Second Floor Common Room, Monday Evening

Tony had a can of pop, a bag of beef jerky and a can of spray cheese. He settled in the second floor common room to watch this week's episode of Darkest Night. Tonight Raymond Dark and James Taylor Grant investigated crop circles. Aliens? Fakes? Or... something else?

"I think she was," Jack said. "I don't think she realized how it sounded. Hayley? I think she just says whatever she thinks."

"Short blonde hair, big eyes?" Francine asked. "She's in Lit and Ethics with me."

"That's the one. She makes an impression."

"She's not shy," observed Francine, who kind of was, at least with new people; she was just the type who hid it behind a friendly grin and a mouth that ran too fast.

Jack, who had never in his life been accused of shyness, shook his head. "Just insecure, I think. And trying to flirt."

... to be fair, he hadn't precisely discouraged that.

Oh sure, make her think about that now. "Oh! I'm not! I mean. When I give people cookies. I'm not." Except when she had been, shush. "...I'd kind of have to be flirting with everyone on the island, if I was."

"Is there something wrong with flirting with everyone on the island?" Jack asked, managing to make the question exaggerated flirtation.

"What? I mean no. I mean..." Sigh. Francine blushed and then wonder of wonders, picked up that she was being teased. "Not if you're you. Merlin would've had some problems with me doing it, though, and--" And now there was somebody else who'd be equally unthrilled. Or always would have been, really. "--And I'm just not the flirting with everyone on the island type."

"That right there is why I won't have a Merlin," Jack said lightly. "Well. Not him specifically -- not that I have anything against him. But monogamy just interferes with things."

Also, the only person he would be monogamous for, couldn't, which was a problem Jack tended not to dwell on.

"Not everyone can be the type, though."

Not even Francine Peters, Queen of Accidental Blurt (look, Guinevere wasn't around to argue for the title and anyway there's a whole reincarnation thing that looks awwwwfully suspicious) was going to say The other way didn't work for us.

She might actually say I don't know, it runs in my family. Maybe just in the men, though... if she was feeling especially bitter, but she wasn't.

"I don't think I'd be very good at it, no," she went with instead.
