Sixth Floor; Late Tuesday Afternoon and On! [ 09/24 ] -- Ino's Birthday Party!

There was hopefully no way that Ino could begrudge Cal having her party a day late, especially since it was a far cry from being a day short. The food he had planned caused him to get some use out of that sixth floor kitchen and space, and he'd been to the task ever since he finished with Oceanography class in hopes to get it finished before everyone started showing up. If they did. He'd ~~handwavily because the mun sucks~~ passed out the invitations through everyone's door, but who only knew with the drama of yesterday.

If no one showed up, he'd have to deal with a pouting Ino. But, on the bright side, he'd have all this delicious Greek food for leftovers basically until eternity, because there was a lot of it.

He'd even decorated a little, subtly, with some occasional touch of purple. And a "HAPPY BIRTHDAY INO!" banner in case anyone couldn't figure out what it was all about. Throw on some music, and there it was. There was nothing to the party part. It was mostly about the food, anyway.

Oh, and Ino. Her, too.

"No one would dare try it," she assured Dinah. "People know I bite back with provoked."

Dinah smirked, believing it. "Cool. Anyway, congrats, another year at this place survived, and good luck in the coming year, and... oh yeah, yay for Cal doing this." At which point she had to nom one of the cupcakes. Baklavaaaaaa.

"I'm planning on stealing all the cupcakes," she noted, "so you'd best eat your fill before I put my devious plan into action."

There was no devious plan.

"And Cal, did you know, totally called me at, like two in the morning the day of my birthday? And said he was pushing it back a day. Boys are funny that way, yeah? A girl wouldn't have forgotten to mention something like that!"

Duly warned, Dinah grabbed another one, because devious ninja plans were not to be risked, even if the Birthday Girl had presents, other people to talk to, and other food to get through first.

"So, wait, this isn't your actual birthday?" Dinah paused, then snapped her fingers. "The twenty-third! Yesterday. Same day of the month as mine, yeah, we talked about that, at Turtle's party ages ago. So he just didn't have all the food ready yet?"

"That," she said, nabbing a cupcake of her own. "And the fact that we both had work on my birthday, so he wanted more time to prepare."

A pause.

"Which worked out well, really, 'cause it would've been weird at my own party and not recognizing half the guys."

Dinah tried not to snort cupcake out her nose at that, and had to grab a napkin to dab at her mouth. "Good point on the working. And yeah, that would've been-- well, it was weird. Interesting! But definitely distracting. The party wouldn't have been at all the same."

"Though the pictures would've been pretty epic for a game of 'guess who is who' a few months down the road," she said, snickering. "All the same though, I think it was a good call. I spent most of yesterday sulking at the island's 'present' of turning me into a guy."

"I would've been more peeved if it was my birthday too, yeah." Dinah shook her head. "I mostly spent the day trying to stay in a good mood about it-- I was really tall! But that was just to cover the heebie-jeebies. So glad it didn't last."

"It was my third time being a guy," she confided, making a face. "I'm, like, super pretty as a guy, but not very much else is different. It's sort of weird that way--I always figured I'd look more like my dad if I were a boy, but noooo."

"So it gets easier?" Dinah considered that, still nibbling. "That's good." She didn't know her dad; hadn't thought of that at the time. Darnit. Maybe she could've taken a picture of herself, aged it, seen what he might've looked like.... Well, maybe someone got a picture of her. "I had the flower shop yesterday, I didn't have the option to freak out, so... yeah. And it was still easier than being a cat."

That definitely got a laugh.

"I've never been an animal," she admitted. "I don't know how I'd react, especially with my name, that could be awful."

"Ino?" Dinah said, curious. "Why, what does that mean?" She smiled and shook her head. "I would've been okay if I'd stayed in the store, but I got loose in the park and went exploring for most of an evening. Right after the syrup rain. Got completely mucked up, and had a handful of people chasing me 'cause they were worried. It seemed really funny at the time, but..."

Ino just had to laugh at the image that gave her.

"Sorry!" she bubbled. "But seriously! That's--oh poor them!" Give her a moment to catch her control back. "And, um," Ino wrinkled her nose. "Boar."

"I really should get them thank-you gifts. Or coffee," Dinah said, a little guilty, but laughing. "And-- seriously?" She blinked at Ino, mouth almost falling open, then said, "Um. Is that traditional in your family, or...? 'Cause it's pretty, but I'd think you'd get teased."

"Chocolate and coffee," she decided, and flushed slightly. "Yeah--it's traditional. Dad's Inoichi, and Grandda was Inoshi," the difference was subtle but there, "and no, no one teased me."

Her grin was a bit wry. "Really, people can't tease each other when we've almost all got names like that--Shika means 'deer' and Chou means 'butterfly' and they're both guys. Sakura is 'cherry blossom', Hinata is 'sunny place', Neji is 'screw'..."

"Good plan," Dinah decided, even if it was a couple weeks late. Still, she'd like to see Leto's step-mom again, and Gabrielle was always fun on caffiene; and Lion-O deserved something for never saying anything about her being nude.

"Ohhh. Heh. Some of those are really pretty, but yeah, butterfly for a guy?" She blinked, then laughed at Neji. "Ahem. Okaaaay." She shook her head. "Dinah means 'avenged.' Or vindicated. Or judgment. Or light, or goddess. Depends on where you look it up."

"Why so many different meanings for your name?" she asked, tilting her head. "And a lot of them are traditional for their families--Neji's a bit, odd, 'cause it relates to a technique, but a lot of people in his family tend towards names with 'light' in them. He's Hinata's cousin."

"Hunh. Oh hey, what does Hinata mean?" Dinah asked, curious again. "And Dinah's an really old name, and they're not totally sure where it's from. In Hebrew it means 'vindicated' or maybe avenged, from a story about a girl with that name, and in Latin it maybe means 'light.' My mom probably picked it because she thought it sounded pretty with Lance, anyway."

"Hey, sounding nice is as good a reason as any, really. And it's--Sunny place," she said, smiling. "Which suits her, don't you think?"

"It does!" Dinah grinned. "I like that. But yeah,I can't see you turning into a boar. It just does not compute. At all."

Ino looked very rueful.

"Think: personality," she said dryly. "Believe me, I can see the island being mean."
