It wasn't even Thanksgiving yet, but Didi was firmly of the opinion that it was never too early for Christmas cookies. She flopped down with a bin of frosted sugar cookies shaped like bells and wreaths and an old Katharine Hepburn movie.

She'd probably share the cookies.

"It is great," Didi agreed earnestly.

"... so how have you been, Hayley?"

"Oh, pretty good," Hayley said. "I have a fake baby which is nice, the magic dog is taking great care of her. And I got my butt kicked at Fight Club, but it wasn't too bad."

"...you have a dog babysitting?" Didi asked. "What, does it talk?"

She wouldn't be surprised.

"Oh, well, not that I've heard," Hayley said. "But Liir told me it was a great babysitter. And he wouldn't lie to me, I don't think."

She nodded. "He's from a magic place, you know."

"I didn't. I haven't met him," Didi said. "But if you're both cool with the dog babysitting..."

Yeah, Didi had her doubts.

"Oh, well, it's not like Mel's a real baby. But I trust Liir. I mean, I think I do. Do you think I shouldn't?"

She began to fret a little. "I don't want to disappoint Master Skywalker."

"I don't know, Hayley," Didi said. "It's your fake baby. if you trust Liir, and Liir trusts the dog, there you go."

"Yeah," Hayley said, thinking hard for a second. "I should check for chew marks, next time I take her."

"You think you might get in trouble if the baby got chewed on?"

"Maybe," Hayley said. "But maybe I can argue that scars build character..."

"You could take out a marker and draw a tattoo over the marks," Didi suggested helpfully. "Tell the professor it was important your child artistically express herself."

Hayley giggled. "That's a great idea, too," she said. "Who doesn't want an expressed baby, right?"

"You know me, I live to serve," Didi said blithely. "I just hope the dog doesn't decide the baby's a bone and bury her."

Hayley just started laughing. "That'd just be silly. Babies aren't bones!"

She suddenly got distracted. "Ooooh, cookies. Can I have one?"

"Go for it," Didi said. "They're just sugar cookies, but they're good. I got them at the bakery in town."

"There's nothing just about sugar cookies," Hayley said, snagging one. "Besides, its free. Free cookies taste better. Didn't you know that?"

"Free everything tastes better," Didi countered.

"That's a good point," Hayley said. "Though dirt tastes awful, and that's free."

She giggled at her own joke.

Didi laughed a little too. "I can't say I've eaten a whole lot of dirt lately."

"Oh, me neither," Hayley said. "Not like I grew up with a yard to play in, either. But when I was real little and in the park, well..."

She shrugged and grinned. "Kids will be kids, right?"
