Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

Zack was a little more laid-back then usual today when he stepped up to address the members of the reserves. His arms were clasped behind his back, and he was all but standing at attention when he spoke.

"Today, we're going to discuss something a little more specific than usual," he stated, looking around at the group. "Search and rescue missions, in case somebody goes missing during a raid or invasion. I know, we can't get too greatly into detail, considering it's difficult to tell these things if you don't know the nature of your enemy, but I'd like to get into some generalizations, if we can. Basic stuff, like staying in groups, using our phones to keep in contact with a main party, maybe the support reserves, at specific times in case we go missing too. If there are people with better noses or tracking abilities, that's awesome. If anyone knows of anyone from the magic reserve with a sixth sense for finding people, that's great, too."

"It is also useful to review our maps once more," Arthur cut in. "I would suggest that you split off and scout out specific sections of the island in groups of two or three, so that when we have the need of a specific knowledge of a particular area, we'll have someone aware of the details. Which is not to say," he said, after a pause, "That we don't want all of you knowing the island's specifics to the best of your ability. Should a search and rescue mission be needed, we must waste the least amount of time on figuring out where on God's green Earth we are."

Beat.

"If any of you would like to volunteer to scout out the closest few acres of mainland, we could possibly use that knowledge to our advantage as well."

Zack nodded, and then swayed almost uncomfortably on his heels before he added, "and when we're done discussing that, I've noticed that a few of you have been kinda making faces and grumbling at the activities and discussions that we do here at the Tuesday reserves. If you guys have anything that you would like to see us doing more or less of, please, let us know, and we'll try to work it in. Leto, Arthur, and I all have very different experiences, so we understand that you guys probably do, too."

"Keep in mind that our suggestions may not always seem to make sense to you, but we do know what we're doing," Arthur added, "And for the purposes of this reserve, we'd like to assume you do as well in your own way."

That was... encouraging, Arthur.

Zack might be in a bit of a funk, but that totally didn't stop him from smuggling in cookies and juice.

It would take a lot to stop him from smuggling in cookies and juice.

Illyria was there, no more mingly than ever, but at least she'd got the arrival part down, after a week with no schedule and nothing to do but roam the island to her heart's content. As it were. It was doubtful that she had a heart, and she hadn't been content in millennia.

She should not have been vaguely bothered by thoughts of this weekend's upcoming 'social event' engendered by this morning's class, but... it was Aeryn Sun. She could make even Illyria nervous.

The closest thing Tahiri had ever done to a search-and-rescue mission had been the mission to Coruscant that had ended up being . . . an insane and heroic possible suicide mission. Still, thanks to both Jedi training and a lot of chatter on the subject from a certain incredibly talkative and smartalecky squadron of commando pilots, she had a pretty good grasp on the basic principles here.

She also had cookies. They didn't quite make up for the lack of actual restful sleep, but they were cookies. Cookies always helped.

Cookies and juice were good, as far as Firekeeper was concerned. Blind Seer passed, as usual. But both were here! And entirely willing to be mingly.

Karla had missed the last several Reserve meetings so she made extra-certain to be here today. And was glad, not only for the cookies and juice, but because it was a topic she could actually contribute to!

Leto hadn't had the opportunity to talk to Karla since he had met her with her family. He approached her, smiling. "So, you survived both your family and the break?"

Yay for the cookies! As usual, Tuesday was Dinah's most sugared-up day, since all her classes, rehearsal *and* reserves included sugar. She might have to go running around the island again after this.

The juice and cookies went a long way toward helping Griff mentally figure out where he stood in a discussion about search and rescue. Sure, he might not be so great at tracking, but he could infiltrate any place he'd been or could see and that had to mean something. Unable to verbalize this, he chose to munch and listen instead.

Have you got any skills that might help in such a situation? Do you know anybody who does? Do they do these things a particular way, where you're from, and you'd like to share?

Plus, more discussing the lay of the land. Some of you probably still have maps of the island and notes on such, right?

"My sense of... you would call it scent, though it is not entirely such - exceeds that of a human," Illyria said, arms crossed and vaguely twitchy. "I track well."

"Jedi," Tahiri said with a slight, self-deprecating smile. "We learn the sense-related abilities pretty early on. If there's a living being around within reasonable distance, we can try to find them through the Force -- I get a stronger lock if it's someone I know. I used to be able to --"

Absolutely no point in dredging that up now. She trailed off, shook her head, and continued, "I'm not good at this at all, and I don't know which of us is or isn't, but there's a psychometry technique that lets you pick up impressions and information from objects. I'm sure some of the magic users know something similar, or maybe better."

"My nose," Firekeeper said. "Is not so great as a proper wolf's, like Blind Seer," she nodded at the wolf by her side, "but better than human. And I know human tracking ways, too."

"Hmmm." Most of Dinah's Search-and-Rescue moments had gotten her grounded, even if they were successful. "Let's see, good places to hold someone who's been kidnapped... There's a couple places in the warehouse district that are more accessible and easy to guard than others. Those abandoned houses around the edges of town." She paused, thinking. "Holding someone in the Preserve for any length of time would be trickier if you weren't familiar with the terrain, and harder to be sure no one stumbled across you, I think. The Rocky Bits would probably be the most inaccessible to rescuers who couldn't fly, but that would mean you'd have a hard time getting you and a captive in there too...."
