3rd Floor Common Room [Sunday Evening]

Yesterday a promise was made to bake cookies.

Which was why Claire had gone shopping and was currently in the common room, mixing up the dough to bake some double chocolate chip cookies. She left a voicemail for Jool and figured that other people would probably wander by when they smelled something baking.

"Cookies," Claire said, turning to look at the newcomer. Based on the clothing and accent, she suspected the girl was not from a modern time or place. "Would you like to try one?"

"Oh yes, please. I don't think I have had one before." Of course, ovens did not exist where she was from. "You can probably guess I am not from around here."

"I kinda thought so," Claire admitted with a smile, handing her one of the cookies. "I'm Claire Bennet. I live in room 312."

"I'm Mulan. I'm in 318, so not too far from you," she replied, taking the cookie from Claire. After taking a bite, she grinned. "That's very good!"

"I'm glad you like it," Claire said. "You're welcome to have a few more. Just, uh, they aren't exactly the healthiest food in the world, so you probably don't want to eat too many."

"I will keep that in mind," Mulan replied. "There are a lot of foods here I am not used to, so I want to try everything I can at some point."

Claire nodded. "Hanging out in common rooms is a good way to do that. There are often people cooking or ordering in."

"That is a very good to know," Mulan said with a smile. "Where are you from, Claire?"

"I grew up in Texas," Claire said. "Which you probably never heard of. It's about a thousand miles from here."

Yes, Claire, the girl from ancient China will understand that.

"Even further from where I am from," Mulan added. "I have been able to determine based on a calendar I found in my room that this is a different time. 2010. Year of the Tiger."

It was amazing how calm she was about the whole thing.

"Do you know what year it is back home?" Claire asked.

"It is still the fourth century back home," Mulan replied. "I was told this place was strange. That's kind of an understatement."

"Wow. You seem to be handling it okay though," Claire said. She was kind of impressed, really.

"My father told me this is a place where I can by myself," Mulan explained. "I trust his judgment. Though I won't lie. This place is very confusing."

"I can't even begin to imagine," Claire admitted. "Feel free to stop by anytime if you have questions."

"I may do that at some point," Mulan replied. "I think I will probably have questions for everyone."

Claire nodded. "Don't be afraid to ask them. People here know what's it like to be new and not understand things."

"People here are helpful and they cook often," Mulan grinned. "I think I could get used to this place."

"Did your big sibling explain to you about any of the weird stuff that happens here sometimes?" Claire asked.

"She told me to watch out for gremlins and that people turn into animals sometimes?" Mulan was still having trouble believing that one.

"Definitely good advice," Claire agreed. "My boyfriend turned into a dog last summer."

Mulan blinked. "Well, if I ever turn into an animal, I hope it's a dragon."

What? She thought that would be cool.
