Fourth floor common room [Monday evening]

Triela was sitting with a cup of tea resting in front of her. Which wasn't unusual at all. What was unusual was that she was staring somewhat pensively off into nowhere. She was distracted enough that she hadn't really noticed that her tea had gone cold.

And, somehow, she was distracted enough not to really notice that the TV was on and playing one of those truly awful science fiction movies about one improbably giant animal fighting some other improbably giant animal. If she'd been paying any attention at all, Triela probably would have turned the thing off in disgust when it became clear that this particular film involved a giant killer sea turtle and some sort of mutated jellyfish.

There was no way she'd object to someone changing the channel, and it was entirely questionab le as to whether she'd even notice, but if someone were in the mood for some lukewarm tea, well... she had a pot of it.

Momoko's eyes were like saucers and she bounced in her seat as she leaned closer. "Whoa! I haven't seen that one! What was it called? Okay, was it in colour or black and white, cause that can make a movie totally different. And was the octopus god really evil or protecting his people? If the robot was an alien, it was totally the evil one!"

Oh my God Momoko was so cute! "I think it was called Dagon Vs. Robothulu. And it kind of went from black and white to color and back again. But might have just been Bordertown playing with the film."

Wow! Both colour and black and white?

"It does? That's a super cool concept! I am so totally going to have to find that movie! Think it's on the internet?" Momoko filed the name of the movie and totally planned a night scouring the web and emailing a few people if necessary. She didn't even mind if the alien was the good guy, it just sounded totally awesome! "So was Bordertown the name of the production company? I haven't heard of it before."

Leda giggled. "No Bordertown's where I'm from. Magic and Technology kind of wash up against each other and make them both unpredictable. So I'm not sure if the movie was supposed to be black and white, or color."

"That is so cool!" Another person from a world with magic! Momoko was starting to feel left out. "Wait, 'magic and technology'? Can't they exist at the same time where you're from?"

No one else had mentioned that part. Momoko didn't like the idea of giving up mecha for magic.

"Well they do, but they kinda mix weird. They're kind of like two opposing forces."

Again with the big eyes, because the whole point of magic was to make life easier and life was full of technology. "That would be so totally weird to live with! So, like, your phone stops working if you get near someone who can do magic or something? What about the cars and trains and stuff? And street lights?"

[identity profile] anarchist-queen.livejournal.com 2009-12-03 02:15 am (UTC)(link)
"Well there aren't any phones, the few cars there are you kind of take your chances about whether they'll work. The most expensive ones have a gas engine, and a spell box for the pockets where one or the other won't work. There's only one train and it's a steam engine, and street lights are kind of a combination of gas lighting and faery lights."

The tv was kind of forgotten as Momoko listened, enraptured. "That sounds awesome! Magic everywhere and all mixed up with everything... Like a fairy tale or something!" She nodded. Definitely like some of the stories she'd made up as a kid. "Well, lacking a few giant robots, but no world is perfect. But I'm not sure I could live without my phone. Or the tv and internet. Coming to school here must be weird for you!"

"Well, I am an Elf from Faery." Leda grinned. "Bordertown's on the edge of The human world and Faery. And yeah, coming here was really weird. I still haven't gotten the hang of computers."
