Roof; Friday Afternoon

Chuck was bored and tired of hanging around his room so when he finally got out of bed on Friday he decided to get out for a bit. Not to a common room since his post-Thanksgiving hangover wasn't allowing for him to be quite that social at the moment, but he knew he could handle being out on the roof for a bit. It was cold, but nothing Chuck couldn't handle. The scarf did more than make him look fantastic, you know.

"Hey, I didn't make the calendar," he said, shrugging. "Not my fault the pilgrims did their thing so close to Jesus doing...whatever he did."

He wasn't religious, he had no idea.

"Means more time out of school and doing nothing," he added. "Why would I complain?"

"Didn't suggest you would," Effy said, little smile twitching at her lips. "Enjoy your holiday, then?"

"Better than most Thanksgivings I've had," he said vaguely, shrugging. "There was actually food this time. Not something I was all that accustomed to. Couldn't pass that up. I had some food and then drank a little and that was that."

"Bet you did your good American duty and told everyone you were thankful for them." Somehow, she didn't think so, but like that would stop her from teasing. "Can just see it."

"Maybe. In my own way. I am a giving person, after all," he said, matching her teasing with some more vagueness. He shrugged and reached into his pocket to pull out his cigarettes. "Isn't that the point of the holiday? I wouldn't be a good American if I didn't tell people I was thankful."

"Don't really know much about being a good American." For obvious reasons. "I'll have to take your word for that. Trust in your superior knowledge and all."

"It is pretty superior," Alex said, preening some. "It's just good to hear someone as reluctant as yourself finally coming round to admitting that. I knew it was just a matter of time and all. Everyone comes around."

Effy rolled her eyes. "Only in this," she clarified. "Don't get too fucking smug."

"Why not?" he wondered, shrugging. "Think I've got all kinds of reasons to be smug. Show me an opposing argument and maybe I'll think about it."

Or not.

"You have something specific to be smug about today?" She didn't have a decent argument formulated yet. Might get to that in a minute.

"Plenty," he said and shrugged. "Do I never not have stuff to be smug about? Are you asking me to share?"

"Seemed so sure you had such a list."

Yes, yes she was asking him to elaborate. So she knew what a few of them would be, but was curious how they'd line up.

"All right," he said, shrugging and leaning back against the edge of the roof. If she was going to lay down that little challenge, he could rise up even if he knew things could end up going to shit here. Couldn't resist. "Free food yesterday meant I didn't have to cook a damn thing. Spent last night getting nicely drunk. Took a nice break with one of the cooks of the Thanksgiving meal. And got promised some ice cream with the same person. I'm not one of those saps with the robot kids. I look good. And I bought cigarettes today."

He thought his list was pretty nice, if he could say so. "That what you were hoping for?"

What she expected from him, and what she wanted to hear were two completely different things. That list, a lot of it, came under 'expected'.

"I keep myself busy," he said, shrugging casually. "And you wanted me to share. You expecting to hear something else?"

"Missing something about the fun you got out of going through that stamp collection of yours." Beginning to remember why asking him about how he spent his time was never a good idea.

"Well, that goes without saying," he said, shrugging. "So, that mean you have no opposing argument? Giving that up?"

"Arguing with you is a lot of fucking effort for a holiday." So no, she didn't really feel like following up. It generally led nowhere positive with them.

"Aww, you've been in an effort me before," he teased, laughing. "I'm not worth it anymore?"

"Maybe you'll inspire me in a minute," she suggested. "New goal for you." Just in case he was bored of any of the ones he had already.

"Why am I going to put in an effort for you if you're not going to do it for me?" Alex wondered, raising an eyebrow. "Seems a little tilted even if you try to tilt it that way most of the time."

"At this point," she reminded him. "You owe me." Which technically meant it was tilted firmly in her favour. In her opinion, at least.

"How the hell do I owe you?" he asked, frowning in confusion. "What am I missing here?"

"Dressed up for you," she said, moving a little closer. "Brought you sparklers and toffee apples. Nice enough to share my bed." Sounded like effort she'd put in for him before.

Alex wasn't really able to deny those things and, when faced with them now, he could see she had put in a lot of effort for him. He paused, watching her move closer and tried to think of what kind effort he could put in. Alex dug into his pocket and pulled out a pen and some an old cigarette receipt but didn't write anything just yet.

"That does sound like an effort," he agreed, smiling a little. "You know, you were one of like five people on my grilled cheese list."

And she'd probably been the most important but he stopped short of saying that. "Think maybe you'd want to come downstairs sometime this week for something like that? I can't promise the dressing up but I'll kick Griff out, cook some and you can even share my bed. And, you know, I can plan to see you and all since we usually don't."
