Behind the Dorms, Tuesday Afternoon

Today, they were back to sandwiches. Call it a punishment for last week's teddy bears.

Arthur spoke first. "A little less than a year ago, the island was invaded by zombies," he started. "They took our people and turned them into their own. It was a close call. In order to protect the students, we built a barricade around the school by the gates and watched it day and night. Today, we are going to look into how defensible the school really is."

"I wasn't here for the zombies," Zack noted, and the expression on his face probably spoke volumes about how thankful he was to have missed that, "but in a situation like that, my guess is that you'd have to prepare for a heavy ground attack, where the enemy's strength lies more in sheer numbers than in speed or tactics. Not all enemies are going to be like that, and not all enemies are necessarily going to attack from the ground, either. An opponent that can fly, or even one that burrows or teleports from place to place is completely likely, around here."

Zack looked back at Arthur. Letting him choose today's activity meant that maybe next week, he'd be allowed to bring the cookies back. Look, the cookies were important.

"I want you all to pick a partner, or two if you'd prefer. Go down to the gates. One of you will move further back into town, then attempt to enter. The other must fend them off. Use whatever materials are at your disposal, then tell us what you've learned."

"Good," Ben said. "I like your toes."

"I'm kind of partial to them too," Tahiri replied, leaning into him. "You believe me that they're all there inside the shoes, right?"

"I don't know," Ben said. "I might have to check later."

He held on a little tightly, like keeping his arms around her would stop her from disappearing again.

"If you want to, I guess that's okay," Tahiri conceded, holding on just as tightly.

Then, quietly and a little sadly, "I missed you too."

"Well, just try to get me to go away now," Ben replied, leaning in to kiss her. "I'm going to be stuck to you like a mynock."

What a romantic image, Ben.

"Boy, you're a real charmer, Skywalker," Tahiri teased, any further comment temporarily derailed on account of kissing him back.

Well, it wouldn't be a reserves meeting if it didn't end like this, right?

"Missed you."

It was tradition. Yes, already.

"I think we covered that part." But she didn't mind hearing it again.

"You might have forgotten in the last few minutes," he said, nipping at her lower lip. "Want to skip out early? We were here for zombies."

"Ugh. Once was enough. Can we have something not ice cream today?" Tahiri asked, returning the favor. "I could go for hot chocolate."

"Sounds good," Ben said. "I discovered Thai food, too. It's really spicy."

When you leave it up to guys in the restaurant, yeah, it's going to burn.

"Oooh. Anything you think I'd like?" Tahiri asked, disengaging from him just enough to start moving. The less talk of zombies the better. That had not been a fun time for several reasons.

He reached to intertwine his fingers with hers. "I don't know the names of most of what I ordered," he admitted. "I just pointed at the menu. Should have figured that the snickering was a bad sign."

"Dork," Tahiri said fondly. "But not a bad enough sign that you're telling me not to try it, obviously."

"Well, once your sinuses stop screaming for mercy, it's tasty," Ben said.

"Ben?" Tahiri asked after a moment. "Promise me you'll never consider a second career as a salesman."

Ben laughed. "I won't. I'll also pass on writing greeting cards."

"Unless there's a market for really awful ones?"

Well, technically that meant there was, if you wanted to look at it from a certain point of view.

Ben reached over to tug on her hair. "Hey!"

"You brought it up first," Tahiri pointed out innocently. "Not me."

"You're not supposed to agree that I'll suck at something," Ben replied.

Tahiri gave him her best adorable look. (It was a little under par today.) "Jedi, remember? I love you, but I'm only looking out for the good of the galaxy."

Ben squeezed her fingers. "Just for that, you get a smaller hot chocolate," he declared.

"I still get whipped cream, right?" She pretended to look absolutely crestfallen. "I guess I deserve that, don't I?"

"Yes, you can still have whipped cream," Ben said, laughing. "I'm not that cruel."
