Katchoo had felt justified in blowing most of her last paycheck on food for this party, because this was a girl who would eat half-raw macaroni and cheese if left to her own devices and you really didn't want her cooking. It helped to have a radio cohost who ran the diner ~~and could be shamelessly self-modded~~ and had the weirdest mushy soft spot for her and Francine, so she'd been able to call in favors from Lacey, who'd supplied trays of sandwiches, salads, a couple of fancy-looking pasta dishes, and a large chocolate and raspberry mousse cake.

She'd thought setting up for the party would be a lot harder, but . . . eh, this wasn't the kind of party that you had just to see how many high-profile politicians you could get blackmail material on in one night. Simple enough. And as far as Katchoo was concerned, a hell of a lot more important.

The music for the night was a combination of Griffin Silver and the Beatles, there was extra room on the tables for food in case anyone else felt like bringing stuff, Clocky made occasional tweeting circuits of the room, and the ball pit was there for you if you needed it.

And Katchoo was even around, her usual diffident expression dialed down half a notch. The things we do for love, man.

. . . and then a bed of plastic squirt flowers sprang up in one corner of the room near the ballpit. Sigh. Happy frikkin' April Fool's.

Mat was ready to arrive and mingle--not that he'd done much more than flirt casually with Francine in the past--because parties are Not to Be Missed.

And people were always glad to see him, right? Ooh, Kennedy!

Oh, yeah, Kennedy was real thrilled to see him. Okay, okay, she wasn't jumping for joy or anything, but you had to at least acknowledge a guy who'd kicked some wolfy ass with you. (No offense, Firekeeper and Blind Seer.)

"Yo, Mat," she acknowledged, waving the hand that wasn't currently holding a ridiculous amount of grape tomatoes.

"My lady," Mat said with a mocking smile and a little bow. "How are you today?"

"Keep dreaming," Kennedy replied with a smirk, even though she knew it was a figure of speech, thanks. Couldn't let the mockery go unanswered, after all. "Back to not being a hero, I see."

"My favorite occupation," Mat said. "Especially if it comes with cake and pretty girls to talk with."

"Yeah, I think you've got both of those things covered here," Kennedy said, choosing to take that as a personal compliment anyway because she knew she was hot, thank you. "Go crazy with that."

"Can I fetch you a drink?" he asked politely.

"Whoa, not on me," Kennedy immediately protested. Had to give him credit for persistence, though. "But sure, if it'll make your night that much better, I could use a drink."

"With or without alcohol?" he asked with a grin.

"With," Kennedy decided immediately, "but don't think it's gonna earn you any of those kind of points with me."

She tilted her head in Tara's direction. "Not to disappoint, but she's my type, not you."

Which was not to say she wasn't going to enjoy seeing how persistent he could be. Just... without leading him on. Hello, sore spot.

"You have excellent taste," Mat said. "I prefer a girl with curves myself."

"Yeah, she's great," Kennedy said-- and scowled at him. "Hey."

Mat's innocent look wasn't that innocent. "Hmm?"

Hey, that was a lot like her not so innocent innocent look. Trippy.

"Did you just try to imply I'm not all that?" Kennedy demanded, luckily more amused than affronted, if the laughter was any clue.

"Oh, but you aren't interested in what I think of you," Mat teased.

"No, but that doesn't mean you can't appreciate it," Kennedy shot back, grinning.

"Then you should know that I think you have beautiful eyes and a lovely smile," Mat said, winking.

"Score points for you not being blind," Kennedy declared, crossing her arms and laughing. "Nice touch with the compliments there too, by the way."

"They're both true," Mat said, "which helps."

"Damn right they are." See, the polite thing to do here, Kennedy, would be to return the favor. "Glad you see it my way. And now I'm kinda regretting that we can't, like, go hang out and check out girls somewhere."

"We could bring Tara?" Mat suggested.

Don't tempt her, Mat. "That miiiiiiiiight," Kennedy remarked, "be an interesting idea."
