Fourth Floor Common Room [Wednesday evening]

To say that Aravis was fascinated by the Olympics would be gross understatement. Once she had sat down to watch, she had been unable to tear herself away for very long. The abundance of ice and snow held her interest well enough, and the grace the athletes had demontrated had only compounded this.

Tonight, speed-skating and skiing both had her attention, and while -- being a citizen of a country not only not represented, but not in this world -- she was not hoping for anyone in particular, she was wincing everytime someone fell, and cheering when she was impressed by things. She also had a small bag of chocolates with her on the couch, which she'd possibly share. Especially in exchange for explanation of rules. She still hadn't exactly figured out the scoring system, aside from, "Don't fall down."

"This stuff sure goes on," Hayley remarked, settling into a chair with a puzzled look on her face, fuzzy bunny slippers on her feet, and a bag of Cheeto Puffs in her hand. "What is it tonight, ice dancing?"

"Skating," Aravis said distractedly, sparing the girl a glance before returning her gaze to the television. "I think that's what it's called. They're moving quickly on ice."

"Well, that's probably skating, yeah. But the dumb kind where they have to go as fast as possible. I like it better when they're doing tricks and stuff. I mean, it's nice and all, but it's not like it's a useful sport, right?" Hayley said, between munching Cheetos.

Aravis raised a brow at her. "The dancing bit? No, I don't think it's very useful. It's quite pretty -- though I dislike how...shiny the costumes seem to be -- but this," she nodded towards the television, "seems very useful indeed. Suppose you were fleeing something on ice!"

"What are you gonna find on ice?" Hayley asked, chuckling. "Angry polar bears?"

"Maybe," Aravis said seriously. "Maybe a race of people that inhabits icy lands and has a decided advantage over my own inability to move across ice without slipping."

"Oh thank god," Bobby said, as he made his way into the common room. "A sport that's not curling."

"Curling?" Aravis echoed, now deeply confused. She'd missed it earlier. "Do you mean that...hair? As a sport?"

"No, no," Bobby assured her. "Although, actually, it's about just as dull."

"I can't imagine that any of these games would be dull," she said, looking mildly disappointed. "Even if I don't understand how to score them."

"It's a bunch of guys sliding big rocks down the ice," Bobby... well, explained was probably a very generous term. "And then there's another couple of guys who run around sweeping the ice with brooms. That's not a sport, that's housework."

"Brooms?" Aravis was incredulous. "And rocks? For goodness' sake, who invented this game? And why has it seemingly not evolved to civilized levels?"

"That's the thing with brooms, right?" Hayley asked. "And the rocks?"

"That about sums it up, yeah," Bobby said, making a face. It was clear he didn't think much of it.

"Booooooooring," Hayley agreed, grinning. "It's like shuffleboard. And you know who plays shuffle board? Boring old people."

"You know, I don't think I've ever seen anyone actually play shuffleboard," Bobby mused.

Ben blinked. "Curling?"

"World's most boring winter sport," Bobby confirmed. "Seriously, it involves brooms and expects me to take it seriously? Whatever."

"So curling is what people do at the pain of watching it?" Ben guessed.

"That makes about as much sense as anything," Bobby said thoughtfully. "This is where it's at," he gestured at the screen. "Well, this and hockey."

"You're watching sports?" Ben asked, walking into the common room.

There was an unspoken, teasing "really?" at the end of that sentence.

"Snow," Aravis explained, pointing to the screen. "And look how quickly they move! And excuse you, I happen to enjoy certain sports."

Ben glanced at the skates. "Wait, those don't have engines? Astral."

"Exactly!" Aravis said, grinning. "They move faster than Bree at a sprint, I think."

"Do they have shoes that fit him?" Ben teased.
