Proto was hungry. That meant it was time to raid the common room for food!

At the moment he was sitting on couch surrounded by a couple of dozen boxes of assorted junk food. Twinkies, cereal (with marshmallows), crackers, cookies, more cereal (this time no marshmallows), cupcakes, oatmeal cream pies, and at least three or four things that were simultaneously unidentifiable and obviously past their expiration date.

What? The boy was hungry. And it's not like he knew how to cook.

"It's not like that at home," Jack said. He wasn't arguing; he was just stating a fact.

"Lucky." The comment was off-handed, and Proto accompanied it with a one-shouldered shrug. "Next you're gonna tell me you're not from the middle of a war zone," he tossed in with a teasing sort of smirk.

"Strangely, enough, I'm not," Jack said easily. "You are?"

"Most days." Some days, though, there was a blizzard, and not even the Reds tried fighting in those anymore.
