Dorm roof, late afternoon

After class, Andy grabbed some essentials and headed up to the roof for a good long think. It wasn't brooding, not really, even if that's entirely what it looked like.

And Andy was hoping that a joint or two would, if not make him forget his troubles, at least make them seem less important for a while. He was fully prepared to remain stoned for as long as it took for that to happen.

After cheerleading practice, Sam was feeling pretty good, and decided to go up to the roof to send Peter some potentially dirty text messages. Sure, he could have done it from his room, but the reception was better up here, and Scout wouldn't be staring at him like he could tell what Sam was doing. That was always a little weird.

When Sam got to the roof and spotted Andy though, he slipped his phone into his pocket and went over to see what he was doing. "Hey," he said, smirking when he realized what Andy was up to. "You're going to have an interesting effect on the garden, I think."

Andy smirked a little. "Like I'm the only one who smokes up here."

"Yeah, but you don't have plain cigarettes," Sam said. He was running the risk of a contact high, but it was worth it to talk to Andy. "You're getting high in the middle of the week?"

"All my classes are done for the week," Andy said.

"Wow, you managed a good schedule," Sam said. "You're celebrating your freedom until next week then?"

Andy just kind of shrugged. "Something like that."

"Is everything okay?" Sam asked. He hadn't gotten to know Andy that well yet, but over the last few weeks he'd gotten used to Andy's usual level of enthusiasm, and this wasn't it.

Another shrug. "Nothing's wrong that wasn't wrong before. I just didn't know it, y'know?"

"...no, actually, I don't know," Sam said, with a little more concern. "Something was wrong before?"

"Something's been wrong my whole life," Andy said with a laugh that had no humor in it at all.

That didn't sound good at all, and Sam gave Andy a sympathetic look. "What something?" he asked. "I mean, you don't have to tell me if you don't want to, but I'm good at listening."

Andy took a deep inhale off his joint before answering. "Found out I'm the reason my mom got killed."

Sam was sympathetic to a lot of problems, but that was a statement that turned his puppy-eyed look up to eleven. "Are you sure about that, or is that just how it feels?" Both things were totally valid as far as he was concerned.

"Guess that depends on how accurate you think the angel down in the church in town is," Andy said.

"You mean Castiel?" Sam asked. "He's very accurate, as far as I know. I mean, he really is an angel and everything."

"Then yeah, pretty sure."

"What did he say about your mother?" He didn't want to have to talk to Castiel about not freaking people out, but he would if it came to it. Or maybe he'd have Chuck do it.

"This is going to sound pretty whacked," Andy warned.

Sam couldn't help but snicker. "I've heard more than my fair share of whacked things before, trust me."

"My Mom died in a fire when I was a baby. Castiel told me the fire was caused by a demon there to feed me its blood."

Of all the potentially whacked things Sam had been expecting to hear, none of them came close to what Andy had actually said. Sam wasn't even sure where to start at first, but he finally managed, "Your mother died in a fire?"

Andy nodded. "I mean, I always had a kinda vague guilt over it, since the fire started in my nursery, but what Castiel said, it really is all my fault."

Sam was pretty sure that somewhere along the line, he'd started staring, but he couldn't help it. "Andy, how old were you when that happened?" he asked.

"Six months," Andy said. "Which I know what you're going to say, how could I possibly be responsible for anything at that age? But if they hadn't adopted me, my mom would still be alive."

"Oh my God," Sam said, as things started clicking into place. Six months old, a fire in his nursery that killed his mother, getting visited by a demon... "Oh my God, there really are more of us."
