"Hello, reserves. I see you've all managed to keep it together in my absence," Arthur announced, "Something for which I apologise. This week, we will be returning to an old, tried strategy with the reserves, which is the mapping and exploration of the island. Obviously, we've already made our maps, but some of you have taken only to specific areas, or been so diligent little was left for anyone else," not looking at certain parties, thank you. "Because of this, I think freshing up our knowledge and experience might be a good idea."

Yes, at this point it had to be pointed out that Arthur was well aware of what Zack had made them do last week. There were also no cookies. Just water. An alarming amount of canteens of water, to be exact.

"We are going to hike around the island," he announced, "Get a feel for our coasts, keep an eye open for any oddities, and share the knowledge amongst ourselves. After all, we have to be prepared. Take a canteen - and I will not see any of you pausing to refill it if you wind up being a glutton - find a friend if need be, and get to it."

If anyone had been capable of going to Camelot and asking him, a certain Sir Dinadan might have been able to inform the collective reserves that this was exactly the kind of thing Arthur put people through when he had a hunch they didn't hate him hard enough, and also congratulations, this was going to keep happening if people kept being nice to him.

"And Zack? No cookies. You're with me."

It was possible Sir Dinadan was right.

"Okay, point," Jennifer said. "THat was a little silly. Fun, but hardly prep work for being a defense force. And don't get me wrong, you're a born leader, I can tell. I just think we sometimes get treated more like an army than a group of young people."

"How long have you been here?" he asked, after a moment or so. "There was the-- incident this summer, but I don't think we've had an invasion in some time." Don't jinx them all, Arthur. Don't.

"Since the start of the summer," Jennifer said. "I was around for the alligators. But I wasn't exactly a fighter then."

"Well, trust me, sometimes we can use the discipline," he said, lightly, idly pulling on his gloves.

Or, y'know, Arthur's idea of 'a group of young people' was a lot more military than most people's, thank you, dad.

"Right," Jennifer said. "...when are you from, again?"

"The 'dark ages'," he said, verbal fingerquotes firmly in hand.

"You can say that again," Jennifer said, amused. "Well, captain my captain, thanks for listening to my concerns."

"I think you'd have to go to Nathan Algren for a captain," Arthur said, thoroughly missing the reference. But he finished that up with a polite, "Jennifer," and hey, look, he did remember people's names. Sometimes.
