a ship either?" she asked. "I've just seen plenty. Most children in the Lower City have, the docks are interesting to hang around."

She hesitated then had to ask. "What's a bicycle and an airplane?"

Beka blinked, trying to imagine both items. The airplane was just going to win in oddity however. "You flew?"

What's it like?" she asked curiously. She hadn't fed pigeons every day without wondering what it'd be like to fly.

"But you didn't," she summarized, since otherwise he'd have told her exactly how it felt a moment ago. "I'm curious now."

That was a bit disappointing as somehow she'd more been imagining a ship. "I'd ask how they get a room in the air, but it really is better not to wonder."

She shook her head. "I'd not know what the terms are either," she assured him. "I think it's safest just to assume it works."

She grinned. "Or never, I'm not hopeful to ever getting the hang of that."

Beka chuckled. "You're enjoying your classes?"

She frowned. "Did I ask you which ones you were following already? I can't remember." So much for her memory exercises.

She chuckled, remembering their previous conversation. "Then I don't need to explain you about Gods anymore."

[identity profile] provostsdog.livejournal.com 2009-09-13 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
"Tis best not trying to understand Gods," she agreed. "You don't want to draw their attention."

"Probably wisest," she grinned at him.
