2nd Floor Common Room - Thursday Evening

George didn't usually pay a lot of attention to the flickering box in all the Common Rooms, but when he wandered in to find some food this evening, the box caught his attention.

It seemed to be some kind of sports match?  With the little men on ice hitting each other and whacking at a little black puck.

Huh.  He sat down on the couch, curious at the little men.  Oh yeah, totally cheering for the guys in red. They just looked so much cooler.

George nodded, not asking. "Need t'be runnin' around smashin' th' hell out of people like they're doin' in th' game."

"The smashing the hell out of people is the easy part," Alex remarked. "And it doesn't require me getting in a fucking pair of skates."

He couldn't help grinning. "Or th' ice. That could be harder."

"Been on the ice before," Alex said, shrugging. "Winters in Iowa are fucking cold. My friends and I used to race across them."

"Th' river at home freezes in th' winter too," George agreed. "But th' rich people have skates made of bone not th' metal like here. But I meant, there wasn't much ice around now here."

"...bone?" Alex repeated, looking sideways at George.

He shrugged, holding his hands up like 'what do I know?' "I only saw 'em up close once."

"They human bones?" Alex wondered, not sure if he wanted to know the answer.

George stared at Alex. "...probably cow? Tha'd be a bit creepy, aye?"

"I'd say a lot creepy," Alex said, shuddering a bit. "You should get you a pair of skates, go skating."

"I'm thinkin' th' cow bones would be stronger too. Will it get cold enough here t'do that?" he asked curiously.

"Not sure, never been here for a winter," Alex admitted with a shrug. "How cold are you used to?"

"It does get cold in Corus," George said, shrugging as well. "I dunno how to compare it, aye? Th' river freezes an' the Lower City's mud gets all icy. Th' temples are busy from all th sick."

Yeah, Alex had no idea to compare that. "If it's so fucking cold that it hurts your skin, that's about how Iowa can be. Here, might be a little warmer."

"D'you not have warmer clothes in th' winter?" George asked.

It was a valid question from the kid from the slums.

"Yeah, but you wear a mask over your face during winter?" Alex wondered. "And really, some days, clothes don't do jack shit. It's that cold."

"I don' think it gets tha' cold in Corus," George said. "Everyone wears a mask?"

He might have been picturing some sort of Friday the 13th situation.

"Yeah, everyone wears a mask," he said, lying because he could. "They've probably just started putting them out for sale, in fact. It's about time for winter sales."

Or Halloween sales.

George couldn't help a tiny grin at the lie. It wasn't a bad one, but extra things like Sight helped with that.

"Oh, aye? An' they wear 'em all winter? Inside an' out?"

"We've got indoor heating," Alex remarked, shaking his head. "So, no, just outside. Helps keep your nose from forming icicles. I've got one in my room."

"An icicle?" he asked innocently.

"It's happened," he said and that actually wasn't a lie. "You get any kind of liquid out in the super cold, it's gonna freeze."

George rolled his eyes a little. "Aye, I do know that. Jus' didn' know it happened in this world wit' all the extra heatin' and th' lights."

"Not everyone can afford it," he said, shrugging. "Just because we have it, doesn't mean it's readily available."

He nodded, eyeing Alex assessingly for a moment. "Masks then."
