Fifth Floor Common Room, Saturday Morning

There were smells and sounds coming from the fifth floor common room that would probably tempt most passers-by.
The sizzle and crackle of bacon and eggs, the bready smell of toasted English muffins, and... okay, it'd be really hard to smell or hear the orange juice just passing by.

Jennifer Walters was feeling good that morning. And she just wanted to share that feeling with others. Making breakfast seemed like a good way to do that.

And if the sounds of breakfast didn't bring people in, the fact she was playing Lady Gaga over a radio might help, she thought.

He had a mouth full of bacon and eggs so it took a moment before he could respond. "Thanks to? You don't mind?"

"If I wanted to, I could pick up the couch you're on right now, and you wouldn't have to get up," she said. "I'm super strong, hard to hurt, taller, and my hair gets really nice. It's hardly some terrible affliction."

Strong. Check. (Not that he'd tried to lift up a couch before.)
Hard to hurt. Sort of check.
Tall. Check.
Hair... Okay, he'd had to cut it off, which Bella had been disappointed about.

He glanced over at her and shrugged a shoulder. Maybe it helped if you didn't have the monster part in your list. "Sounds like a good deal then. Whoever knew gamma radiation could be good for you."

"Well, good for some people," Jennifer said. "My cousin has more problems than me." She took a bite of her eggs and chewed, thoughtfully.

"What kind of trouble?" he asked. His plate was going to be empty soon if he didn't pace himself.

"Bruce loses his mind," Jennifer said. "He gets really big, really strong, but he's... sort of just a giant green ball of anger. Which is weird, because he's normally so intelligent and quiet.

Giant green ball of anger? Jacob stopped eating for a moment to consider it.

"You don't get that?" he asked.

"I don't, not really," Jennifer said. "I used to only change into this when I got angry. But now, well, now I'm just sort of... Jennifer Walters, second edition. Brand new package, same person on the inside."

That got his attention and he was staring at her, more than he should if he was going to not have to come up with some lame excuse. "How did you beat that?"

No reason.

"This part is going to sound really crazy," Jennifer said, nibbling on a strip of bacon. "I came down with a terrible blood disease, thanks to the gamma radiation. But a scientist was able to cure it, thanks to his specialty in blood. He sort of... had accidentally turned himself into a vampire at one point. And by curing the disease, it gave me control over my changes."

"How do you accidentally turn yourself into a leech?" Jacob demanded, his food forgotten now. "And you let him touch you?"

"I didn't ask," Jennifer said. "And he was the only one who could save me from dying."

Right. He took another bite from his food. He didn't know if he'd ever want to depend on one of those frigging suckers to save his life.

"How different is your world from this one?" he asked.

"A little," Jennifer said. "More... marvelous things. Not, like, unicorns and stuff. As far as I know. But heroes and villains with amazing and uncanny powers. That sort of thing."

"And gamma radiation," he nodded and he rose from the couch to get himself a muffin. "Sounds different. You're the first superhero I've met here."

"I wouldn't say that," Jennifer said, a little quickly. "Superwannabe, at this point. I haven't actually done any heroic acts or even pulled a kitten from a tree."

"So you haven't run into a super villain yet then?" he asked. He had a muffin and a glass of orange juice now.

"Not yet," Jennifer said. "I'm hoping to hold off on that until I actually know how to fight."

Sometimes having instincts worked out. "Apparently there's plenty of people around here who do."

"Yeah," Jennifer said. "Right now I'm more power and no precision. It can work, but I'm pretty easily beaten by people who know what they're doing."

"Makes sense," he nodded. "I've never had any sort of training myself."

"Would you need any?" Jennifer said. "I mean, you're not planning on being a boxer or anything, are you?"

"Nah," he shook his head. "If you believe the reserves, it just seems handy."

"Well, around here, there's a benefit to it," Jennifer said. "Never know what the island will throw at you next. So, knowing how to defend yourself is good."

"Knowing kung fu or karate would be kind of awesome," he mused. "But then I'd have to stop being lazy."
